So I have decided to list several faves in each category.. So here’s a list of faves in different types … for experienced collectors this will just seem like babble, but for newbies and inexperienced folks this can be of great help to get started or increase their just started collection, you can’t go wrong with any of these trees. And please use the sap app that goes above and beyond this personal list. The sap app is linked below for easy access.

Just click on the screen shot below play arrow below and let it play . Depending on your computer speed you may want to pause it a bit to load it up .. I have tweaked it to load faster but if you have a very low speed connection rate just pause the video for 10 seconds although you may not need to even with a low connection with my tweaking. Let me know what you think.
I hope you enjoy it and get excited about all the cool rare Japanese Maples and other rare companion trees I carry .]]>
I have come to believe fall planting is fine for Japanese Maples too although I personally prefer spring but that now is just a personal preference… the difference in death rate is miniscule and that is only for very far northern growers on the edge of JM growing areas!!! Most of the damage seems to be bark split from southern exposure to bright winter sun… either placement where that sun does no damage or using plastic tree guards ( be sure to remove early spring!!) can keep that from happening .. Bark split comes from winter sun warming the tree sap rising then freezing and popping the bark at night if enough bark splits it will die in spring…, Over the years I have lost very few fall planted trees and almost 100% from this problem …just coming out of pots into the ground .. But with the added precaution of protecting the trunk of fall planted trees that will get direct south sun I am now comfortable with fall planting… and for those in zone 6 or warmer there is no problem with fall planting at all. If you want to fall plant JM’s I am now convinced fall planting is just fine …with the added note that extremely far north zones may want to use some trunk protection. As long as you buy from a quality nursery like Davidsans fall purchasing is just fine for JMs.
Acer Psuedosieboldianum is a tree hardy to zone 4.. It grows maybe 12-15 ft over many years in those colder areas faster in more moderate ones ( 10 ft in 10 years in maple friendly areas). It is a very sturdy, very pretty upright tree that has an open canopy with very Boffo fall color of orange, purple and red … It has a very pretty Asian leaf roundish in shape sort of like a smaller Japonicum . It is closely related to the JM palmatum form .
I personally find this tree very nice and have never understood why it is so rare and hard to find . It gives the northern Jm’sters the ability to actually plant an Asian maple in their yard. This year I have a good supply of shippable Pseudosieboldianum in both upright and multi branched style … so you can have a upright tree or bush form, depending on placement .
Yes even you “almost” Canadians you can actually plant an Asian Maple in your yard and have something truly special that will stand out as an exceptional rare specimen single stem or multi stem tree!!
Both multi and single trunk Psuedosieboldianum are in VERY limited quantities and available on a first come first serve basis. Please email me through the contact page for both available sizes and prices and/or if you have interest and wish to reserve and buy one this spring.
Announcing the first web application for easily choosing your own special Japanese Maple, NOW exclusively at Davidsan’s. This is an app designed for the most experienced JM-sters to save them time, as well as beginners who have no clue where to start. We have spent many hours developing this app so you can choose the perfect JM that fits all your local conditions as well as size color and form requirements. We have taken the work out of the arduously long process of choosing a JM, with this one simple application. Use it, love it and get your list, then if you are still not sure and want an my opinion email me. Tell your friends about this and all the forums. They now have a place to easily pick their JM specimen(s) with minimal work .
Be sure to read the instructions on “How To Use This App” at right on the App page before you start. By doing so, you will not to not get too few or too many choices showing up. If you follow those3 instructions you should get a usable list to study further and to choose from.
Please let me know if you have suggestions on making this app better. It was thoroughly tested in a beta stage for weeks and was given good reviews. But I am sure there are ideas I have not thought that may be helpful in continuing it’s development. I use it daily when folks ask me to choose certain cultivars, and it has been a tremendous help to me. ( Having almost 400 cultivar available it is hard for me to remember all trees that might work for folks) .
Have fun and enjoy my new app.

Davidsans is also offering for the first time Japanese Maples that are NON GRAFTED and seed grown from SPECIFIC JM MOTHER TREES . These are NOT true cultivars,. They should not be confused with my grafted trees that have the same name that are actually are true named cultivars. . I call these seed grown trees Mongrels with Heritage (MWH) and all of these are identified and labeled with what mother tree they came from . They will be offered in 1 gallon size containers and band pots.
Remember seeds are not true to the mother three and may look like the mother tree or may vary So these can never be called true cultivars… But at the same this is a big plus for finicky bonsai folks who disdain grafted trees no matter how low or good the graft is graft mark . They get a non grafted tree that is from a specific named cultivar. Most all of these MWH’s will develop unique features but the band pots will take a while ( 2-3 years) to develop those .. The one gallons are already showing uniqueness and cultivar traits.
Most other seed grown trees you will find on the web or at nurseries are just common green or red acer palmatum and look boring and mundane. These Mongrel with Heritage JM’s will look really cool, different and often like a true cultivar. As special note: A good germination rate for straight species seed the basic A. palmatum as is sold other places as noted above ( mundane JMs) is 80%. For these mongrels , a measly 0-20% germination. For A. shirasawanum, germination is super low… let’s say 1-3%, and the same goes for A. sieboldianum. So these are truly special… (and why buying seeds of a named cultivar is generally a waist of time and a rip off unless you buy thousands).
These MWH Jms will be offered in 1 gallon containers 18 -24″ tall and in band pots 9-15″ , Price for all 1 gallons will be the same regardless of their mother heritage $28 ea..
Buy 6 or more assorted of these Mongrel one Gallons and your cost is $20 ea.
All band pots will also be priced the same regardless of what named mother tree they came from and will be $15 ea
Buy 10 or more assorted of these mongrel band pots and your price is $12 each.
A minimum of two (2) band pots must be purchased if they are to be shipped by themselves.
Both of these are “stand alone” discounts. Mongrel Band pots cannot be combined with Mongrel one gallons to achieve discounts. And these discounted mongrel trees cannot be combined with other trees to achieve any additional discounts or sale prices offered.
Band pots are obviously much smaller but work great for early training over rocks or with making a bonsai forest . And are great for those that want to start with smaller plants for intimate training all along the tree’s development.
My selection of one gallons is small but I think you will find them very cool trees .. MY selection of Band Pots is, I think, very nice .. Limited quantities on all these MWH’s
I don’t have these listed up on my site yet but will soon.
Finally, I would like to apologize to all my bonsai friends in advance . I will not take any pictures on any of these pre bonsai trees period there will be no exceptions .. It is way to much work for inexpensive trees. So please do not ask so I don’t feel bad about it.
Here is the list of Mongrel With Heritage Jms I will be carrying this spring. Both 1 gallons and band pots are listed:
The Bonsai Forest shown above are simple very young Acer Atropurpurium Jms basically grafting root stock..
The ones you will recieve will be MUCH bigger, Much More interesting, and have Distinct tree to tree variation as they are mothered from differnt named cultivars.
