This one is fast becoming a fav of mine. Delicate looking but substantial leaves. Really nice bright red colors and flushes in summer and early fall. A hardy beauty that seems to be much smaller than most others have it described.Translates to Red Mirror  

A new very small leaf bright red cultivar very very cool looks like a good bonsai tree .. it will take a little care like any smaller leafed lightly branched cultivar.but should do fine for more experience growers.. This one is very popular amongst enthusiasts and I can see why... it is very different and very cool... I have had some trouble with this cultivar so buyer beware ..It is not aggressive and in smaller trees you don't have much branching so if you get hit with a very hot summer you are in trouble .. probably best kept in container and only bought as a larger tree . unfortunately larger specimens do not exist . Translate to: "Beni Silk Kimono" 

A great bamboo leaved red Jm but give a little shade. It is VERY hardy and great for this area . I always recommend this one  for around here. It is a tried and proven hardy tree of medium size … It won’t overgrow it’s area, .and has nice upright form. would prefer some mid day shadeTranslates to Big Red Bamboo

This is a great Japanese import..not from this country or other Japanese wannabee countries . It has very nice color and is a good companion for those that want an orange fall color tree to go with their red ones. Any dissectum that has orange /red fall color is the exception rather than the rule and should be seen as a great opportunity to extend your variety of colors therefore a must have. It has one of the nicest form of as any dissectum I grow period .. super cool stature as seen in the jpeg of a smaller one

This one looks to be special . Very hardy as well as finely leaved. It can take some sun and stays small …has great color throughout the season …what more could ya want “Don’t mess with the Gohan” ( zohan) it’s a keeper. I have grown several of these and still consider the best of the small linearilobun ( bamboo leaf ). Likes and does well in shade and stays even smaller but can take some sun .. holds color in shade which is always a plusAlso spelled as Beni ubi gohan

Palmatum

This tree has large seven-lobed leaves that are quite distinctive with the divide going to the junction of the leaf base. The lobe tips are tail like and sharply pointed and evenly toothed. Vigorous and bushy, upright tree. Large serrated leaves. Introduced by Buchholtz

This hardy cultivar has obviously NOTHING to do with the common dissectum Crimson Queen. It is a nice, not so small palmatum like a Bloodgood with an uncanny ability to hold its red well all season. Add this to your collection of "better than Bloodgood" JMs, it surely has a place where you just have to have another great red upright that isn't simply a seasonal one ( spring and fall like many)

This is an outdated cultivar available everywhere. I don't care much for it, and there is nothing wrong with a CQ.  It is just very ordinary and other dissectums are much nicer . This one grows relatively fast and get very large.Sculptural, cascading branches and finely dissected, colorful leaves make this classic selection one of the finest of the deep red lace leafs. Foliage emerges bright crimson, deepens to burgundy in summer and finishes with brilliant scarlet in fall, maintaining its color despite summer heat and humidity. The elegant, mounding plant produces a dense, broadly spreading structure that makes a dramatic impact near water, on a bank or in a courtyard setting.

This new selection is VERY nice . It has many colors throughout the growing season . It looks to be a fast grower that does not get huge. The toothy smaller longer node leaves are very cool and layered. I have been pleasantly surprised with this cultivar .. I really like it.  Introduced by Del Loucks.

It is unusual to find a Dissectum with this very dark shade of red almost a black red . It seems hardy and is finely dissected . It does though need a bit of shade or it will crisp.. I really like this one and the name describes it extremely well . I have had one in a pot for a couple of years and just planted it out .. It is truly different standing distinctly out among the many similar lighter or brighter red dissectums. It does not like wet areas and needs wind protection in colder winter areas

Shrubby little lace leaf that reaches 3'x3' at ten years.  Great colors. 

New growth is an interesting brown-red and it has unique, very dissected leaves. It has various shades of red in the summer, We LOVE this tree, it really stands out in our greenhouses.

This is a nice newer tree that is very pretty in every respect … likes a bit of sun to color out .It has a very graceful look and great fall color. A great addition to your “little tree” collection.I have found this to be one of ther best new al;l around dwarfs out there ... very hardy and can take some sun ... with the right siting red all season .. a tight more upright form... on my top 10 dwarf list...A must have

Beautiful red finely dissected leaf

A great hardy red dwarf that holds it's color well in summer... any smaller reds are always a welcome addition for a seller like myself and you just can't have too many , folks just love red JMs and smaller ones are so versatile. They fit virtually anywhere this one has a very narrow habit and and is a medium sized dwarf, it also has very deep red leaves which is unusual for very small dwarfs. This one has outstanding color, habit and with such a small size ya can't go wrong.It is one of my favorite new dwarfs

A very nice linearilobum strap leaf /bamboo leaf . Much skinnier leaves than most of it's kind .. long and skinny   holds color better than most reds in summer . I think this is one of the best bamboo leaf JMs out there and the darkest red .. it does not get big and grows slowly...it is a real find and must have

 Also known as Dissectum Nigrum, Nigrum Dissectum, and Dissectum Atrosanguineum.Very old cultivar which made its way to America via Europe.  It holds its deep red color through mid summer, better than most red dissectums. Known in Europe as Dissectum Nigrum and given the name Ever Red when it arrived in America. 10-year size 4'x4'

This new pint size dwarf, true to it's name is bright. But is is not gaudy and in fact a bit more muted than some other newer similar cultivars. It has a great form and shape that is upright and shorter branches keeping leaves a bit closer in . It should put a smile on any ones face wanting a smaller re JM to grace their garden or special spot. I really like this one and it has done great in hot summers and cold winters. There is really nothing like it on the market unfortunately it is hard to graft and not readily available. Zone 6 tree. 

This tree, when it has sun in the background absolutely glows like it's name. Very bright, very hardy medium grower. I  highly recommend this one. A bit of afternoon shade will help it but needs some sun to glow. This is the best of the semi-new bloodgood type trees. Triple trunk trees are especially nice giving a bit smaller tree but much more full and we have fireglow in both single and triple trunk (No multi trunk in 2018 season). This is a must have for any collector and a great choice for the "I want one really nice JM for my yard" crowd.  About 10 feet at ten years. Amoenum style of leaf. 

Glowing bright red leaves don't turn dark in the summer.

This a very nice tree but not often available these days .. folks have passed this one up for newer cultivars that I don't think are as good for the most part . fast growing likes sun bright orangeish red in spring and fall  and holds its red unto the summer very hardy and very vigorous... it is a keeper

This is a Garnet developed to be red upright like the green Sieryu .. Like most other Sieryu  ( red dissectum) wannabees it falls a bit short on it's claim to fame, but to it's credit it IS a lot more upright than any other red dissectum. So it's not perfect but still different than the common Garnet and all other red dissectum and will be much more upright for those with limited width in their siting, and like the Garnet it holds its color well in summer and is a VERY fast grower

 A striking red linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that has very long narrow leaves . This tree will not outgrow it's surroundings. it is as cute as a button .. ( are buttons cute???) and works well with other green linearilobum especially the equally small green leaf linearilobum Kinshi.. A great tree to add to your collection or a good beginner tree since all bamboo leaf JMs are easy to grow . Smaller size makes it perfect for small gardens

A nice new bloodgood type JM that holds color in summer much better than bloodgood or most other JMs .. It was developed for the south . This past horrible 2012 summer it was a world class winner among the scant few that did okay in full sun and held it's color can take sun and wind better than most . Has a very nice tree form . Is also hardy like it’s cousin . Great fall color.If you want that illusive full sun red this is as good as it gets

This is absolutely the best new dwarf out there I am extremely impressed by it ..it is hardy sturdy compact and an all around boffo red dwarf . It is a must have for any collection!! Zone 6 tree. 

Another great hardy sun taking linearilobum . More of a tree than others ( less bushy) If you are looking for a good basic bamboo leaf type for most placements …this is it. Can take most any condition and is a very sturdy JM. Very pretty when backlit with sun. It is super hardy and very very pretty. I have one in my yard and I love it

A smaller bloodgood type for that “just fits in” location . Grows slowly and unlikely to outgrow it’s space as many other JM’s do. Very hardy  takes sun and wind . This is a great tree but not often available

Similar to fireball but much more colorful with many different colors on the tree throughout the season, thus the name. I became a believer in this tree once I planted it out .. It is sturdy, small, hardy JM, and can take sun... what else would you ask for .. In pots I had problems with it and almost wrote it off but since planting out I am astonished how cool it is. Great for your collection. I highly recommend this one

One great Linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that keeps it's red color throughout the summer well ... great form and substance .. one of my favorites!! Can take sun or shade... it has stunning fall color and as you can see by the jpeg usually has lots of red seeds ( Samara ) that give it a spectacular look

Dwarf tree that has stages of red through the year.  Zone is not fully known, could live in Zone 5, but not enough data yet to state that with full confidence.  Can take some sun, but keep an eye on it.

I have always lusted after this tree since first acquiring a specimen and wanted badly to offer it to others especially in the north as an alternative to all those friggin' Bloodgoods!!. Now I have found them. This is probably one of the best red smaller to mid sized red upright JM I own. It does not lose its color in summer, is hardy, and takes some wetness. It seems to grow slowly at least up here. If you want a great red smaller upright... Lozita is for you.

Upgrade your Bloodgood with this baby. It is similar but a definite improvement in color shape and form. It is not as bright as Fire Glow but similar in habit but more slender/narrow with larger leaves and upright form. I would call it the deep cousin of Fireglow or better yet "Red sky at night" ("sailor delight" ). It is a VERY nice tree for your yard and can with time get much bigger than Fireglow

This another new bloodgood type with bright pink new leaves in spring and shiny dark red in summer and great multicolored leaves in fall .. A somewhat fast grower that forms a medium sized broad  sturdy hardy tree.this is a full and upright great yard tree

This is a very very cool red cultivar but has a brightness that rivals Fireglow but brighter.. there may be two trees with this name as some sources have it as a dark purple .. the ones I have are brighter and stunning to say the least.. It holds it's color the summer better than Bloodgood. I have this one planted out and it is spectacular and a fast grower.  About 8' at ten years. Matsumurae Leaf shape. 

NEW!!!  Dark purple dissectum, newer growth is hot pink. Very frilly! 

Wow I have finally found this tree. I love mine... it is among the hardiest cultivars I have. It is sturdy fast growing holds its red well in sun and heat. Why anyone would want a stinkin' Bloodgood over this is beyond me. And why this tree is not cultivated more and therefore more readily available is also beyond me. It is simply a truly great deep red larger upright JM that everyone having the space to plant it should have.  It is an old Japanese cultivars from 1688. There are two types of these one being lighter red and one being dark red. Both are keepers but likely the darker red is the correct cultivar

The current cultivar we carry is also known as Ever Red.  Due to fluctuations of stock from differing growers, we cannot definitively state if our current or future stock is indirectly from JD Vertrees stock of Dissectum Nigrum. "This is also called Ever Red but most ever reds are not true to this cultivar .., we have the true dissectum Nigrum Pronounced " ny grum or nie grum" very dark red through summer if shaded, in sun it will bronze out mid summer .. it is so cool .. very different than other cultivars. The dark red is strikingly different. This is one I just put in stock and I really like it . this one is the true cultivar and comes indirectly from JD Vertrees stock." -- David pre-2017

. It's brilliant color in spring and even more boffo in fall make this tree an all around winner. This is a superior re Jm in every aspect. Many think this is the same as Musashino but I find it to be smaller but with similar characteristics but holds color better in full sun..I don't see it as the same tree . Of all the trees I had in the intense full sun summer of 2012 . This tree did better than most all reds with very little leaf burn .. I highly recommend this super hardy very pretty upright cultivar.Name translates to "Wet heron"

Hyper cool red tree with great great color both red leaves and branches. This is a great red upright JM. This one should be a great yard JM or specimen that won’t overwhelm. VERY hard to get not often available each year .. it is one of the best reds available but an older cultivar it will green out in summer in shade . Predates Bloodgoods and has been passed by . I feel that is an injustice since this is a MUCH better tree than Bloodgood or Emperor one .. . I would carry it as a mainstay if it were ever available

A very nice different smaller tree with great season long coloration. The name in Japanese means "Gold calico Cloth" referring to the golden hue on top of the summer color as well as the the fall coloration ... overall just an outstanding hardy cultivar with the added plus of being diminutive.  Approx 8' x 4' at ten years. 

This is a hardy compact dwarf like wider cultivar. It gets very broad and has habit similar to a large dissectum. The color is spectacular and is deserving of a special place in your yard , a place of great visibility to be admired. Some may consider this a semi dwarf. It has a unique stature that is very pleasing .. It is one of my faves ..VERY different

Good red fast grower nice branching upright structure, and is an offspring of the famous Bloodgood.We have a beautiful one planted on the north side of our office.  Fully exposed to the north and west winds of winter. 

A Korean cultivar that has very long linearilobum/bamboo leaves .. It is very pretty and seems to be much less touchy than the Red pygmy .... holds it's red color well ,can take some sun and like most all linearilobums are super hardy . Basically everything ya want in a small tree It looks like a keeper

This is one of many red Bamboo leaf specimens but one of the better smaller ones . Not "officially" a dwarf but could be considered such . These Linearilobum are among the hardiest of the palmatums and are easy to grow, takes more sun, wetness, and dryness than other palmatums .. I really like red cloud for a smaller bamboo leaf cultivar

This is an excellent red dissectum that is super hardy to zone 5 and fairly sun resistant., better than most red dissectums. It is an all around winner and considered by many the best red dissectum on the market today.

This an extremely fine leafed dissected tree that stays small, grows slowly, is super hardy, and is untouched by sun . What more could you want. it is really super cool. I love this one . It holds it's color all summer (even though I have bronze in my description) ... I have not seen bronze as others have.mine stays fire engine red. it is one really special red smaller heavily dissected mounding tree ... perfect for that special spot.

This is the one everyone wants and is hard to get. It is a relatively new Dissectum both greatly dissected and frilly. Some may consider this one a bit girly …so if you’re a guy (unlike myself )who is on a manly /macho “trip”  give it to your girlfriend or wife or both. And so what if they call you a "girly man" you'll still have one of the prettiest dissectums around to look at when your not watching Nascar.

One of my Wife’s  favs.  Very nice color throughout the summer very hardy and open tree only good things can come from getting this one. You’ll love it!!

This is a truly phenomenal smaller dissectum with super fine leaves but grows relatively fast compared to others of this genre. It takes full sun at least up here and is super hardy with never any winter die back. I don't think this one will get too big and if it does it will be after many years . Perfect for that smaller area especially in the north .. this one is one of the hardiest dissectums i have found . It is VERY pretty and highly recommended !!!!This is the same as Beni kumo no su

This is a brand new super cool dissectum. It is of most beautiful color shape and form. Discovered and introduces by one of the world's foremost JM collectors who has an eye for such JMs that is so exquisite you better not pass this one up. fall color is especially outstanding with red leaves with unique yellow veins.  Survives Zone 5b in our area. 

A very low grower with VERY finely dissected leaves . Red is it’s color, a dwarfed mound that is short and slightly spreading.With the most exquisite leaves you’ll ever see. Zone 6

A very fast growing upright tree with a narrow form . This tree is a reliably great red all season and super hardy. This is just simply a beauty .. If you looking for a medium size red this is a very good choice

This is a new spectacular dwarf that is as colorful as any I have seen .I put this one above both Fire Ball and Kandy Kitchen …but all three stand on their own and are a matter of personal preference.. A truly great new introduction

This is another Bloodgood type tree but smaller. The big difference is that the red on this tree is phenomenal ten times as bright and flashy as it's taller relative(s). It just absolutely glows in spring summer and fall ... This one needs a bit of shade and is hardy but is a slow grower , so it would go in almost any placement for that special tree.  

A really nice small red with medium size palmatum leaves. Bright red and can take lots of sun, very hardy, one of David's favorites!  Approx 6' x 4' at ten years. 

Another of the Bloodgood types .Great all around hardy tree with good sun resistance and good color all season . This is an all around perfect upright red JM for the yard. The fall red colors surpass the Bloodgood in my opinion.

A simply great red dwarf with thick and bright clumps of leaves. It can take some sun. This is a true small gem that will fit just about anywhere and is really different.. I do not recommend this for containers it is water sensitive .. but in the ground does well even in north.  Zone 6 tree. 

A very cool dwarf with highly divided leaves and a great darker red color . Leaves seem a bit larger than most dwarfs not in width but length making this one a superbly different specimen . A must have

This is a semi dwarf Shojo ... the Japanese words mean red princess. It is of super nice form and stays fairly columnar . A very cool dark that holds well the red season thru . This is not a broom, so no reversion or unforeseen changes over time and should be VERY hardy. Zone 6 tree. 

This is another older super hardy red cultivar for northerners and others as well . It seems to take just about anything thrown at it. In the north it holds its color well in summer in south it greens out . It is of a smaller size than Bloodgood but of the same ilk for those that want a Bloodgood type tree but have space limitations.... and IMHO much cooler in every aspect than the overused Bloodgood.

This is a vigorous grower so give some protection in colder areas cause of late growth and tenderness. It is similar to other more dwarf JM’s like Royle with its small tightly clustered leaves. Supposedly a relative of the Bloodgood in smaller form …but doesn’t seem quite as hardy . VERY VERY pretty more so than the Bloodgood and a tree everyone should own even in a container if necessary.

Another one I poo poo’d at first. Then its outstanding color and semi upright shape struck me. This is one very nice different dissectum. Various shades of red during summer make this most unusual. Marlon Brando would be proud ( Stellaaaaaaaa)

White and pink (strawberry) ruffled leaves with extremely prominent dark green veins. Slow growing new cultivar for us.  Height is unknown at this time. 

A new smaller SEMI dwarf bloodgood type .. very very nice It has been called Swat Margaret .. I hate that name and it does no justice to how nice a dwarf open upright red this is . Finding a truly open branched faster growing dwarf reds is special. a must have. This one is VERY hardy( -20) although I have placed it in -15 for safty purposes for this area and does descent in full sun HERE. It is no longer in production but may be available .A new smaller semi dwarf  bloodgood  type .. very very nice Finding a truly open branched  faster growing dwarf reds is special. a must have. I have grown this for several years and am very pleased with it. It grows slowly so it won't outgrow it's spot. It takes heat pretty well and sun and is very hardy in winter. Bright red new growth in spring, dark maroon leaves in summer contrast with the bright green bark. Sometimes this cultivar shows white variegation on the maroon leaves.

The hardiest of any red dissectum hands down . Can take some sun is a fast grower, can get big. If you want a great red dissectum for this area this one is a must have. This one is extremely easy to grow recommended for a beginner but a must have for everyone!!

This is semi dwarf red cultivar. It seems to be another bloodgood offspring. It is very pretty and seems to be a bit brighter than it's cousin. It keeps its color well throughout the season. It is a thick column-shaped tree that will look perfect in place that needs a bit of filling but not too much.

A newer red palmatum that holds color well can take some sun and wind very nice sturdy upright tree . This one looks to be a keeper.  Formerly known as Cristy Ann, per Vertrees book, 4th edition. 

bloodgood/witch's broom. Petite clumping leaf growth. Very small, slow grower.This is the only dwarf bloodgood in existence VERY RARE we are one of just maybe 2 sellers of this cultivar in the USA. VERY HARDY

A smaller hardy red upright that is just what a lot of folks want for those non - Ponderosa yards . It is stunning in both color and shape and forms just one beautiful smaller tree. I have been watching this one and it is a special red .. fast grower and very cool.. not your fathers Red Japanese Maple

Another upright red cultivar that is very hardy . All of these usually do well here and this one  holds color especially well throughout the heat of the season . It is a reliable and very sun and cold hardy tree... a keeper

A very hardy red JM that keeps it's color well throughout the summer This JM is a fairly fast grower and very sturdy . A real winner for this part of the country . It has become a favorite of mine for both it’s distinctive form and color that it holds especially well even into hot weather. Although Vertrees saw variegation in it, no one else has …So if ya do see variegation in the Yubae let me know and what you were “on “ at the time . But it really doesn’t need it, it is simply a truly beautiful JM in it’s own right. One of the best upright reds I have found .

Red leafed Acer shirasawanum, that can take full sun. It is a pretty red. 

Long, narrow leaf lobes. Lots of purple on this tree. 

Color and form at it's best . A really hardy sturdy colorful tree can take some sun and wind . This one is a winner all around .. it basically has everything in a red hardiness , sun worthiness ... gorgeous color, and the dad-gum prettiest leaf you will ever see..and will do well for you.... it may be a hybrid Palmatum /Shirasawanum .. but it is the only red Shirasawenum that stays red all summer .. it is gorgeous and can get big in maple friendly areas.

European Beech with shiny, purple-red, wavy-edged leaves. Tight columnar tree with upward growing short branches.
