This is between a Acer palmatum and Acer circinatum. It has disc shaped leaves and cool purple stems.This tree has superior fall color. The name in German means autumn fire. It is very vigorous and upright with really cool larger leaves which sets it apart from most other JMs as well as wide branching for those that like a nice full colorful tree. This one has outstanding fall color and very nice all season look.This is actually a circinatum- palmatum hybrid with stunning fall color . It becomes a fairly large tree and is a vigorous grower. Pink short stems on new growth is a great plus. leaves are very pretty and toothy .. a very cool tree.
This is an unusual weeping snake bark maple with variegated leaves ... strikingly colorful with winter bark interest. Snake bark maples have white vertical stripes

This is one of the best new hybrid trees for northern areas. It has year round exfoliating bark although not as pronounced as Griseum.. and is sun and cold hardy ... and best yet has the best fall red colors of any tree in our nursery .. If you live north this is a must haveThis super cool tree has exfoliating bark in winter and spectacular fall color .. it's exfoliation is not as striking as a pure griseum but leaf shape and color is MUCH nicer, lose some winter appeal but really gain big time the rest of the year a great trade off if ya ask me since how often do ya go in your yard in winter?? A new Japonicum that has great potential . The least of which it adds another VERY hardy cultivar to your list of super safe JMs for colder climates. My one year experience with this tree is very very positive it is super cool and a keeper . the photo was in early fall the red is very nice in late fall and it hold a nice long time .. This should be on your list.Whether this is a japonicum or shirasawanum has not yet been decided. Is this Ruby or Ruby Red. Time will tell.
This is a small version of the vitifolium with different less dissected leaves.It makes a great small tree and shrub with class and eye catching fall color. Leaf size and shape will get ya lots of "what the heck is this beautiful tree".
This unique cultivar has huge leaves that look like grape leaves …"Vitis" is the grape genus. It has stiff branches and leaves with little dissection giving it a lot of substance and good texture, The basic color is a good deep green , but the fall color is one of the best with spectacular combo of red ,orange, yellow. I have found this tree to be hardy, takes sun well but part shade best and does not bud early like Katsura .. This is considered a semi dwarf But I see it as a true dwarf so it should fit nicely in many installations...Spring color is as nice as Orange dream and stays very nice throughout the season greening out just a bit.. This is on my most fave new tree listZone 6 tree, but some claim to grow in Zone 5, be wary and keep an eye on yours if you try it.

Musashino is one of my all time favorite larger JMs which is super hardy, beefy and gorgeous. This one has different tones of red . If you are looking for a larger JM this is it!! This tree has a ghost like look to it in the spring. Supposed to go green with darker shadings in the summer and the fall color is yellow to red. Height estimates are hard to come by. A red version with this given id can go over twelve feet in ten years, but the green version is more prone to be over six feet in ten years. . We have the green version available in limited quantities in 2019.
When i first saw listings for the "Ghost" series I thought they had "over ghosted" the name....Ghost this Ghost that . And really many are alike but about 4 ( including this one )are truly cool and worthy of owning . All selected seedlings of either Aka Shigitasu sawa or just plain Shigitasu sawa... they offer a unique oddity to any JM collection . This tree is a very cool smaller variegated cultivar very worthy of your ownership. This could be in the dwarf section but I would classify it as semi dwarf.

This is a better red branched variety than most others and one I would recommend for all BUT northern areas ( I really have found all bright red branched trees do not do well in the north although some of the orange branched ones like Glowing Embers seem to do well). It has a very nice shape and the leaves are really pretty all season So if you like red branches for winter color and great leaf color in spring summer and fall this is a good choice for a smaller nicely shaped tree... That will fit most spaces needing color all season.More hardy than a Sango Kaku
A new very small leaf bright red cultivar very very cool looks like a good bonsai tree .. it will take a little care like any smaller leafed lightly branched cultivar.but should do fine for more experience growers.. This one is very popular amongst enthusiasts and I can see why... it is very different and very cool... I have had some trouble with this cultivar so buyer beware ..It is not aggressive and in smaller trees you don't have much branching so if you get hit with a very hot summer you are in trouble .. probably best kept in container and only bought as a larger tree . unfortunately larger specimens do not exist . A great bamboo leaved red Jm but give a little shade. It is VERY hardy and great for this area . I always recommend this one for around here. This tree has almost linearilobum type leaves that are deeply cut. The colors range from stunning to subtle throughout the season. It seems to be a slow grower and will stay small for a while . This tree has a really cool look from afar and close up and will be sure to please you all summer long . A bit of shade will help it as with all variegates.In spring, the leaves are purple with green edges.
Similar to the Butterfly but much more color especially pink in spring and summer and more orange in fall . If you like Butterfly as i do this is a must have and a more interesting tree IMHO than butterfly.. It is not as subtle so i recommend it as one the is different enough to have in addition to Butterfly...or as a stand alone. Both these trees are truly different than any other JM's. Both seem very hardy. Pink/Orange can be found within the white in spring and summer. Other spellings of Beni schichihenge are known to be used.
This one looks to be special . Very hardy as well as finely leaved. It can take some sun and stays small …has great color throughout the season …what more could ya want “Don’t mess with the Gohan” ( zohan) it’s a keeper. I have grown several of these and still consider the best of the small linearilobun ( bamboo leaf ). This is a fantastic tree I have it in full sun and does fine but a bit of noon shade would help . the colors are red all season and in fall orange red. I have seen this listed as a separate plant or another name for Seigai . I think it is not Seigai but similar ... The leaf form and color do not match up . this tree is a great one for smaller spots where you want a traditional upright red JM with a very different look from the dreaded Bloodgood. It is a slow grower and super cool won't outgrow it's space.

A really cool nicely shaped tree full with larger leaves . As the name stated it's bright red seeds held way into the summer and fall against it's summer green leaf color is eye catching and very pretty . This is a very very nice sturdy mid sized tree. Does great in full shade or mostly sun. VERY study and has become a fav of mine unfortunately not always available. and usually just in larger sizes. I have one in an area where I sit to relax daily sometimes in my hammock and have grown to really love it. In a shady area like mine it tends to be more shrub like growing more outwards than up. Even if it greens out the seeds stay red throughout the season
This a newer American cultivar that is super cool highly divided leaves super sturdy and hardy strong grower.. and gets big but can easily be trimmed for smaller spaces.. remember my sizes are for colder non perfect JM growing areas.. in 10 years only . If you put this in full sun like most other red JMs it will burn so a little noon to 3 pm shade best It is a super nice cultivar with brilliant fall colors
This is a new cultivar which shows great promise . It was discovered by a really critical JM collector and named for it's very good color and form . A semi Dwarf it fits well in many surroundings. After growing this I would definitely put it on my must have list. It is in the top ten of new cultivars IMHO You should have this one for your collection!!
The distinctive green and white variegation is evident throughout the season. Butterfly forms as small upright tree in a more conical shape. It likes and needs a bit of shade but can take a lot of sun.This is a very colorful and exquisite sort of tree that I have found, contrary to the internet blowhards, is very hardy not tender at all. It is mostly green with white edge variegation, some reddish undertones in spring, and then white, green with bright red in fall; and is not hit or miss, it is reliably variegated on all leaves.. Other JM's are available with more red undertones but this one is very nice indeed, and the variegation seems to hold well as it ages unlike many others that get less so with age.
Super fabulous spring color .and good summer and fab fall color.. like a surreal season long experience ...very cool need a bit of shade... keep this phenomenal tree containerized in northern areas since it seems to be an early bud'er...but is worth having you won't be sorry see photo!! Another great larger red hardy Jm has been added to the Davidsan stable. It is wider than Bloodgood but not as tall .. an excellent tree that holds it color well thru the summer .Has a very open form not twiggy like most bloodgood types. In the time I have observed this tree it has become a favorite .. it is very very pretty and superbly graceful. As per Vertrees book 4th edition, This is now known as Vandermoss Red.
A new tree I really like . it is very very pretty and graceful like its name evokes .. can get big an open and very cool cultivar . Leaves are stunning in shape and color in this larger JM is spectacular.
This is a smaller tree that is in the Katsura/Akane vein. It has superb spring color and is bright throughout the season. Being a new cultivar we do not know much about it but is an Akane like cultivar , it should be a winner. The photo shows bright summer color on a sturdy plant.
A good spring color burst followed by a slow summer change to green then red in fall. A larger more upright dwarf. Very pretty and hardy and can handle some sun. Photo is late summer green. Zone 6 tree.
A brand new Harold Johnson cultivar. It has great variegation that hold into the mid summer or longer in shaded areas. Its variegation is large green with white slashes of color quite phenomenal. Then later turns top solid good medium red. It looks like a keeper. Size is unknown but appears to be a smaller tree or shrub dwarfish but not a true dwarf. As with all of the late Harold's cultivars , this one looks like a true winner .. a Butterfly type but a bit smaller cultivar with much more brilliant variegation.Zone 6, but a few say they can grow it in Zone 5, so be wary.
This tree has large seven-lobed leaves that are quite distinctive with the divide going to the junction of the leaf base. The lobe tips are tail like and sharply pointed and evenly toothed. Vigorous and bushy, upright tree. Large serrated leaves.

This hardy cultivar has obviously NOTHING to do with the common dissectum Crimson Queen. It is a nice, not so small palmatum like a Bloodgood with an uncanny ability to hold its red well all season. Add this to your collection of "better than Bloodgood" JMs, it surely has a place where you just have to have another great red upright that isn't simply a seasonal one ( spring and fall like many)
This is our namesake tree. It is a chance Atropurpureum seedling (which is the mother tree to many JM cultivars) that really grew on me as it aged!! . It is a very slow grower. the JM is a very open structured tree with an outward horizontal branching structure that is compact and upright. It's amber hairy slightly puffed up leaves are stunning throughout the season with a blaze of crimson red in fall that is mind boggling .This is a truly special tree that has withstood 20 below temps and the deep freeze of '06 with no damage whatsoever. The mother tree is 16 years old and about 10' tall . If you would like more photos please let me know. Does best with a lot of sun and does not generally burn . Update: Mother tree is 15' tall at 23 years old.
A nice smaller addition to any dwarf collection very pretty with nice color. I do not see it getting as big as stated and is upright in form. A nice fit for any small garden with a great name... it will become your own personal cat in a hat. Zone 6 tree.
This is a very good all around red cultivar that gets maybe 15 ft over many years and holds color well in sun . It would need part shade in hotter locals . It is a new fav of mine .. great form very full and a chunky tree once it gets a few years on it .. grows fairly slow.. It may bronze out a bit in heat of summer but will at least have a reddish tone . It is also very hardy
All around great tree with the most phenomenal fall color you could want. Just an “elegant” tree . I have grown this tree for a while and it is really cool or elegant as they say . super cool delicate leaves along with a real nice Jm form in a small tree that won't outgrow it's welcome . Also does great in containers since it is slow growing and stay smaller longer. This tree gets as wide as tall but is of uprighyt form not bushy simply put an all arounfd fav . of mine you can't go wrong with this one
This is a very nice small Jm. It has loads of larger/longer leaves . The leaves have a slight curve to them giving it a distinctive look. also known as Elmwoodie. It is striking in fall and in spring has deep green veins on its new leaves with some undertones of pink and other colors

Very nice tree keeps color well throughout the summer ...But not too much sun contrary to what you read. This tree is not a fast grower here but give it a bit of space. A great hardy red dwarf that holds it's color well in summer... any smaller reds are always a welcome addition for a seller like myself and you just can't have too many , folks just love red JMs and smaller ones are so versatile. They fit virtually anywhere this one has a very narrow habit and and is a medium sized dwarf, it also has very deep red leaves which is unusual for very small dwarfs. This one has outstanding color, habit and with such a small size ya can't go wrong.It is one of my favorite new dwarfs
A very nice linearilobum strap leaf /bamboo leaf . Much skinnier leaves than most of it's kind .. long and skinny holds color better than most reds in summer . I think this is one of the best bamboo leaf JMs out there and the darkest red .. it does not get big and grows slowly...it is a real find and must have
This is a superior JM for the south does okay in heat. I have been unable toi get it for a couple years since some mistakenly think it is not as good as Heffner's red. I not so humbly disagree .. my EPs do green out a bit in summer but stay super nice all season .they are pretty fast growers.. In addition they are super hardy and too particular of where they are planted .. I really like this plant
This is a terrific tree with one of the most outstanding displays of fall color that seems to last and last.it has very large leaves larger than most every palmatums with washes of warm color in spring and especially fall. It may be related to the Omure yama another outstanding tree. But this tree is a hardy strong upright cultivar.
I think this is just a fabulous tree .. It is on my top ten and is both super hardy and very pretty. Leaves are heavily serrated and pointed and medium sized.. it is fairly thickly branched . Mine has grown slowly under a lot of shade but in fall ZOWIE it pops .. it is suppose to get big and probably does in better growing areas but mine looks destined to be a semi dwarf for years. Summer jpeg show will try to get a fall one up soon..it is strikingly bright red. Highly recommended
This newer JM is surprisingly pretty with nice flushes of seasonal color toothy leaves .that give this tree a distinct look. I have come, rather quickly, to really like this tree. It has become one of my favorites . Its true beauty is not flashy like some but subtle coolness you'll really love.
This tree, when it has sun in the background absolutely glows like it's name. Very bright, very hardy medium grower. I highly recommend this one. A bit of afternoon shade will help it but needs some sun to glow. This is the best of the semi-new bloodgood type trees. Triple trunk trees are especially nice giving a bit smaller tree but much more full and we have fireglow in both single and triple trunk (No multi trunk in 2018 season). This is a must have for any collector and a great choice for the "I want one really nice JM for my yard" crowd. About 10 feet at ten years. Amoenum style of leaf.
This is a very nice Ghost with a truly white leaf color ... should have some shade but as all variegates need at least a bit of sun to achieve best color.. I think any and all of the Ghost series are a must have's and this is no exception it is very nice!! ... and remember they are all derived from Aka shigitasu sawa ... one of my top ten favorite JMs
Starting as a seedling from Musashino. It mainly has five-lobed medium sized leaves. In spring they are coppery red followed shortly with variegated bright pink / red. Going purple / red in summer. The variegation shows in patches and flashes and sometimes occupies the whole leaf.
This one is not well known. . Why??? I don’t know…maybe some don’t appreciate how cool it is … The leaves are perfect shaped and do not burn easily … the green during summer is strikingly deep . The fall colors are like a rainbow and the shape is perfect. This one is my current favorite in this group.It is both hardy and can take some sun but is a slow grower and won't soon outgrow it's space .. I have one in my front yard . This is one of the best newer JMs hands down
This is a new introduction from Japan. It is a red bamboo leaf ( linearilobum) dwarf... and as many of you know that is a rare combination. One very very cool trait that differentiates it from all others of it's genre is red stems that stay red all season .. very cool highlight very promising cultivar. Must have for any collector.Zone 6, but a few claim they can grow it in Zone 5, so be wary.
This is a Garnet developed to be red upright like the green Sieryu .. Like most other Sieryu ( red dissectum) wannabees it falls a bit short on it's claim to fame, but to it's credit it IS a lot more upright than any other red dissectum. So it's not perfect but still different than the common Garnet and all other red dissectum and will be much more upright for those with limited width in their siting, and like the Garnet it holds its color well in summer and is a VERY fast grower
This is a very nice variegate which is similar to the rather garish Shirazz and seems to hold it's color a bit better in summer and is definitely smaller in stature .. It is a selected seedling of Geisha but is different and a very nice JM. I would give it a bit of shade contrary to what some may say. hate the name but really like the cultivar seems hardy and can take some sun. Zone 6 tree.
A striking red linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that has very long narrow leaves . This tree will not outgrow it's surroundings. it is as cute as a button .. ( are buttons cute???) and works well with other green linearilobum especially the equally small green leaf linearilobum Kinshi.. A great tree to add to your collection or a good beginner tree since all bamboo leaf JMs are easy to grow . Smaller size makes it perfect for small gardens
One of the best JM's for sun if you don't have a partial shaded spot ... has great color in spring, does not burn in summer and glows in fall. I personally like this tree even if you don’t have a sun problem. It is just a really pretty nicely shaped upright grower. It has become in it’s own right a favorite of mine. And being able to place it anywhere …how can ya lose. Highly recommended developed for the south
A very cool addition to the Ghost family with a bit more color than some and much larger leaves the green veins in the leaf are really cool under the subtle variegated color in spring and summer .. it also has very nice fall coloration.. A great purchase for anyone who can give it 11am til 4 pm shade in summer
This is a really cool green Amoenum...that has a sharp tipped star like shape but with the larger sized less divided leaves of a traditional Amoenum. It is hardy sturdy and can take sun. It does not mind heat. A great tree for colder or warmer areas.

This tree has exceptional fall color with sand dusted or "fu" of yellow and brown on the predominate red. The red in spring and light green summer are most pleasing but the wait for fall is most worthy of doing so. This one is a show stopper for those wanting a smaller JM with a good full spread
I have always liked this cultivar but hard to get and have recently found some ...It is a very nice larger tree but I have it down to medium because it is a slow grower. Great fall super red color..hardy and study .. a great lawn tree.
A nice new bloodgood type JM that holds color in summer much better than bloodgood or most other JMs .. It was developed for the south . This past horrible 2012 summer it was a world class winner among the scant few that did okay in full sun and held it's color can take sun and wind better than most . Has a very nice tree form . Is also hardy like it’s cousin . Great fall color.If you want that illusive full sun red this is as good as it gets

This is a classy cultivar with leaves lobes that are divided completely to stalk. It is a medium sized tree but slow grower . full grown it may be 12 ft. color is spectacular in both spring and especially in fall . Fall color is simple brilliant. It is a hardy and sturdy tree in branching and branchettes as well as trunk... A good for lawn settings where a smaller tree is needed
This seems like an upright version of Abigail Rose . As like the Abby it is a surprisingly pretty and hardy selection for a variegated JM . The spring variegated colors are phenomenal and truly different from any other JM that I have observed . The summer blushes are different from spring and cool in their own right. A must have JM that can be kept as bush or tree shape.This in my opinion is absolutely the best upright variegate. It is VERY hardy , takes some sun , very sturdy and compact just an all around winner . If you are looking for a smaller variegated upright JM this is absolutely the best choice hands down
Of all the new ones this is my "current" favorite . Similar to the Okushimo and others of that ilk with that unique leaves rool upward at edges very cool. This one is more open but not wimpy . It has beautiful shiny tiny leafs that keep a nice Kelly green in summer then turn the most outstanding yellow color in fall. Love it you won’t ever leave it.
A very interesting tree for those that like different cultivars .. the variegation is grey green on edges of leaves...leaves are long thin pointed almost like a bamboo leaf but a bit thicker,and reticulated .. occasionally a larger leaf will appear... It has an upright vase shape form which gives it a distinctive look at a distance . this is a truly unique tree great for any collection but is easy to grow for the beginner
This another really cool different tree . it is small and thick with very cool leaves that lobes turn under . It's leaf nodes are pointy and sharp and as Mr. Sun leafs looks like a child's sun drawing Hitode leafs looks like a star fish which it Japanese name means .. This is one of the best pumpkin orange fall color trees . the large Amoenum leaves offer good strong texture and size and is fast growing . This hardy tree takes well to shaping and pruning. It is now just becoming popular on the west coast ...it's popularity is long over due for the rest of us. It is a beefy hardy all around great yard tree.
From Korea via the Netherlands, this splendid cultivar is exceptionally vigorous and has outstanding and unusual shiny bronze pink spring color and spectacular yellow/gold in fall . It has large leaves and is a bold cultivar that gets really big ... this along with Hogyoku are great for those wanting a bigger JM, remember my size is for 10 years and all JMs grow slowly in most places. This tree is a bit more vigorous than most and is hardy and an all around great yard tree for those who like it BIG.
Another great hardy sun taking linearilobum . More of a tree than others ( less bushy) If you are looking for a good basic bamboo leaf type for most placements …this is it. Can take most any condition and is a very sturdy JM. Very pretty when backlit with sun. It is super hardy and very very pretty. I have one in my yard and I love it
Has a warty green trunk that is very different than most other rough barks .. not as showy but super cool and different .. the green bark on most of branches and some on trunk sets it apart from other rough bark trees like Arakawa. The leaves are jagged toothed with super cool fall coloration. This a must have for collectors and those that have other rough bark trees. .
This is the sister tree to Osakazuki ... but instead of red it is yellow/orange . Often planted together with Osakazuki..it makes a striking eye opening experience in fall . But it can be planted alone . Not a big tree it can be easily pruned to be places in smaller garden settings. It has large leaves like it's sister making the viewing experience glorious even from afar. This is a super great tree on it's own and with the added attraction of having it planted with it's sister tree making grand entrances grander

It's origin tree is located in Urbana / Champaign, IL, home of the "Fighting Illini". Beautiful tree. Should be able to take full sun and should be able to survive the southern portions of zone 5.
A smaller bloodgood type for that “just fits in” location . Grows slowly and unlikely to outgrow it’s space as many other JM’s do. Very hardy takes sun and wind . This is a great tree but not often available
A constantly color changing cultivar highly dependent on location … Leaves tend to be shiny which is cool, giving it a glistening tone at certain times during the season . The reds are very nice and the greens are tinged with gold/yellow. A nice upright small tree and has fast become a fav of mine.
I love this tree unfortunately like most every winter red or orange branched JM except Glowing Embers, these types of JMs hate cold and any wetness. Our area is warmer now and unless we get a prolonged period of -10 to -20 degrees this plant should do fine. And for folks st. Louis and southward This tree should do fine. The 4 stars are for northern growers BUT 5 stars for warmer areas. It is perhaps one of the prettiest trees i ever owned Til about 6 years ago we got such a prolonged cold spell.. It does great in heat, so that's no problem. its bark is more orange red and yellow /green so don't expect a red stem . I find this stem and trunk color much cooler and different .. it looks super cool summer and winter. If you can grow it ( warmer areas) get this one . It outshines all other red/orange winter branched cultivars by a wide margin!! zone 6
This is simply a stunning tree. I saw it out west full grown and said to myself WOW I must both have one and offer it to others. It is a truly a special medium sized red Matsumurae .Granted the name is lame but anyone looking for a great red hardy upright that grows fast and has great form a really thick tree has to have this one but limited quantities and hard to get!!!
A very pretty short upright with super cool leaves .. they are not the finely lobed leaves but are wider and more exceptional, similar to the hawthorn tree in leaf shape, double toothed and slightly divided. Tree is multi colored and outstanding. Does great in summer in full sun but a bit of shade is probably a good idea .. It is hardy although there are those that think zone 6 and warmer is best .. I have seen no problems with it .. Ideal for a small garden placement or a special corner that needs a bit of pizzazz.
This is a very nice cultivar with VERY prominent dark green veins in it's leaves throughout the growing season.. it a small tree with reticulated young leaves but as it matures during the season leaves are not so reticulated in fall the leaves are broader and very colorful . This is a great new smaller tree bordering on a dwarf...

Another vary cool variegated JM. A smaller wide tree with nice form . Some say this is the same as Shojo no mai some say Roseo-Marginatum which as I see it neither of these is the same. Leaves are nicely accented with color many with sickle shaped. Unlike the Butterfly this tree is not as twiggy and forms a more open rounded tree. It is a nice full tree with reliable variegation and cool leaves each a little different but highly variegated .. I like this one better than Butterfly but I like more open trees ... if you want a more compact upright then go Butterfly.
This is a particularly nice variegated tree with more re/ pink than others. It is a slow grower and does not get big . Purported to be a bit tender as many variegates are.. and does not like full sun also no surprise... Keep in a protected spot and you will not be sorry with is one
This JM has subtle variegation unlike many other gaudy ones that really seem almost out of place with out a clown car beside it .I personally prefer this type as I really don't want to show off;>) ..it is a sturdy hardy variegated JM of medium height. It is NOT a new introduction but rather discovered in Japan in 1882 now that's vintage . If you like variegated cultivars like I do but want a more subtle look and have a tree with heritage this one is for you
This is a very pretty smaller tree with gorgeous color .. I have been a bit reluctant carrying it because it is is an early budding JM and can get hit in early spring frost.. But with so many of my customers in more moderate areas I have decided to carry it since it is a phenomenal tree .. also can be easily containerized for more dicey areas. There is also a dwarf version of this cultivar. It is of the green branch JMs rather as opposed to to the red or orange branch cultivars .. It looks really cool in it's own right or can be planted with red/orange branched JMs to have a real all year round strikingly beauty.. I would say latitude for best results use St. Louis, Mo as a starting point although if in a micro climate near water this one will do well!!
As many of you know hime ( thats HE MAY NOT HI ME) means princess or in most cases a code word for small . This is a new tree that is a dwarf or at least dwarfish Katsura. I have no idea whether it will be a bit more hardy than it's older sister so I would use the basic Katsura guidelines as your mantra on this very special new intro... It is always nice to see a dwarf version of a much liked taller JM
One great Linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that keeps it's red color throughout the summer well ... great form and substance .. one of my favorites!! Can take sun or shade... it has stunning fall color and as you can see by the jpeg usually has lots of red seeds ( Samara ) that give it a spectacular look
A very sturdy hardy cultivar that forms a small/medium size nicely rounded tree. The green is very bright and stunning . The leaves are double serrated and almost like toothy snowflakes to me they are feathery if you like birds rather than winter . This tree does not like wet areas or a lot of sun , but for the right spot it is very different and cool. Many growers consider this their favorite JM

This tree grows upright then weeps thus giving it a flat'ish topped shape. The form is more vase shaped than many. Any weeping JM even semi weepers like this one should be of interest to collectors since so few exist. The leaves overlap in a cool irregular pattern. It is a different and very cool JM with great fall color and very sun hardy as well as winter hardy

A bushy tree when left untrimmed with subtle Fu ( sand dusted ) white variegation ..In summer has yellow white flecks and streaks on it’s leaves. Has very nice gold orange fall color and a slightly cascading form giving it a dense lacy look. This is a very nice semi dwarf with an attitude that shows.
This name literally means little snow flake. But some of the leaves are not so little .. it has a reticulated variegation and is VERY pretty smaller tree. The tree is known for it's season long very nice color, and like all light green leafed trees needs some shade
I acquired one of these trees a few years ago and really like it . I am a sucker for odd shaped leaved JM's and this one is odd. This new cultivar is just crazy in leaf shape . Another JM with leaves that curl inward like the Hippy Fin Mo and Okushimo but thicker and more substantial AND A DWARF!!. This one is Very pretty . Likes some shade . Everyone that walks by will ask about it’s unusual leaf shape. It seems like a more of an upright with short branch form great for tighter spaces where many dwarfs may be overwhelmed. If you like unusual leaf forms this one is for you and the only small dwarf I know of with this type of leaf
A newer selections with small star shaped very distinctive leaves. it is brilliant red/ orange in fall . This is a smaller tree but not a dwarf so it holds a special place in the JM kingdom. I think this tree is an up and comer .. I will plant one out myself this spring
A new cultivar I know little about..but looks to have a lot of potential. it has a great form and the lime green color of leaves sets it apart from most other JM's . I am particularly fond of light green and gold colored leafed JMs as they are in the minority of JM's and really add to any collection. this one is hardy.
I have always lusted after this tree since first acquiring a specimen and wanted badly to offer it to others especially in the north as an alternative to all those friggin' Bloodgoods!!. Now I have found them. This is probably one of the best red smaller to mid sized red upright JM I own. It does not lose its color in summer, is hardy, and takes some wetness. It seems to grow slowly at least up here. If you want a great red smaller upright... Lozita is for you.
There are two forms of this tree. Both are very nice and have great color. Can take sun well and have good form and substance and luminescence. Either is a winner in my book. I have planted out several and they are cold hardy and can take sun. It is a small sturdy tree with very pretty leaves with an open form and a season long pleasure with fabulous golden fall color. This is a fav of mine!!
That crazy Mama !!!…I think cooking pasta all day has messed with her brain her leaves grow like she's insane!!… This is simply a terrific tree with so many different shaped leaves it’s hard to keep up .But don’t trim …it’s not reverting just weirding out. This one is not for the automaton or suburban stereotype. But if you are slightly skewed like me it is a must have. It is a medium fast grower with nice form. Mine has stayed small but weathers heat and cold. Once established this tree is a great smaller tree for a special spot .. everyone that gets close enough to see the leaves will be astounded
This is a great small cultivar with purple green variegated leaves. It is a small tree which makes it plant-able in many spots .. the variegation is on all leaves not spotty like some .and the variegated color lasts from spring into summer. It is very different from Beni shi en in color but similar in shape . It looks really cool planted near Beni or in tandem
Upgrade your Bloodgood with this baby. It is similar but a definite improvement in color shape and form. It is not as bright as Fire Glow but similar in habit but more slender/narrow with larger leaves and upright form. I would call it the deep cousin of Fireglow or better yet "Red sky at night" ("sailor delight" ). It is a VERY nice tree for your yard and can with time get much bigger than Fireglow
This another new bloodgood type with bright pink new leaves in spring and shiny dark red in summer and great multicolored leaves in fall .. A somewhat fast grower that forms a medium sized broad sturdy hardy tree.this is a full and upright great yard tree
Another red cultivar i have been "a huntin' for". Well here it is .. It does NOT burn in sun at least up my way. It is super cold hardy. It is spectacularly red in spring and fall and holds some color through summer. This is one of my top 10 fav upright red JM's. it is suppose to get big but mine has been a slow grower. It may get big in JM preferred growing areas..but I don't see it happening here . The correct name is Masu NOT Musa ( Which is not Japanese ). Masu means "increased" in Japanese and Murasaki means purple thus intense red/ purple.
This is one of my favorite variegates .. it is upright and a bit less twiggy and more open than the similar Butterfly and has a bit more color than the similar Kagiri nishiki. it is also an older " Japanese variegate. Leaves tend to be of different shapes and sizes making it not as orderly as some of the aforementioned similar trees It's leaves and structure give a distinctive look . It also takes sun really well for a variegated tree. It's an all around keeper!!

This is a very different. JM with leaves are flat giving it a feathery look that while some hang down giving it a weeping look .. The spring color is a very pale yellow green, Has great fall color It's colors are very satisfying and is a strong growing smaller tree that is more broad than tall. It gives a very different look to your yard and many use as bonsai. overall this is one of the more unique JM's out there so what are you waiting for
This tree is super cool veined variegate with spectacular color and duper hardy.It has reticulated / variegated leaves that are long and slender . the variegation is pink over green and white with strong green veins. leaves are slender and long with downward turn giving the tree a slightly weeping look. VERY VERY cool!! This is one fine keeper.
A special tree with unusual coloring different from other uprights . This one can get large in JM friendly areas and is a handsome addition to any collection. It's leaves are heavily toothed with hooked teeth and green veins are conspicuously evident next to it's base seasonal color giving it a truly unusual look. this is an old historic Japanese tree ..the real thing. A vigorous hardy light green cultivar with an Anoenum leaf if you haven't noticed elsewhere on this site i personally am attracted to since they are large and hardy divided giving them more substance than most. I can't get enough of them . This is a very pretty tree. The fall color is very cool .. but throughout the season it shines
This is a very very cool red cultivar but has a brightness that rivals Fireglow but brighter.. there may be two trees with this name as some sources have it as a dark purple .. the ones I have are brighter and stunning to say the least.. It holds it's color the summer better than Bloodgood. I have this one planted out and it is spectacular and a fast grower. About 8' at ten years. Matsumurae Leaf shape.
This new cultivar seemed ordinary at first but really grew on me . It’s leaves have great substance and are large and very cool shape (see photo). .Fall color is a must see. Has a great open shape similar to a Japonicum. I have but a few left unfortunately since this is a particularly hardy very pretty tree that can take full sun

This is an uncommon tree with beautiful pointed narrow long leaves. this one is really unique and a must have It is hardy takes sun well and is striking in the the fall. This is a true older Japanese JM making it an original JM. The Japanese call it a crystal of snow. This is a VERY rare cultivar with a unique look that is seldom seen, and we have found to be very cool and most worthy of any collection
Looks in color a bit similar to the the Kinran but leaves are wider and it is MUCH thicker . It’s a very different and distinctive shaped tree that weeps with age . An outstanding cultivar in color and form leaves are of superb color throughout the season ending in a burst of brilliant red/orange… a keeper.
Wow I have finally found this tree. I love mine... it is among the hardiest cultivars I have. It is sturdy fast growing holds its red well in sun and heat. Why anyone would want a stinkin' Bloodgood over this is beyond me. And why this tree is not cultivated more and therefore more readily available is also beyond me. It is simply a truly great deep red larger upright JM that everyone having the space to plant it should have. It is an old Japanese cultivars from 1688. There are two types of these one being lighter red and one being dark red. Both are keepers but likely the darker red is the correct cultivar
Very pretty large not very divided leaves with a full upright form as wide as tall that differentiate this beautiful cultivar from many others . It is just exquisite. And with red/orange brilliant fall color you can't go wrong with this one. Named after the river Nanase.
Apricot colored leaves in spring with prominent veins. Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade. Styled like the Ghost series with reticulated veins. It is a wonderful mixture of colors with some green, but mainly light purple in summer.
I have this one growing in my yard and have really been taken with it . There is just something about this tree that is different .. I think it is the long toothy leaf nodes with a very dissected look along with great full season color and form that suites me well . I always look at this tree when passing and have to look at the plaque .. Its name is hard for me to remember. It is an older cultivar from the late 1900's. Fall color is spectacular; multi-color with distinct veins. It characteristically has plenty of red samara.
A very dark almost black red cultivar in spring becoming more red bronze in summer and a spectacular fall show of bright bright red. It is a smaller tree than a Bloodgood and much more colorful and most often produces lots of samara ( seeds). It is a medium sized upright red of great character and form. Similar to Nuresagi but with small leaves .. a spectacular specimen tree . There is also a dissectum Nigrum that is totally different
I have had this tree for years and NEVER seen it available til now . It is super super hardy has great color although some leaves are not variegated. It is a bit more variegated than Sagara nishiki and less subtle. the yellow is on the edge of the leaves in both cultivars . It grows to a nicely shaped shrub that does not get wide so it fits just about anywhere . I love mine and always show it off!! the more sun it gets the better the variegation but in hotter areas you have to shade it. The photo is in total shade so variegation by mid summer in shade is more white
This is one of the best rough bark JMs even more pronounced craggy bark than Arakawa, at three years the bark starts being rough; in older trees it is REALLY pronounced. Some folks liken this one to the bark on the Japanese black pine. The leaf form is super nice and can take full sun in many places. The colors in fall are some of the best I have seen. This JM, like the paper bark maples, gives year round enjoyment
Hot pink with deep green variegation develop on this tree after the new growth in spring appears as neon red. 'Noel' turns to green during late spring to early summer. Fall color is a bright fire engine red. Height might reach 10-12 ft in 15 years. 'Noel' was found as a variegated sport on 'Shin deshojo' by John' O'Brien in CT.
. It's brilliant color in spring and even more boffo in fall make this tree an all around winner. This is a superior re Jm in every aspect. Many think this is the same as Musashino but I find it to be smaller but with similar characteristics but holds color better in full sun..I don't see it as the same tree . Of all the trees I had in the intense full sun summer of 2012 . This tree did better than most all reds with very little leaf burn .. I highly recommend this super hardy very pretty upright cultivar.Name translates to "Wet heron"
Hyper cool red tree with great great color both red leaves and branches. This is a great red upright JM. This one should be a great yard JM or specimen that won’t overwhelm. VERY hard to get not often available each year .. it is one of the best reds available but an older cultivar it will green out in summer in shade . Predates Bloodgoods and has been passed by . I feel that is an injustice since this is a MUCH better tree than Bloodgood or Emperor one .. . I would carry it as a mainstay if it were ever available
I never gave this cultivar a second look until I got one and... WOW... it is so cool . The colors literally pop off the leaves into your eyes. It has good sun resistance up here . it is super hardy ... and has a shape to kill for. This is a truly outstanding larger cultivar in every respect and i feel privileged to own one.
This is a semi dwarf tree . it is a smaller much more compact version of Butterfly and it seems to be much more variegated. It will fit into about any location with some shade, as either a companion plant or a small specimen. It is truly spectacular variegation. Zone 6 tree.
The tiny curled leaves are hard to not like. This one is very different. This type of tree is for those individualists who don't just want another typical JM .
This one surprised me. It like sun just fine. Has really nice season long color larger leaves. A very nice yard tree with great subtle color in summer and strong color in fall. The leaf shape of all amoenum’s are broader and less dissected giving it a more substantial look. This tree really stands out.
This is a good sturdy cultivar with VERY pretty substantial leaves throughout the season .This is the cousin of the bright orange (fall) coloring Ichigoyoji. It is often planted with this orange cultivar giving two great fall coloring trees that compliment each other and the space they are planted in. This tree can get big in maple worthy places but here will likely be towards the smaller end of my specified size range.
Another Osakazuki cousin of the kissing variety. it is very similar to the others ... the plain and rubrum. Just different spring coloration . This tree is one everyone likes and I am happy to offer it in three varieties that all are different enough to stand alone as great trees worthy of owning.
This tree has very large leaves and a spectacular fall display that is truly eye catching. It forms a rather large tree in some areas but I expect it to be medium sized here even with some age. A truly superior traditional Japanese maple.
A very hardy reliable bright red open JM that does okay in sun but can take the cold also . it doesn't much like wet areas and tends to be a slow grower but is a nice medium to small red upright . I don't see it getting anywhere near 12' here in many many years but in friendlier confines it may get even bigger.
A very nicely sized and shaped tree , Not twiggy like some and not too tall or short …just right. Has lots of seasonal color a great all around JM.

I do not know the hardiness of this cultivar for northerner's .but in containers for northerner's and for anyone else this is a superior tree . Its pointy ruffled leaves are super cool. Coloration is phenomenal...and to top it off it is different not like any other cultivar I have seen. It's colors change constantly throughout the season and are highly dependent on where you put it but always gorgeous . Should be given afternoon shade as most JM do. For a smaller dwarf like tree of stunning looks that is unlike others this cultivar is a must have. The photos are from late summer in almost total shade so it is not colored up.
A Korean cultivar that has very long linearilobum/bamboo leaves .. It is very pretty and seems to be much less touchy than the Red pygmy .... holds it's red color well ,can take some sun and like most all linearilobums are super hardy . Basically everything ya want in a small tree It looks like a keeper
Another great Ghost . Great purple red spring and early summer color and holds some color through out the season . Has the same distorted leaf look as the amber ghost and the Aka shigitasu sawa and the Kasagi yama . This one and the Amber Ghost are truly special.
Beautiful dual colored leaves in spring. Fresh spring leaves have an amazing color to them. Variegation can differ from leaf to leaf. Deep Red / Pink in spring. Red / Pink in summer. Strong Red in Fall. About 8' x 4' in ten years. Variegation could unstable at older ages.
I find this to be a better and hardier and more colorful tree than the standard bearer Bloodgood from whence it likely came . This is a great all around red Palmatum for this area. It is a fast grower and can take many adverse conditions . I always suggest this one it is easy to grow.
This is one of many red Bamboo leaf specimens but one of the better smaller ones . Not "officially" a dwarf but could be considered such . These Linearilobum are among the hardiest of the palmatums and are easy to grow, takes more sun, wetness, and dryness than other palmatums .. I really like red cloud for a smaller bamboo leaf cultivar
This is a linearilobum that needs some shade. Seems fairly hardy and has yellow gold fall color most unusual and different than other red Linearilobums.Superior to Atrolineare, colds holds better and it sunburns less.

This is another Bloodgood type tree but smaller. The big difference is that the red on this tree is phenomenal ten times as bright and flashy as it's taller relative(s). It just absolutely glows in spring summer and fall ... This one needs a bit of shade and is hardy but is a slow grower , so it would go in almost any placement for that special tree.
This is a really nice variegated JM . It is sturdy and hardy and won't overwhelm a space. It is similar to the Nishiki gasame which has done exceptionally well for me and is a true crowd pleaser . This tree has the distinction of a bit more vibrant yellow variegation and larger leaves. This is one to be sure to get . Not to be repetitious but give it a bit of shade.
A really nice small red with medium size palmatum leaves. Bright red and can take lots of sun, very hardy, one of David's favorites! Approx 6' x 4' at ten years.
This is a truly outstanding tree .. there is some confusion whether this is the "actual original" Sanguineum.. But this is now what is available, albeit not readily available, in the trade. And the color matches the name whereas the one Vertrees describes DOES NOT!!! ..,. It is one of my top 10 fav trees winter hardy at least down to -17 below .. and is just season long gorgeous.

This is a very cool rounded leafed tree that has a great form . leaves come out yellow / green with red tips then turning green with red and then green and finally fall super red . If you like a round leaf JM like I do... this is one to get .. it is hardy and super cool.

This a Very hardy cultivar. it can take sun but does better in a bit of shade.It simply glows all summer. The fall red is just an afterthought and a good one at that. I love this tree . It does great here and is really different for those unaccustomed to the multi cultivared world of JM's .. I mention this cause it is so easy to grow if this were your first "different" JM you couldn't do much better.
This is a very nice larger Jm. It seems hardy can take some sun and it's fall color is amazing .. As with all oranges it is a shade of red/orange and is more orange the more sun it gets and the how the sun hits it. It grows fast grows new branches when any are damaged and is a real all around winner .. It is not orange all year round here but may be some places . but if you want a truly brilliant larger growing Jm this is a great new choice.
A nifty variegate that seems to have a loot of different shaped leaves on it differentiating it from other variegates .. It seems very small and dwarf like although not classified as such I am doing so.. Has a more open shape than other dwarfs hence the fact others don't classify it as such .A very interesting introduction worthy of a placement in any Japanese garden or other smaller space
A truly upright dissectum many have tried to duplicate and failed. It may be the only true upright dissectum in existance. It has great all season lacy look can take some sun and is very hardy. Grows fairly fast. This one is a winner.
This is like a non dwarf version of Mikawa yatsubusa, but still a smaller jm and a true Japanese cultivar. Overlapping flat leaves give this a very unique look. Name translation means blue green palace in the clouds. A very nice tree for a smaller space but will give a more substantial look than many dwarfs .
This is a nice hardy cultivar that also takes sun rather well. It has very small leaves that unlike other such JM's are also longer. The leaves tend to be bunched or on masses. The ends of the branches are flattened allowing growth to grow out of them in different directions . The actual look is quite pleasing. Translates to: "Petrified" "Cluster of Eight"

This is one of the prettier mid size JMs. It's spring color of bright pink is quite unusual . Add to that a Kaleidoscope of summer color with phenomenal bright fall red and you get a very, very nice cultivar . This cultivar seems both hardy and can take some sun . It seems to be a bit more upright and taller than the similar Shishio Improved ( Chishio Improved) It's a winner. Zone 6 tree.

A very nice very hardy tree that looks great all season . This one is special to me since it is one of the first ones I received . It has VERY nice leaf shape and it's tree form is desirable suitable for even smaller spaces . A very nice, ancient cultivar first mentioned in 1710. (Not to be confused with Shigirame.) Everyone loves it but it is a pretty rare find. I have grafted this one and we have several that I grafted in inventory for sale (2017).
A brand new high demand variegated cultivar from New Zealand. It resembles the Itame nishiki but with much more color especially in the red areas and a much larger more open form and larger leaves..also Geisha Gone Wild and other such variegates . This tree has shown to be very hardy and okay in some sun and a winner among those that spent big bucks to buy it early in it's USA introduction period . I now offer it in many sizes at down to earth prices. This tree does dull out in the summer .. but what JM doesn't in spring and fall it shines
A must have tree with bunches of branch-laden curly leaves that look like a lion's mane for which it is named. The name refers to the mane of a mythical female lioness of Japanese drama. It is hardy and can take some sun and a medium grower. It has been in cultivation since 1882. This is a tree you have to touch as you pass by just to see if those ruffled stiff leaves are real . A really cool tree with a different look ...for a smaller similar tree see 'Ojishi' which means 'lion' (male lion) which is even more compact than Shishigashira. A lioness is known as 'Mejishi'.
A great red hardy cultivar with Matsumurae leaves. Deeply colored almost black sets it apart from Shojo nomura which is a medium red. It holds color well with a bit of shade The leaves are slender and long but very symmetrical in a star pattern. It is NOT a dense tree and has an open look while branching more outward than up as it grows. It's name means red faced monkey or orangutan. Shojo is used to signify red.
This is a semi dwarf Shojo ... the Japanese words mean red princess. It is of super nice form and stays fairly columnar . A very cool dark that holds well the red season thru . This is not a broom, so no reversion or unforeseen changes over time and should be VERY hardy. Zone 6 tree.
This is another older super hardy red cultivar for northerners and others as well . It seems to take just about anything thrown at it. In the north it holds its color well in summer in south it greens out . It is of a smaller size than Bloodgood but of the same ilk for those that want a Bloodgood type tree but have space limitations.... and IMHO much cooler in every aspect than the overused Bloodgood.
This is my favorite of the Ghost series ghost. I simply love the toothy distorted leaves. This is truly a special tree and is so cool it is a must have. The leaves look like serrated knife edges, but don't worry it won't cut you. It's form and substance are unsurpassed.
This is a vigorous grower so give some protection in colder areas cause of late growth and tenderness. It is similar to other more dwarf JM’s like Royle with its small tightly clustered leaves. Supposedly a relative of the Bloodgood in smaller form …but doesn’t seem quite as hardy . VERY VERY pretty more so than the Bloodgood and a tree everyone should own even in a container if necessary.
White and pink (strawberry) ruffled leaves with extremely prominent dark green veins. Slow growing new cultivar for us. Height is unknown at this time.
This cultivar is very hardy for this area. It has a nice soft texture and is different from "Bloodgood" types . It's leaves are of Matsumurae style , meaning very divided all the way down to the base giving it its own style . that together with phenomenal color makes this one a winner.
This is a new cultivar with a golden summer color .. although it needs to be mid summer and hot to get it .. I am just guessing on size. It looks like a definite plus for those wanting a bit of different color in summer . This tree seems to be very unique
A new smaller SEMI dwarf bloodgood type .. very very nice It has been called Swat Margaret .. I hate that name and it does no justice to how nice a dwarf open upright red this is . Finding a truly open branched faster growing dwarf reds is special. a must have. This one is VERY hardy( -20) although I have placed it in -15 for safty purposes for this area and does descent in full sun HERE. This is a tree with "leaves gone wild". Not in an unruly way but masses and masses of them . They are almost Linearilobum in shape very long and slender.This tree is stunning all summer especially with a backdrop of sun.The tree has a narrow shape and upright and dense. And you'd be "dense" not to consider this one. Zone 6 tree.
This is a yard tree that can get big . I really like it’s shape and form. Leafs will green out in too much shade in summer like many other reds .Fall color is among the best in a JM I have seen. So maybe “The Cardinal” would have been a better name. A boffo tree for your front yard.

A broad, upright habit, even when young, supports the dense, green canopy of this JM from spring through summer. In fall, the foliage bursts into an unsurpassed show of brilliant colors that starts on the lower branches and advances up the tree. Gold appear first and changes to orange, then scarlet until all three colors on display at once. Finally, they all go completely scarlet. Spectacular!
This is a great columnar palmatum with yellow-green leaves. It is a very fast grower and can reach up to 20' over time. It is very cool with fabulous red fall coloration on a very columnar tree how cool is that!!!
A very nice older cultivar from the 1800's in Japan .. Very pretty thin translucent deeply divides and heavily toothed leaves distinguish this cultivar. and it's ability to grow larger than many other JMs. It's orange fall color is a real plus along with it's retaining a red blush /highlights thru most of summer.
In spring, the soft, pendant chartreuse leaves on this small, rounded tree sport dramatic edges of persimmon red, an effect that looks like many dainty leaf-hands with brightly painted "nails." In summer, the foliage continues to demand attention as it develops wide, deep red margins and light cream centers. In Zone 5 area, it is full sun. In Zone 7 areas it is partial shade. This is semi dwarf red cultivar. It seems to be another bloodgood offspring. It is very pretty and seems to be a bit brighter than it's cousin. It keeps its color well throughout the season. It is a thick column-shaped tree that will look perfect in place that needs a bit of filling but not too much.
This is an extremely hardy sturdy smaller tree. I really like it. It has taken my tree 4 years in the ground to get that 'floating cloud" look of heavy white variegation shown on other web sites . VERY nice and different. Leaves have a very distinctive look and this JM has GREAT form and character. Highly recommended for this area. Just patience is needed for full color of leaves .. your wait will be greatly rewarded!! To get maximum variegation don't fertilize with nitrogen and try to neutralize any nitro in soil. Zone 6 tree.
This is one of my favorite trees . Some say it is the same or similar to the Aoyagi. It forms as beautiful small tree with light green leaves and a brilliant fall gold color. The branches are similar to Glowing Embers in that they are yellow green and coral in winter. This combo of leaf and branch color make this hardy perfect replacement tree for those who hate Sango Kaku and have a dead one to prove it... but still would like to have some winter color so their tree has year round beauty.

Vic seems to get around. This small cultivar is bushy and thick. It will add substance to any smaller placement. The greens are of several different shades depending on age in spring and summer giving it a layered look.

A very hardy JM with nice color throughout the season making this a perfect JM for this area and has an additional plus .that it can take some sun. I have become fixated on this tree. Yes the name is cool, but the tree is unusually perfect for these parts and seems to thrive here. That being said it is really, really pretty in both color and form. A must have for this area, or just about any place else within JM growing zones.. But does NOT like wet areas plant high and dry

Deeply incised leaves in masses make this a truly neat plant I guess branches with leaves are kind of bird wing like . The yellow part of the “bird” name is subtle though so don’t expect something like Ueno homare. But this one is special in it’s own right

This is an unusually hardy red upright that has been a pleasant surprise . It can takes sun well but would prefer a bit of afternoon shade of course.It seems to hold it's color as well as any red and is nice from spring til fall. Although at first glance it seems like a typical red Palmatum , it is really nicer than most and I highly recommend it . It will REALLY grow on you and become one of your favs too.
If you are nervous about taking care of an expensive Palmatum or other such JM this one is for you … It has big fuzzy spring buds with hairy new leaves that pop out late, long after any freeze or late frost.. In summer it takes sun and wind well . In fall it holds its leaves late so you get an extended season . And in winter you get that great amber exfoliating bark like a birch but in “see through patches” back-lit by the winter sun… It has the best exfoliation of any tree equaling the River Birch And it exfoliates at a relatively early age. This is a PHENOMENAL tree all year round not just season long. This is simply a hardy stunning tree.

This is it... finally some specimens of super hardy Pseudosieboldianum. I have been very impressed by the ssp Takesimenses but have not known of it's hardiness which I am now testing .. That tree is just phenomenal nuf said . This cultivar in this species is hardy to zone 4 at least so anyone in northern area can feel comfortable growing it .. The trees i am getting both single and multi- stemmed so check it out northerners .. You have waited to plant out a Japanese maple and now you can. .

This is a super cool hardy Korean maple that looks like a traditional Japanese maple. It has fabulous Fall color. Highly recommended for northern growers who want a taste of far east. This has big leaves leaves and a nice, graceful form. Mine has taken -17 without any die-back and it is VERY VERY pretty .
This is a very cool acer rubrum with large leaves and looks somewhat similar to esk sunset .. A new introduction very cool and must have.. needs afternoon shade it will burn in full sun like all other variegated cultivars

This is very unusual silver maple. Usually I am not a fan of silver maples but this is a cut-leaf variety which is very cool, but must be planted in the right location. Fast growing and super cool. It looks like a Japanese maple upright dissectum.

I would put it with the best of the Shirasawanum, although some think this may be a cross between a Shirasawanum and a Palmatum ?? .. I have been trying to get it for years and have finally found a pipeline . If you're looking for a super hardy gorgeous tree for zone 5, look no further.. highly recommended. It is similar to Mr. Sun but with a broader leaf, a bit bigger, AND MORE UPRIGHT .. and more of a small tree than shrub. As I have grown this tree for a bit I think it is a very good one.

It is a truly unique tree that is exceptionally touchy when small 90% of those who go cheap on this one will not have it live I guarantee it .. when larger they seem to do fine. But even small ones for an experienced grower will do ok with the proper care and ideal conditions it will reward it’s grower with astounding beauty throughout the season but it's slow growth will make that penny wise pound foolish person wait 15 years in most non perfect Jm growing areas to enjoy it . For those who want to see it grow you wont see much from year to year . . Best keep smaller ones in a container in mostly shade (dappled shade best) with a good drainage medium and watch the watering and the sun. Delicate, finicky, touchy, a tree with an attitude ( my way or the highway) are just some terms and expressions that fit it well. But for those with experience with JM’s or that like a challenge …go for it cause if you are successful it is well worth it.. Or just buy a larger one.

information to the Contact Form.This is a great improvement on the above “Aureum” (Golden Full Moon) JM but don't be confused it is not a bright green like the Aureum . It takes sun and adverse conditions better . It is a truly beautiful tree . I still would not recommend it for beginners but ok for a novice . It is a slow grower and will not get too big . The colors are really nice throughout the growing season .This is a hardy cultivar for colder areas. Makes a real beautiful Jm that will always beg another look.can take some sun too which sets it apart from Aureum which will fry in almost any sun
This is a newer A.s. super hardy variety that has just fabulous form and stature and very pretty leaves .. it color throughout the season is simply phenomenal .. the more I watch this one the more I love it .. a good choice for those northern Jmstrs and southern ones too ..
As it name implies this is a smaller more compact hardy cultivar that has smaller leaves unlike many Shirasawanum that have larger ones. It can fit just about anywhere...but assumes the hardiness of it's brother and sister Shira's. Likes well drained soil and a bit of shade.
A very nice tree that is a cross between a Palmatum and a Shirasawasum. Has very subtle colors of green and red mixed . Leaves are a bit thicker than most …likes a bit of shade. It should be a very hardy cultivar since all shirasawasum's ( it's 1/2) are extremely hardy.
This is a newer Shirasawanum with super pretty yellow gold green leaves that can take much more sun and heat than many of it's brethren .. It also being an A.s. is super hardy. It is also a smaller tree that can fit anywhere but upright , not a bush . It shines in fall with golden hues. If you put this in too much shade it will be green but a very pretty green but partial shade to sun will keep it's color glowing. this is one of the best new A.s hardy JM's. It also has cool vertical striped bark on branches and trunk that is subtle but cool
A newer selection with a very upright shape but horizontal leaf branch structure . Looks to be a real keeper . This is a short tree that can fit anywhere and hardy and colorful as all Japonicum are. It also seems to seed well and are orange /red samaras .. clusters of seeds in late summer making that a extra plus. Translated to "A kind of Kimono"
Another smaller really cool Japonicum with smaller leaves and great Stout form. Seems to be a slow grower but very very pretty and extremely hardy.. A good dependable not to picky tree for a smaller spot. I have had one in my front yard for years and is a slow grower in mostly shade should be faster with more sun . This one is put forth as both a Shirasawanum and Japonicum over the years. It has gone back and forth for years .. when I first wrote this it had changed to Shirasawanum .. but now considered a Japonicum .. but whatever it is a great tree everyone likes it and it is easy to grow and hardy and of great form.
This is a smaller interesting A.s. with very cool leaves and unusual branching structure ... There is some disagreement on size but that may be from it's slow growing nature . I have gone with the most current info that it is a smaller tree and mine seem to be slow growers and be small so that seems to be born out. The leaves are darker green on top and lighter on bottom and very differently shaped than other A.s. cultivars. This one puts on a spectacular fall display and holds it's leaves and color late into the fall... This is a good smaller super hardy tree to own and love
I have this tree planted out and it is truly hardy . It isn't moisture sensitive (BUT always best planted in well drained areas). It is also very very pretty and a fav of mine . It seems to take sun well for it's species. The colors are VERY nice all season and it is a very fast grower.. This is a good substitute for the A.s Aureum or easier to grow A.s. Autumn Moon . It is a very "I can take care of myself" tree that even a brown thumb should be able to easily grow. If you like Aureum but are a novice or don't have time to baby your JMs this is a great substitute .. It is one of my current top ten cultivars although hard to get I have some on hand most times .. as all shirasawanum it grows slowly and is a small tree so buying a larger one is a good idea when larger ones are available
This is very different from most Shirasawanum. it does have
many fingers like others but they are pointed and curved inwards leaf .Not too skinny , not too fat....just right. It was named because it resembled a child's drawing of the sun. It is similar to Holland 6910 but a slimmer leaf that is a bit smaller and pointed ...it is super cool and has become a fav of mine .. very very pretty can take some sun but burns in full sun by mid summer and is super hardy... colors are a season long delight
A very choice medium sized Shira .. with great color All season but outstanding in fall . Some folks say this is a Sieboldianum but I agree with Vertrees it is a Shirasawanum. It is one of the best of the best ...Very hardy as well as gorgeous. A must have!!!
This one is a keeper . A really sturdy hardy tree that can take about any bad situation .and survive …but give it a good situation and it will thrive . It is a relatively fast grower hardy and beautiful in form and color . This one comes Highly recommended by yours truly!!.
A great newer Shirasawanum with large leaves that takes sun and wind and cold just fine. Great fall color …it shines like a red sunset in the late fall evening. It is Considered a “red” Full Moon Maple and seems to be a tree that adapts to conditions in an easy manner. It has a reddish glow all summer but is brilliant in spring and fall, a real winner in my book
This a brand new cultivar patent pending and discovered by one of the most astute JM master's in the world so it is a must have . Getting one of these is getting your hand on something very special with deep blue-green leaves in the summer. This one is cool and colorful in all seasons not just shades green, as with many other Shiras, until the fall.
This tree has great seasonal color and the small pointed fan shaped leaves like none you have seen. It is an outstanding cultivar in every sense. I fell in love with this one within days of getting my first one. It’s a beaut. ( not to be confused by the A.p. Sensu)
Color and form at it's best . A really hardy sturdy colorful tree can take some sun and wind . This one is a winner all around .. it basically has everything in a red hardiness , sun worthiness ... gorgeous color, and the dad-gum prettiest leaf you will ever see..and will do well for you.... it may be a hybrid Palmatum /Shirasawanum .. but it is the only red Shirasawenum that stays red all summer .. it is gorgeous and can get big in maple friendly areas.
This is for the northern collectors of JM's . It is a zone 4 tree. It has interesting leaves with tiny hairs on them .. the stalks also have these hairs. the leaf structure gives it a pleated appearance. the fall color is a dramatic show of spectacular reds yellows and oranges. It forms a medium size tree that grows slowly up north. it is a very study hardy cultivar

An outstanding hardy Maple with three separate leaves on each stem. Green leaves in spring and summer, with excellent orange or yellow fall color even in shade. Leaf shape is unusual, interesting and VERY nice. Winter shows off its exfoliating bark similar to Acer griseum only more textural. This tree can get 20 ft tall.
