This is a super cool must have true dwarf trident maple . It grows super slow and is VERY rare. It is so so cool you must have one. I have had no problems with this cultivar and it is a true dwarf not dwarfish. seems to be well in sun "here".A really neat super small very slow growing Dwarf Acer .. This is a must
have for any collection especially as a dwarf and a color that is most
unusual with a shiny top side and a leathery underside . this is a dwarf
Trident maple with a triangular shaped leaf . Originally native to
parts of China it has become very well adapted to Japan and is
considered a Japanese Maple. This should make an excellent bonsai
specimen.. This is not just a "dwarf" it is a TRUE DWARF!!
A very nice variegated cultivar a very good dwarf very pretty and can take some sun. It has shrub form with unique leaf lobes .. I really like this tree. This is an Acer campestre, also known as a Hedge maple or a Field maple.
A palmatum type leaf and a strong fall and spring color make this an exciting plant to grow but is best in zone 6 and higher. This is an Acer campestre, also known as a Hedge maple or a Field maple.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 4 - Down to -30°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Upright
Leaf Size: Medium
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A very nice deep red that holds well into summer takes full sun but as always a bit of afternoon shade will help it from any burn. Fall color is very nice .. a good all around hardy, pretty maple. called a vine maple
A great hardy dwarf acer that has a bit bigger leaves than most dwarfs but forms a compact small shrub perfect for your Japanese garden or smaller garden setting very pretty copper colored leaves and very nice fall color A winner for the smaller garden or those with limited space
A relatively rare cultivar, this looks like a winner. It has strong fall color and stays small although somewhat wide. It has a great form and neat leaf look .. I look forward to growing it
A very cool dwarf from Canada small circular leaves with very little division make this dwarf very special .. nice colors also separate it from the pact great for the small gardens
I very cool vine maple with a highly dissected type leaf looks like a acontifolium /palmatum dissectum combo .. very pretty bushy shrub super cool IMHO .. a must have
A multi trunk tree with yellow red brilliant fall color and red bark in fall and winter .. Bark is colored throughout the season but more yellow red in spring and summer. This is a stunning tree is not as hardy as though and should do better in southern areas with a lot of shade.. This tree is thought to be better in not so humid areas. it can take full sun but I tried that with little success in a more northern location and in extreme heat will burn like most other JMs. This is just now becoming one of the hottest hard to get JMs and when you get one you will know why ... its a must have for those with the right conditions
A good plant for those wanting a non bushy tighter tree.. nice green tones spring and summer good strong yellow in fall great for tight spaces with it's stubby branches
A really nice new introduction that is a sister of the popular Sunglow cultivar .. has apricot spring foliage with great yellow orange fall color .. It is a dwarf but gets a big bigger than most .. bushy form makes it a great tree to put around your hose as a bush with actual character...not the crap often seen by most of the non-knowledgeable landscapers or do it your self Lowe's addicts with no taste
This is between a Acer palmatum and Acer circinatum. It has disc shaped leaves and cool purple stems. This tree has superior fall color. The name in German means autumn fire. It is very vigorous and upright with really cool larger leaves which sets it apart from most other JMs as well as wide branching for those that like a nice full colorful tree. This one has outstanding fall color and very nice all season look. This is actually a circinatum- palmatum hybrid with stunning fall color . It becomes a fairly large tree and is a vigorous grower. Pink short stems on new growth is a great plus. leaves are very pretty and toothy .. a very cool tree.
This is an unusual weeping snake bark maple with variegated leaves ... strikingly colorful with winter bark interest. Snake bark maples have white vertical stripes
A Hawthorne variegated maple with super cool colors all season long .. many say zone 6 on this one but I think zone 5b ok .. the color on this tree is spectacular all season .. all leaves are not variegated but the neat thing is that most are and many have different variegation with different color patterns again super cool. Zone 6 tree.
A smaller very nice often multi stem acer for yards that don't need large street trees... Great color all season especially in fall nice grey bark. Zone 6.
If you are nervous about taking care of an expensive Palmatum or other such JM this one is for you … It has big fuzzy spring buds with hairy new leaves that pop out late, long after any freeze or late frost.. In summer it takes sun and wind well . In fall it holds its leaves late so you get an extended season . And in winter you get that great amber exfoliating bark like a birch but in “see through patches” back-lit by the winter sun… It has the best exfoliation of any tree equaling the River Birch And it exfoliates at a relatively early age. This is a PHENOMENAL tree all year round not just season long. This is simply a hardy stunning tree.
This is one of the best new hybrid trees for northern areas. It has year round exfoliating bark although not as pronounced as Griseum.. and is sun and cold hardy ... and best yet has the best fall red colors of any tree in our nursery .. If you live north this is a must haveThis super cool tree has exfoliating bark in winter and spectacular fall color .. it's exfoliation is not as striking as a pure griseum but leaf shape and color is MUCH nicer, lose some winter appeal but really gain big time the rest of the year a great trade off if ya ask me since how often do ya go in your yard in winter?? And much hardier than the pure paper bark maple, A hybrid between a griseum ( paper back maple and a sugar maple) zone 4 This cultivar is no "flake".This is a hardier cultivar than the more common Griseum but exfoliation is a bit more subtle and takes quite a while to show up but the wait is worth it. A super brilliant fall show of color awaits you .. It was among the brightest fall color specimens we had in 2012

information to the Contact Form. This is a new fabulous Japonicum cultivar . It has highly dissected leaves and weeps like a dissectum (laceleaf) where other Japonicum do not and it stays small . this is a winner in my book very different hardy new cultivar.. A good choice for the smaller gardens or combination plantings.

information to the Contact Form.Large leaves with great fall color and some sun resistance makes this a showcase tree. A must have. But I would give it a bit of protection although it can take some sun and wind. This is a spectacular hardy tree that does not get too big around here !!Originally known as Maiku jaku, translated to Dancing Peacock. Leaves will persist lending to long term fall colors.

information to the Contact Form. This looks like a keeper very nice color and form It has a strong weeping form stays medium small and has very dissected leaves for a japonicum ten times that of others except maybe Fairy Lights but much more vigorous..oh yeah and great fall color .. What else could you want in a smaller super hardy JM. It has become one of my new top ten trees. especially larger specimens are boffoTranslates to: Green Spreading

information to the Contact Form. This is a smaller more shrub like version of the Aconitifolium but with slightly larger leaves . With a pedigree like that ya can't go wrong with this one ... A great addition to your Japonicum collection.
I always recommend getting any Japonicum you can get you paws on... they are all fantastic . But you should be double darn sure to get any and all dissected ones ... like the great A.j's Green Casacade, Oregon Fern or Fairy Lights . All are similar in certain respects but if you look they are very different . This dissected Japonicum is short , flat, and spreading .it is MORE dissected as green cascade. Dissectum Japonicum is a perfect companion tree to plant with or around other upright JM's
This is another of Ed Woods selections, Large leaf form of Aconitifolium . It is a boffo Japonicum with very large leaves, I think larger than Vitifolium the largest of the large until now and cool spring as well as stunning fall colors... a fairly fast grower( faster than many Japonicum's) and just simply stunning in form and stature.Has HUGE leaves, If you want a REALLY BIG leaf cultivar that has boffo fall color this one is for youThis is a new plant for me but all the woods are very superior cultivars. It is a form of Aconitifolium All have the MO ( motis operand i) of having VERY VERY large leaves with stunning color .. I am sure this will be a keeper for you. SUPER LARGE LEAVES
This unique cultivar is similar to the Green Cascade but smaller and in my opinion more colorful in fall. It simply glows in that autumn light and holds that color for a nice period of time . During the rest of the season it is quite beautiful in every respect . It has become a favorite of mine in very short time. This one is a must haveNot technically a dwarf but stays very short. It originated as a seedling from Acontifolium
This is a new large leaf japonicum cultivar it is a sturdy super large leaf beauty... and has great fall color. It is a definite keeper for those who really like the larger leaf like the vitifolium, Ed Woods #1 and a few other japonicum. You get your monies worth with these trees as they really show in fall even when young very coolProfuse burgundy flowers and seeds.
Want a hardy dissectum type that is not a palmatum that will grow anywhere and you never have to worry about late freezes and frosts damaging it. Then this Japonicum is for YOU...never worry about this one succumbing to a late frost ... it's all around color is great and can take some sun and wind . In fall it’s a knockout. It does get big though and is a fast grower. This is among the best most reliable weeping Japonicum and very easy to grow!! It gets wider than tall. so not for skinny sittingIt is a seeding from an Acontifolium
This is an outstanding Acer japonicum that is a finely cut dissectum with great colors in both spring and fall . It is a good weeper with mounding twirling curvy habit . a real looker .. very niceNew growth will appear pink. Zone 6.
This is a very nice Japonicum that stays relatively small but has large leaves and great color throughout the season. The fall color is spectacular and it grows in shade or sun .. it is a truly special tree.
A Very vigorous growing medium sized super hardy JM that has stunning fall color. You can't go wrong with this one in northern areas but it does need a bit of shade the more south you live the more shade it will need. As With most japonicum it does well as an understory tree. The name Meigetsu translates to "Harvest Moon.
A really open habit tree with large leaves and lots of showy flowers. It is a slow grower that is delightful as many other Japonicums but a bit more rounded shape . An ideal tree for many placements. Can take a bit of sun and wind and is hardy.
This is suppose to be a big tree but I've never seen it over 5 feet tall. It seems to be a slow grower to me at least here. So I would feel comfortable planting it in many sittings unless you are about 20 years old now and plan on living where you’re at for a long time. I do so love this tree. All season long it never fails to please. And in fall it’s a knockout. This is a must have for any JM’ster. But take care with the water it doesn’t like wet feet.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Large
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A boffo narrow upright tree with rounded large toothy leaves and phenomenal fall color. Prominent flowers are also a big part of the charm of this rare cultivar. It is a bit smaller than other A.j.’s and a great tree for the yard in a special place .Can take sun wind and cold. ( not to be confused by the A.p. Beni otake)Feathery edged, deeply toothed leaves.
Rising Sun has uncommonly large, heavily textured leaves, up to 8" across, giving the tree a tropical look. Its vigorous, multi-branched habit produces sturdy limbs and rigid twigs, and the autumn show of red, yellow, and orange will take your breath away.
A new Japonicum that has great potential . The least of which it adds another VERY hardy cultivar to your list of super safe JMs for colder climates. My one year experience with this tree is very very positive it is super cool and a keeper . the photo was in early fall the red is very nice in late fall and it hold a nice long time .. This should be on your list.Whether this is a japonicum or shirasawanum has not yet been decided. Is this Ruby or Ruby Red. Time will tell.
This is a small version of the vitifolium with different less dissected leaves. It makes a great small tree and shrub with class and eye catching fall color. Leaf size and shape will get ya lots of "what the heck is this beautiful tree".
This unique cultivar has huge leaves that look like grape leaves …"Vitis" is the grape genus. It has stiff branches and leaves with little dissection giving it a lot of substance and good texture, The basic color is a good deep green , but the fall color is one of the best with spectacular combo of red ,orange, yellow. This is a quite unusual tree that is hardy and ok in some sun but will do better with a little afternoon shade.

information to the Contact Form.An extremely pretty Dwarf that is thick and classy. Leaves are really of special colors and growth is vigorous. Plant will get of some size, it is not a mini, but perfect for most small spaces. Has a somewhat upright but bushy habit and is hardy. It will take some sun but keep it limited. I would put this into the category of “different” and special. This JM would also make a perfect container specimen which would allow for closer observation. This is one of my favorite dwarfs and I have found it to be a very easy tree to grow unlike what is stated elsewhere. It takes a couple years to establish but then you are have a very special tree that is gorgeous in form and color.

information to the Contact Form.A very nice Katsura type tree...but BETTER, more colorful in every season and in every way. I have found this tree to be hardy, takes sun well but part shade best and does not bud early like Katsura .. This is considered a semi dwarf But I see it as a true dwarf so it should fit nicely in many installations...Spring color is as nice as Orange dream and stays very nice throughout the season greening out just a bit.. This is on my most fave new tree listZone 6 tree, but some claim to grow in Zone 5, be wary and keep an eye on yours if you try it.

Musashino is one of my all time favorite larger JMs which is super hardy, beefy and gorgeous. This one has different tones of red . If you are looking for a larger JM this is it!! This hottest past summer proved that this plant can take full sun and heat well did better than 90% other JMs it seems a bit smaller than Musashino but it is a true winner in hardiness category for hot summers while good cold hardiness .. its a keeper!!Translates to: Beautiful Dawn.

This tree has a ghost like look to it in the spring. Supposed to go green with darker shadings in the summer and the fall color is yellow to red. Height estimates are hard to come by. A red version with this given id can go over twelve feet in ten years, but the green version is more prone to be over six feet in ten years. . We have the green version available in limited quantities in 2019.
When i first saw listings for the "Ghost" series I thought they had "over ghosted" the name....Ghost this Ghost that . And really many are alike but about 4 ( including this one )are truly cool and worthy of owning . All selected seedlings of either Aka Shigitasu sawa or just plain Shigitasu sawa... they offer a unique oddity to any JM collection . This tree is a very cool smaller variegated cultivar very worthy of your ownership. This could be in the dwarf section but I would classify it as semi dwarf.
A very fine laced red Dissectum with unusual curly leaves giving it a really different look. Both colorful and Eye catching . Allegedly tender but worth keeping in a container. If you like to “baby” your “special” plants in a motherly way …this one is for you. Probably not for a beginner even if it's beauty is overwhelmingly tempting. I really love this dissectum but it is very finicky. Zone 6 tree but needs a protected area. First Dissectum Witches Broom discovered.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 6 - Down to -10°

Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This one has a totally different look than the baby lace and should not be confused with it , and is much more rare. Thicker, longer leaves that don’t seem to curl , outstanding form and a bit larger in every respect. It is super hardy and easy to grow and a fast grower. It spreads more than some and stays relatively short . . This one I really like and have had planted for several years with no problems.
A very, nice dissectum that changes throughout the season. Should be kept in a dryer location does not like wet feet but other than that a very nice selectionMulti-color appearance due to new growth mixing with mature growth.

A really nice dissectum. Similar to Ornatum but looks much nicer .. It has a gold fall color which is always a welcome addition to any dissectum collection. t is hardy and very pretty. This is a very nice fall gold Dissectum with bright pinkish red spring color and has red stems near the leaves giving nice summer contrast.. It seems to stay fairly low if not staked. A very nice cultivar. This is a very nice fall gold Dissectum with bright pinkish red spring color and has red stems near the leaves giving nice summer contrast.. This is a delightful small rounded tree similar to the Beni komachi but a bit easier to grow. It has nice fall color but is exceptional like the Coralinum in spring . . For those wanting an exception color in their tree and a small rounded size for that nook or smaller yard this tree is perfect.PS the jpeg is summer I will try to get a spring/fall one ... but very pretty in summer I think very nice leaf shape. This is a killer smaller slow growing tree similar to Kinran one of my fav trees .. Has very pretty frilly leaves for an upright Jm is great for containers or smaller garden settings .. has great all season beautySuitable for a container
This is a very nice smaller JM that has shiny red spring leaves and new red branching very tight upright smaller tree that gets 3-4 ft wide. The individual leaves look like feathers narrow and serrated but not deeply and clustered giving it a unique look like a dwarf but a med sized tree with time. Remember the size I quote is for 10 years in a non perfect JM growing area. All around a very cool cultivar
A very cool dwarf that many use in containers . it has VERY VERY small leaves . Tends to be a bit tender when young and likes more sun and an open area not a good understudy tree. It should do great Bonsai. This is not a tree for colder areas except in a container but a worthy addition to any collection.. very vivid reds. pronounced " He May " NOT HI ME.. Smallest red leaf dwarf.
(Also known as Ruby Star)This is a very pretty dwarf with very nice shade of bright red in spring and red yellow orange in fall It gets flushes of bright red leaves in summer if not oppressively hot.. leaves are small and somewhat serrated and pointed (star like) .. very cool dwarf
This one is fast becoming a fav of mine. Delicate looking but substantial leaves. Really nice bright red colors and flushes in summer and early fall. A hardy beauty that seems to be much smaller than most others have it described.Translates to Red Mirror
This is a better red branched variety than most others and one I would recommend for all BUT northern areas ( I really have found all bright red branched trees do not do well in the north although some of the orange branched ones like Glowing Embers seem to do well). It has a very nice shape and the leaves are really pretty all season So if you like red branches for winter color and great leaf color in spring summer and fall this is a good choice for a smaller nicely shaped tree... That will fit most spaces needing color all season.More hardy than a Sango Kaku
This one is a fav of mine VERY cool bright red flushes of small shiny leaf bunches throughout the summer . It is a fast grower and very colorful all season .It is hardy and can take some sun . Needs to be trimmed of any reversion but that is easily done . This JM is a keeper Some may not consider this a dwarf but I do the colors are spectacular but likes a bit of shade . VERY HARDY in winter.. I have grown this one for years and even in the coldest of winter this one does great with minimal die back. This tree is a Zone 6, but can do Zone 5B with proper location. Semi dwarf, choice cultivar, difficult to propogate. Leaves are long, narrow lobed with irregularly toothed margins. Translates to Beautiful red-haired little girl.
A new very small leaf bright red cultivar very very cool looks like a good bonsai tree .. it will take a little care like any smaller leafed lightly branched cultivar.but should do fine for more experience growers.. This one is very popular amongst enthusiasts and I can see why... it is very different and very cool... I have had some trouble with this cultivar so buyer beware ..It is not aggressive and in smaller trees you don't have much branching so if you get hit with a very hot summer you are in trouble .. probably best kept in container and only bought as a larger tree . unfortunately larger specimens do not exist . A very finely dissected leaf that is always attempted to be outdone for no good reason with new cultivars. This one is very hardy for me ...grows more out than up . It was discovered in Oregon. It name means Red Spider Web and also known by that name ( same cultivar) . It is very similar in fineness of leaf dissection as Red Filigree Lace but grows more horizontal. This is a hard to find tree but is one of my most favorite dissectums.. stays small and broadens out VERY HARDYIdeal for a small garden, rock garden, or patio garden.
This cultivar has just outstanding spring color and stays nice throughout the season. It is VERY hardy and forms an upright tree of medium size . It seems like a fairly fast grower … This is a highly recommended JM for those that want a different red from the usual ones.Amazing red on new growth in spring. Translates to Red-haired dancing girl
Although most think of this as a dwarf I do it is short and wide .. VERY nice compact bushy shrub like Jm as wide as tall... nice color throughout the season ... Translates to Red-haired daughter
A great bamboo leaved red Jm but give a little shade. It is VERY hardy and great for this area . I always recommend this one for around here. It is a tried and proven hardy tree of medium size … It won’t overgrow it’s area, .and has nice upright form. would prefer some mid day shadeTranslates to Big Red Bamboo
This tree has almost linearilobum type leaves that are deeply cut. The colors range from stunning to subtle throughout the season. It seems to be a slow grower and will stay small for a while . This tree has a really cool look from afar and close up and will be sure to please you all summer long . A bit of shade will help it as with all variegates. In spring, the leaves are purple with green edges.
Similar to the Butterfly but much more color especially pink in spring and summer and more orange in fall . If you like Butterfly as i do this is a must have and a more interesting tree IMHO than butterfly.. It is not as subtle so i recommend it as one the is different enough to have in addition to Butterfly...or as a stand alone. Both these trees are truly different than any other JM's. Both seem very hardy. Pink/Orange can be found within the white in spring and summer. Other spellings of Beni schichihenge are known to be used.
This is a very very cool reticulated leaf variegate with outstanding habit ... small in stature it may be considered a dwarf. it has fabulous red and pink tones as well as yellow and green in spring thru early summer . This is considered a red version of the standard Shigatatsu sawa very cool. gets as wide as tall.
This tree has small sharp pointed leaves of great color with green veins and super cool color in small shiny leaves. It becomes a bush form with age cascading in a very unique way . It's growth is vigorous. This is a great tree for small gardens and other intimate settings.. it becomes as wide as it is tall.Peach to yellow-red in spring.
This is a great Japanese import..not from this country or other Japanese wannabee countries . It has very nice color and is a good companion for those that want an orange fall color tree to go with their red ones. Any dissectum that has orange /red fall color is the exception rather than the rule and should be seen as a great opportunity to extend your variety of colors therefore a must have. It has one of the nicest form of as any dissectum I grow period .. super cool stature as seen in the jpeg of a smaller one
This one looks to be special . Very hardy as well as finely leaved. It can take some sun and stays small …has great color throughout the season …what more could ya want “Don’t mess with the Gohan” ( zohan) it’s a keeper. I have grown several of these and still consider the best of the small linearilobun ( bamboo leaf ). Likes and does well in shade and stays even smaller but can take some sun .. holds color in shade which is always a plusAlso spelled as Beni ubi gohan
A super hardy green dissectum that is the opposite of most. Starts out yellow/green and turns more red throughout the season with a nice red glow in fall. You can't go wrong with this dissectum. In this area it takes sun and cold well and is truly unique!!! A must have. I wish I had a good way of getting these but they are extremely rare!! I love this cultivar.
This a very good dwarf for those that want a wider spreading not tall dwarf . I have found this one to be very nice and reliable hardy and an transgressive grower. If you are looking for a vigorous wider growing small height very pretty dwarf this one is for you I really like it
A new promising dissectum ...This one is a nice red throughout the summer with little if any greening and takes some sun well...It seems more upright than most that is always a plus for those that don't want huge weepers taking over an area over time. This one like a keeper. The ones I have watched grow here are super nice.More upright than other dissectums.Originated at the Bewley's Nursery in the Blue Mountains of Australia
A very nice smaller color bark tree with great yellow/red branching in winter . I would consider it a semi dwarf The leaves on this tree are very small which is always a plus for an upright tree making this one special. A perfect accent tree with great winter color... much better than Sango and more manageable for smaller area. I put this in the dwarf section because it is dwarf like but a smite bit larger.Introduced into Europe from Japan in France.Name means Beautiful Mountain Range
Seedling from Amber Ghost introduced by Buchholz. It has yellow-green leaves with darker veins. 8'x5' in 10 years. An upright tree that develops a broad canopy over the years.
A very nice terrific looking hardy green JM with just a good sturdy form with pretty leaf . It is a thicker not wimpy JM which can be placed in the open and still have substance ... If you are looking for a very nice very pretty JM this is it ..Introduced by Buchholz Nursery.Heavy seed producer.
This is a fantastic tree I have it in full sun and does fine but a bit of noon shade would help . the colors are red all season and in fall orange red. I have seen this listed as a separate plant or another name for Seigai . I think it is not Seigai but similar ... The leaf form and color do not match up . this tree is a great one for smaller spots where you want a traditional upright red JM with a very different look from the dreaded Bloodgood. It is a slow grower and super cool won't outgrow it's space.
The yellow / green spring and Green summer leaves are outstanding on this cultivar accented by red flowers and samaras ( seeds) Giving a truly striking look to this larger fast growing hardy tree
A beautiful horizontally growing dwarf with great seasonal color. If you look at it from a distance it looks like a dissectum .. But upon closer perspective it has very pretty rounder( stouter) dwarf leaves not the pointy smaller ones found on so many other dwarfs .. this a a really nice dwarf tree. The description I got from others is not what I have found . it is more upright and full SUPER nice a really good dwarf that has a lot of substance .. Maybe they had topped theirs ??? but mine are super full and 4 ft. not rounded.. I think this is a superior choice dwarf
A very nice dwarf JM similar to Shaina but not quite as touchy .. very special nice red a bit darker than Shaina . takes sun well... this one is VERY pretty, but not for a novice grower.
This tree has always been hard to find anywhere but this JM has always “intrigued” me and has definitely lived up to that notion. It is simply VERY VERY pretty and seems to be a bit more upright but twines and weaves in a very unusual manner… It is a fast grower with flushes of red that are really eye catching. After several years of growing this I highly recommend it !!
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
Another great Dissectum from Australia. And one the has been around for quite a while ... it stays bronze all summer thus its name... it is a very bright yellow / gold in fall .. as said in other places on this site never pass up either orange or yellow fall colored tree especially dissectums they are definitely in the minority and round out any collection and go well with other red JMs. This is also a vigorous grower that I have become very fond of. It is not, at least around here, a fast or big grower.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A really cool nicely shaped tree full with larger leaves . As the name stated it's bright red seeds held way into the summer and fall against it's summer green leaf color is eye catching and very pretty . This is a very very nice sturdy mid sized tree. Does great in full shade or mostly sun. VERY study and has become a fav of mine unfortunately not always available. and usually just in larger sizes. I have one in an area where I sit to relax daily sometimes in my hammock and have grown to really love it. In a shady area like mine it tends to be more shrub like growing more outwards than up. Even if it greens out the seeds stay red throughout the season
This a newer American cultivar that is super cool highly divided leaves super sturdy and hardy strong grower.. and gets big but can easily be trimmed for smaller spaces.. remember my sizes are for colder non perfect JM growing areas.. in 10 years only . If you put this in full sun like most other red JMs it will burn so a little noon to 3 pm shade best It is a super nice cultivar with brilliant fall colors
This is a new cultivar which shows great promise . It was discovered by a really critical JM collector and named for it's very good color and form . A semi Dwarf it fits well in many surroundings. After growing this I would definitely put it on my must have list. It is in the top ten of new cultivars IMHO You should have this one for your collection!!
The distinctive green and white variegation is evident throughout the season. Butterfly forms as small upright tree in a more conical shape. It likes and needs a bit of shade but can take a lot of sun. This is a very colorful and exquisite sort of tree that I have found, contrary to the internet blowhards, is very hardy not tender at all. It is mostly green with white edge variegation, some reddish undertones in spring, and then white, green with bright red in fall; and is not hit or miss, it is reliably variegated on all leaves.. Other JM's are available with more red undertones but this one is very nice indeed, and the variegation seems to hold well as it ages unlike many others that get less so with age.
Super fabulous spring color .and good summer and fab fall color.. like a surreal season long experience ...very cool need a bit of shade... keep this phenomenal tree containerized in northern areas since it seems to be an early bud'er...but is worth having you won't be sorry see photo!! Hardy to Zone 6.
Tightly held leaves and branches that are small and shrubby with a somewhat upright growth pattern . Very nice color throughout the summer. This one is a keeper but can over time get big if not trimmed, as always all dwarfs are super easy to trim since they are shrubby and compact . This one can take some sun and is very hardy even does okay in wet areas. It was discovered out east and as such is a good cultivar for non southern growers . But if shaded it will do well in south .. This one is a keeper as one of the better red dwarf cultivars.
You don't need to be an Elvis fan to love this VERY VERY hardy American cultivar ,... It is almost as finely dissected as Red Filigree Lace and it's color all season is phenomenal .. I think it's fall color is among the best of all Dissectum . It may look fragile but it can take some sun, some wetness and cold .It is super tough customer. It seems to be a slow grower as you would expect from such a lacy leaf just as the Red Filigree Lace is. It is in my top 10 fav. Dissectum and until this year I have never seen it available. Vertrees ( or his cohort) says it can have golden yellow fall color which seems a stretch and i have never seen that coloration at any time in this plant. I have grown this now for 6 years in a wet non JM friendly area it has done fine and never has winter die back in the coldest of winters!!.. and I have one of the top if not the top of the very fine lace leaf available.. This is a must have if you want a lacy very frilly dissectum that is not a wimp as some others of this ilk are .. VERY HARDY and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Orange
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This one is a keeper. It is brilliant in spring and fall color and great late summer flushes . Seems to like sun . The color is almost dream like …very surreal .The tree will likely stay on the smaller side in these here parts . VERY HARDY and can take full sun as long as you are not too anal about it as no JM really likes full sun . This one does better than most and when you trim off any fried leaves in full sun new growth comes in bright red . Translates to: "Red Tide"
This is a very nice tree that must have a bit of afternoon shade. It has simply fabulous spring and fall color. It also has a very classy serrated leaf shape that is stunning in the summer with it's dark green color. This tree is somewhat of the weeping type which is relatively rare. There are only about a dozen or so true weepers among the hundreds of JM's available. This neat JM has an added plus of being relatively small in stature. It is perfect for something truly different in smaller spaces. I have not seen a lot of weeping in this cultivar but the leaves are fantastic in form and shape and the tree is super beefy and thick more bushy than weeping from what I have seen. This tree has a lot to offer for just about everyone. Occasionally used for bonsai. Translates to: "Thousand Year Mountain"
Another great larger red hardy Jm has been added to the Davidsan stable. It is wider than Bloodgood but not as tall .. an excellent tree that holds it color well thru the summer .Has a very open form not twiggy like most bloodgood types. In the time I have observed this tree it has become a favorite .. it is very very pretty and superbly graceful. As per Vertrees book 4th edition, This is now known as Vandermoss Red.
A new tree I really like . it is very very pretty and graceful like its name evokes .. can get big an open and very cool cultivar . Leaves are stunning in shape and color in this larger JM is spectacular.
This is a smaller tree that is in the Katsura/Akane vein. It has superb spring color and is bright throughout the season. Being a new cultivar we do not know much about it but is an Akane like cultivar , it should be a winner. The photo shows bright summer color on a sturdy plant.
Lovely contorted branched green dissectum with lovely fall colors of orange and yellow. The branching is twisted and contorted. Did I say contorted yet? Those branches are contorted. Only one available for the 2019 season. Pick-up only. It's great.
Coonara Pygmy is a very nice bushy dwarf JM . It tends to change fall color early so you actually can see the color in north before freezes. I had my doubts about it's hardiness but have become convinced it is a wetness thing ... keep it high and dry .. this is a very nice under rated dwarf cultivar . this one can get big so don't be conned by the pygmy name.. colors are fantastic can be grown in full shade or part sun...Jpeg is from full shade in summer. I have grown to really like this one. Propagated from a witches boom in Australia.
A good spring color burst followed by a slow summer change to green then red in fall. A larger more upright dwarf. Very pretty and hardy and can handle some sun. Photo is late summer green. Zone 6 tree.
An outstanding new cultivar with great all season look with super cool leaves with tail tips seems relatively hardy,.. likes a bit of shade. great for container growing or small garden setting won't outgrow its space.Young foliage in the spring is coral pink with slender pink shoots. Leaves become yellow with pink edges, then goes green in the summer. Zone 6 tree.
Brilliant in spring with summer flushes and brilliant in fall all season beauty. This JM is of rounded trimmed shaped that is not unruly like some. It seems to be a small garden type JM. This one you will like. It likes a bit of shade and hate wet areas. New growth is scarlet in summer and fall. This is a dwarf version of Shin deshojo.Corallinum has been known under the names Beni seigen, Carmineum, and Spring Fire.Zone 6 tree.
A brand new Harold Johnson cultivar. It has great variegation that hold into the mid summer or longer in shaded areas. Its variegation is large green with white slashes of color quite phenomenal. Then later turns top solid good medium red. It looks like a keeper. Size is unknown but appears to be a smaller tree or shrub dwarfish but not a true dwarf. As with all of the late Harold's cultivars , this one looks like a true winner .. a Butterfly type but a bit smaller cultivar with much more brilliant variegation.Zone 6, but a few say they can grow it in Zone 5, so be wary.
This tree has large seven-lobed leaves that are quite distinctive with the divide going to the junction of the leaf base. The lobe tips are tail like and sharply pointed and evenly toothed. Vigorous and bushy, upright tree. Large serrated leaves.
Introduced by Buchholtz
This hardy cultivar has obviously NOTHING to do with the common dissectum Crimson Queen. It is a nice, not so small palmatum like a Bloodgood with an uncanny ability to hold its red well all season. Add this to your collection of "better than Bloodgood" JMs, it surely has a place where you just have to have another great red upright that isn't simply a seasonal one ( spring and fall like many)
This is an outdated cultivar available everywhere. I don't care much for it, and there is nothing wrong with a CQ. It is just very ordinary and other dissectums are much nicer . This one grows relatively fast and get very large.Sculptural, cascading branches and finely dissected, colorful leaves make this classic selection one of the finest of the deep red lace leafs. Foliage emerges bright crimson, deepens to burgundy in summer and finishes with brilliant scarlet in fall, maintaining its color despite summer heat and humidity. The elegant, mounding plant produces a dense, broadly spreading structure that makes a dramatic impact near water, on a bank or in a courtyard setting.
This is suppose to be the same as Ruby Ridge so I will go by that .. A small darkest of red spring color and a rainbow of fall color make this one a winner .. great for that smaller place and for those that appreciate a different rugose leaf form . I hate the name (Ruby Ridge) but love the cultivar .. it is definitely on the top ten of new introduction. It is a slow grower but VERY beefy sturdy and hardy . It does best with some afternoon shade.
This is another really cool little dwarf JM with tight sensi type leaves on stiff new red branches. The leavers are longer and larger than most dwarfs...Looks to be a great container plant but watch the water it seems to be very shy of it.
This new selection is VERY nice . It has many colors throughout the growing season . It looks to be a fast grower that does not get huge. The toothy smaller longer node leaves are very cool and layered. I have been pleasantly surprised with this cultivar .. I really like it. Introduced by Del Loucks.
It is unusual to find a Dissectum with this very dark shade of red almost a black red . It seems hardy and is finely dissected . It does though need a bit of shade or it will crisp.. I really like this one and the name describes it extremely well . I have had one in a pot for a couple of years and just planted it out .. It is truly different standing distinctly out among the many similar lighter or brighter red dissectums. It does not like wet areas and needs wind protection in colder winter areas
This is our namesake tree. It is a chance Atropurpureum seedling (which is the mother tree to many JM cultivars) that really grew on me as it aged!! . It is a very slow grower. the JM is a very open structured tree with an outward horizontal branching structure that is compact and upright. It's amber hairy slightly puffed up leaves are stunning throughout the season with a blaze of crimson red in fall that is mind boggling .This is a truly special tree that has withstood 20 below temps and the deep freeze of '06 with no damage whatsoever. The mother tree is 16 years old and about 10' tall . If you would like more photos please let me know. Does best with a lot of sun and does not generally burn . Update: Mother tree is 15' tall at 23 years old.
A very nice super finely dissected JM with outstanding rounded form rather than mushroom which sets it apart from most all other dissectum which are mushroom shaped. Strikingly beautiful leaves and shape of tree ... Great for smaller gardens where a rounded very special JM would accent your other plants well... or as a stand alone superior selection ...a real show stopper IMHO super hardy and cant take some wetness and does okay in full sun. This tree was discovered as a seedling in the NL. Zone 6 tree.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 6 - Down to -10°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Bushy
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A new small upright which seems dwarfish to me with semi pendulous branches very pretty. I planted one out this year will report back on more specifics but seems like a promising cultivar. Is good for bonsai. Is good for an alpine garden.
A low growing spreading dissectum perfect for under windows or where you want a ground huger that won't block your view ..Most Dissectums, although weeping, can get big ...so this is a pleasant find . The leaves are very pointy and long but not finely dissected .. A very pretty low growing bush. The photo is a bit misleading in that it shows sun not variegation. This is not a variegated cultivar. It is though one of the nicer wider growing shorter dissectums we have come across.
This is a very small super hardy dissectum with spreading habit. It has small dissected leaves . I am extremely happy with this one. It has quickly become a favorite of mine . can take some sun which is a plus . Mine was in full afternoon sun this last hideous summer without burn .. great fall color a real beauty .. those that see it always buy it or consider buying it.Brown green leaves in the spring.
A nice smaller addition to any dwarf collection very pretty with nice color. I do not see it getting as big as stated and is upright in form. A nice fit for any small garden with a great name... it will become your own personal cat in a hat. Zone 6 tree.
Another one of my favorite dissectums ... It does not like sun much . It's strikingly pretty down curved toothy leaves ( like eagle claws DUH ) and green stems.are of medium dissection very cool looking . Seems to be a slow grower and should stay rather small . Very distinctive.very nice a fav of mine. not to be confused by Eagles Tale Washi no o...having both really completes you collection on the eagle front
New growth is an interesting brown-red and it has unique, very dissected leaves. It has various shades of red in the summer, We LOVE this tree, it really stands out in our greenhouses.
This is a very good all around red cultivar that gets maybe 15 ft over many years and holds color well in sun . It would need part shade in hotter locals . It is a new fav of mine .. great form very full and a chunky tree once it gets a few years on it .. grows fairly slow.. It may bronze out a bit in heat of summer but will at least have a reddish tone . It is also very hardy
All around great tree with the most phenomenal fall color you could want. Just an “elegant” tree . I have grown this tree for a while and it is really cool or elegant as they say . super cool delicate leaves along with a real nice Jm form in a small tree that won't outgrow it's welcome . Also does great in containers since it is slow growing and stay smaller longer. This tree gets as wide as tall but is of uprighyt form not bushy simply put an all arounfd fav . of mine you can't go wrong with this one
This is a nice newer tree that is very pretty in every respect … likes a bit of sun to color out .It has a very graceful look and great fall color. A great addition to your “little tree” collection.I have found this to be one of ther best new al;l around dwarfs out there ... very hardy and can take some sun ... with the right siting red all season .. a tight more upright form... on my top 10 dwarf list...A must have
A very delicate dissectum but not a shrinking violet .. grows slow but is hardy very very pretty lacy leaves with small habit ..with a gold fall color that is uncommon . this one is a must have
A great new plant of the spreading not upright variety. perfect for those smaller spaces where height is a problem not width. A relatively slow grower not likely to outgrow it's spot . Has great fall color and has great potential . This is a well thought of tree developed in the south. Hard top get if available at all
This is a very nice small Jm. It has loads of larger/longer leaves . The leaves have a slight curve to them giving it a distinctive look. also known as Elmwoodie. It is striking in fall and in spring has deep green veins on its new leaves with some undertones of pink and other colors
One of the best Dissectums around. It takes sun and wind, and is hardy. Has very pretty lacy leaves . is more upright than most. It has great color every month of the season that is ever changing. A highly under rated tree except by me it is a real favorite of mine and highly recommended. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE THE BEST ALL AROUND DISSECTUM FROM THE STANDPOINT OF COLOR SHAPE HARDINESS AND EASE OF GROWING ... as long as you don't mind a larger JM of this type .. these grow FAST and get big ... Of course you can top and/or trim it to stay short and not too wide
A :great ”new” standby red upright JM which most feel hardier and later budding than even the Bloodgood . Very nice tree keeps color well throughout the summer ...But not too much sun contrary to what you read. This tree is not a fast grower here but give it a bit of space. Also known as Acer palmatum Wolff. Zone 5 tree.
A great hardy red dwarf that holds it's color well in summer... any smaller reds are always a welcome addition for a seller like myself and you just can't have too many , folks just love red JMs and smaller ones are so versatile. They fit virtually anywhere this one has a very narrow habit and and is a medium sized dwarf, it also has very deep red leaves which is unusual for very small dwarfs. This one has outstanding color, habit and with such a small size ya can't go wrong. It is one of my favorite new dwarfs
A very nice linearilobum strap leaf /bamboo leaf . Much skinnier leaves than most of it's kind .. long and skinny holds color better than most reds in summer . I think this is one of the best bamboo leaf JMs out there and the darkest red .. it does not get big and grows slowly...it is a real find and must have
This is a superior JM for the south does okay in heat. I have been unable toi get it for a couple years since some mistakenly think it is not as good as Heffner's red. I not so humbly disagree .. my EPs do green out a bit in summer but stay super nice all season .they are pretty fast growers.. In addition they are super hardy and too particular of where they are planted .. I really like this plant
This is a terrific tree with one of the most outstanding displays of fall color that seems to last and last.it has very large leaves larger than most every palmatums with washes of warm color in spring and especially fall. It may be related to the Omure yama another outstanding tree. But this tree is a hardy strong upright cultivar.
Also known as Dissectum Nigrum, Nigrum Dissectum, and Dissectum Atrosanguineum.Very old cultivar which made its way to America via Europe. It holds its deep red color through mid summer, better than most red dissectums. Known in Europe as Dissectum Nigrum and given the name Ever Red when it arrived in America. 10-year size 4'x4'
This is in high demand and just now there is some availability at more reasonable prices at least mine are reasonable. This is a really cool tree super slow grower and cute . It should be kept in a container in all but far south and kept in shade during summer till it gets some size ... and if you buy a one gal ( which usually is all that is avail ) I think we have some two gals this year buy larger ones like Davidsan's has .. buying a new graft will likely conclude in an unhappy ending. If you do well with it you can plant it out in colder areas. If you plant out you should protect it from critters because it has "EAT ME" written all over it for the rabbits and other critters. I do really like this plant but it is so finely leafed that you should expect it to be devoid of by the end of summer but only with smaller plants if it gets much sun. This does not seem to effect the tree the next season or future seasons as it becomes better able to withstand heat and sun .. the larger an older the tree, the better it will do. This seems to have no effect on it and in spring it glows .. I would call this a good spring and early summer cultivar and if you can keep the leaves on with a bit larger plant .. should have great fall color . The fall color is nice .and if you keep it in virtually full shade you will get it .. this year I will report back!!.. BTW mine is kept in full shade even up here and still de-leafed until I got a bigger trees to sell this year and have had MUCH better luck . With all these caveats I still highly recommend it as the finest haired Linearilobum available and a great addition to any collection. I love mine and as said have larger one and two gallons now that seem to be much better at taking even the heat in the worst summer on record (2012). Fairy Hair will eventually reach over ten feet in height.
I think this is just a fabulous tree .. It is on my top ten and is both super hardy and very pretty. Leaves are heavily serrated and pointed and medium sized.. it is fairly thickly branched . Mine has grown slowly under a lot of shade but in fall ZOWIE it pops .. it is suppose to get big and probably does in better growing areas but mine looks destined to be a semi dwarf for years. Summer jpeg show will try to get a fall one up soon..it is strikingly bright red. Highly recommended
This newer JM is surprisingly pretty with nice flushes of seasonal color toothy leaves .that give this tree a distinct look. I have come, rather quickly, to really like this tree. It has become one of my favorites . Its true beauty is not flashy like some but subtle coolness you'll really love.
A basic really nice green Dissectum ... it has been the benchmark for all grafted green Dissectum for years .very nice fine leaf dissectum hardy and durable.. an all around winner .
This new pint size dwarf, true to it's name is bright. But is is not gaudy and in fact a bit more muted than some other newer similar cultivars. It has a great form and shape that is upright and shorter branches keeping leaves a bit closer in . It should put a smile on any ones face wanting a smaller re JM to grace their garden or special spot. I really like this one and it has done great in hot summers and cold winters. There is really nothing like it on the market unfortunately it is hard to graft and not readily available. Zone 6 tree.
This tree, when it has sun in the background absolutely glows like it's name. Very bright, very hardy medium grower. I highly recommend this one. A bit of afternoon shade will help it but needs some sun to glow. This is the best of the semi-new bloodgood type trees. Triple trunk trees are especially nice giving a bit smaller tree but much more full and we have fireglow in both single and triple trunk (No multi trunk in 2018 season). This is a must have for any collector and a great choice for the "I want one really nice JM for my yard" crowd. About 10 feet at ten years. Amoenum style of leaf.
This is a very nice Ghost with a truly white leaf color ... should have some shade but as all variegates need at least a bit of sun to achieve best color.. I think any and all of the Ghost series are a must have's and this is no exception it is very nice!! ... and remember they are all derived from Aka shigitasu sawa ... one of my top ten favorite JMs
A dwarf Sango kaku that is in fact a witches broom of that tree. I carry it because of it's size but being a broom and in fact directly from the Sango. I would think this is a VERY good plant for warmer areas not the north ... It was discovered in Austrailia and looks like a winner for those that want a true Sango but have little space. As with all color barks you should not grow in really cold areas or wet areas . But for most this is a very nice smaller tree. Zone 6 tree.
This is a super nice dissectum that cascades nicely and is dome shaped. It is very different than other such dissectums with its spring early summer coloration of cool yellow green that's why it is sometimes called dissectum Aureum like the distinctive Aureum color.. fall colors are very cool . It is also vigorous grower for those that want a bit faster growing JM and hardy as well. I really like this one
Starting as a seedling from Musashino. It mainly has five-lobed medium sized leaves. In spring they are coppery red followed shortly with variegated bright pink / red. Going purple / red in summer. The variegation shows in patches and flashes and sometimes occupies the whole leaf.
This one is not well known. . Why??? I don’t know…maybe some don’t appreciate how cool it is … The leaves are perfect shaped and do not burn easily … the green during summer is strikingly deep . The fall colors are like a rainbow and the shape is perfect. This one is my current favorite in this group. It is both hardy and can take some sun but is a slow grower and won't soon outgrow it's space .. I have one in my front yard . This is one of the best newer JMs hands down
This is a new introduction from Japan. It is a red bamboo leaf ( linearilobum) dwarf... and as many of you know that is a rare combination. One very very cool trait that differentiates it from all others of it's genre is red stems that stay red all season .. very cool highlight very promising cultivar. Must have for any collector.Zone 6, but a few claim they can grow it in Zone 5, so be wary.
There really aren't too many variegated dwarfs but here is a very pretty one .. The leaves are light sop give it some shade .,. I really like this one and think it has a definite place in your collection since it is not only pretty but a dwarf and different.
This a very nice tree but not often available these days .. folks have passed this one up for newer cultivars that I don't think are as good for the most part . fast growing likes sun bright orangeish red in spring and fall and holds its red unto the summer very hardy and very vigorous... it is a keeper
This is a Garnet developed to be red upright like the green Sieryu .. Like most other Sieryu ( red dissectum) wannabees it falls a bit short on it's claim to fame, but to it's credit it IS a lot more upright than any other red dissectum. So it's not perfect but still different than the common Garnet and all other red dissectum and will be much more upright for those with limited width in their siting, and like the Garnet it holds its color well in summer and is a VERY fast grower
This is a VERY cool dwarf whose name means Sleeping Dragon but is more for collectors or those that have some experience with JMs. It has very small leaves that are thin in width but not wimpy and longer in length than some other dwarfs ... It is a must have for those with some experience. Zone 6 tree.
Another very nice introduction that is very pretty but a bit dicey in northern areas. Being a bit tender care should be given... but it has great rewards for those who like enjoy micro managing their JMs. Not specifically classified a dwarf but with it being in the 3-4' range ... so be it... in my book has a similar variegation to some of the ghost series but in a much smaller package. Zone 6 tree.
This is a very nice variegate which is similar to the rather garish Shirazz and seems to hold it's color a bit better in summer and is definitely smaller in stature .. It is a selected seedling of Geisha but is different and a very nice JM. I would give it a bit of shade contrary to what some may say. hate the name but really like the cultivar seems hardy and can take some sun. Zone 6 tree.
This is a hardy dissectum that can take some sun but really does better with some shade It’s curling branches are cool and give true credence to it’s name. of the dissectums this one is different .. you will be amazed at its form .. not for those who like the same old same old ... mushroom type dissectums this one is wild in form more for those with vision who like different cultivars. It is really cool tree as always it doesn't like wet feet call this one "dissectum gone wild"
A striking red linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that has very long narrow leaves . This tree will not outgrow it's surroundings. it is as cute as a button .. ( are buttons cute???) and works well with other green linearilobum especially the equally small green leaf linearilobum Kinshi.. A great tree to add to your collection or a good beginner tree since all bamboo leaf JMs are easy to grow . Smaller size makes it perfect for small gardens
One of the best JM's for sun if you don't have a partial shaded spot ... has great color in spring, does not burn in summer and glows in fall. I personally like this tree even if you don’t have a sun problem. It is just a really pretty nicely shaped upright grower. It has become in it’s own right a favorite of mine. And being able to place it anywhere …how can ya lose. Highly recommended developed for the south
I have really liked this tree in the short time i have had it . It is a very nice variegate with subtle colors .. quite pretty and not at all testy or "needy" as some green variegates are. It seems very sturdy and vigorous and can take some sun.It holds it's variegation much better than Peaches and cream with the added benefit of a great reticulated leaf form. I give this one two thumbs up !!Zone 6, but some claim to have grown it in Zone 5, so be wary.
This one both leaves out a bit early and holds its leaves a bit late so I put this in the containerize category but it is not a shrimp it gets some size.. The phenomenal colors of new growth has a great sensimilla look… almost good enough to smoke but don’t …and stay in school.Really cool looking needs a bit of shade. Zone 6 tree
A very cool addition to the Ghost family with a bit more color than some and much larger leaves the green veins in the leaf are really cool under the subtle variegated color in spring and summer .. it also has very nice fall coloration.. A great purchase for anyone who can give it 11am til 4 pm shade in summer
This is a spectacular dissectum . Hardy does not burn in sun easily . requires less water. Has form shape and leaf that is stunning in any yard .. a very nice larger dissectums And of course a finely dissected leaf giving it grace and beauty
This one really shocked me. I had put off acquiring it ( names are important and this one sounded lame) But it is a great dissectum that holds up well in summer with just a smidgen of shade. VERY VERY pretty with outstanding fall color. has very cool highly dissected leaves. One if not the only green dissectums that has fabulous RED fall color. A four star winner. the shape and form of this cultivar is outstanding .. It will be a show piece in your yard for a lifetime of enjoyment
A really nice highly dissected JM with pendulous shape that becomes like a huge mushroom .. this one gets wide about as wide as tall .. leaves are sharply toothed.. great for that special place to show off your beautiful
This a a really good green vigorous growing dissectum that is very hardy . It forms a cascading mound nicely and has deeply dissected leaves . Once you see this dissectum you will love it . Many folks look toward a lot of bright color in their dissectums they collect and ignore the really different green ones . But green mist is just beautiful and it's shape and leaf form make it a stand out among other flashier cultivars .. green is the new red!!! and red fall cor is unusual in a green cultivar most are yellow or yellow gold. this is a medium sized dissectum that won't outgrow it's space. This one is a must have
This is a really cool green Amoenum...that has a sharp tipped star like shape but with the larger sized less divided leaves of a traditional Amoenum. It is hardy sturdy and can take sun. It does not mind heat. A great tree for colder or warmer areas.
If you are looking for a short sprawling JM that really should never need to be pruned to stay short , this is your tree, This is for those that appreciate diversity of the species . color is very nice but the form is great for a short plant needed that spreads out ..it is 4 times as wide as tall. this one is easy to grow
A narrow upright tree that grows slow and won't overwhelm your smaller garden or special spot . Perfect for that special garden spot . The leaves are very odd and stalk less . The leaves are divided totally down giving a feathery look. The leaves are also glossy in spring and very pretty throughout the season ending in a nice display of color. Overall this tree is very pleasing for those that like me like very different cultivars as many others are similar to each other this one stands apart. Zone 6, but some may be able to grow it in Zone 5. Be wary.
Name means "Flower Snowstorm" this highly variegated green and white leaved tree is a stunning addition to your garden. Smaller than Butterfly, new growth is pink.
Another recent Japanese introduction from 1994.It is a cultivar that came from one of my all time favorites, Toyama nishiki. Yano considers this one of the most spectacular cultivar ever. As with the Toyama need a bit shade in summer heat but without some sun won't color nicely although it takes shade well. . . The big difference between the two cultivars is Hana matoi has little white and much more red . . It goes well with Toyama nishiki..and can be planted in tandem as I have done .. it is a bit smaller but really works well for entry was and openings where both are on either side of a walkway or driveway ... All in all I think this is equal or better than Toyama because of its red tones over dark green.with spectacular fall colors.. This is a must have tree.
A favorite of mine. Highly recommended. It takes sun well; has a quilt of color as its Japanese name portends . This tree has one of the smallest leaves of any JM each one sharply pointed ... super cool. Makes a great stand alone smaller specimen tree with a true Japanese shape.
This is a smaller roundish Dissectum that can fit in many places a typical sprawling Dissectum won’t fit in. It is a slow grower with nice color but needs a bit of sun to color out. This is a very colorful cultivar.
This is an improved version of the very pretty variegated Corallinum. It is much more vigorous which, to be blunt ,is a problem with the older less improved Corallinum.. I would still not plant this one in full sun.Although I have with no problems. But in the right setting ( some shade but enough sun to color) it is a truly cool tree that is much in demand.this is one I have grown to really like it is a vigorous grower and hardy and easy to grow Has extremely pretty leaves shiny and a bit crumpled very neat ( see photo). Zone 6 tree.
This tree has exceptional fall color with sand dusted or "fu" of yellow and brown on the predominate red. The red in spring and light green summer are most pleasing but the wait for fall is most worthy of doing so. This one is a show stopper for those wanting a smaller JM with a good full spread
I have always liked this cultivar but hard to get and have recently found some ...It is a very nice larger tree but I have it down to medium because it is a slow grower. Great fall super red color..hardy and study .. a great lawn tree.
Very pretty and colorful newer Dissectum from Australia that has an open branch structure that tends to weep early on. Heartbeat gets a bit wide but stays small but a slow grower so you can keep it very compact for ever with just a bit of trimming. This one is very nice and is on my favorite new Dissectum list. A must have.
A nice new bloodgood type JM that holds color in summer much better than bloodgood or most other JMs .. It was developed for the south . This past horrible 2012 summer it was a world class winner among the scant few that did okay in full sun and held it's color can take sun and wind better than most . Has a very nice tree form . Is also hardy like it’s cousin . Great fall color. If you want that illusive full sun red this is as good as it gets
This is a rare and much sought after tree . it will take many years to grow to even the sizes I have listed .. it is very pretty with Amoneum leaves which are more serrated than most. It is very different and has a brilliant striking fall color which it is prized for
This is a classy cultivar with leaves lobes that are divided completely to stalk. It is a medium sized tree but slow grower . full grown it may be 12 ft. color is spectacular in both spring and especially in fall . Fall color is simple brilliant. It is a hardy and sturdy tree in branching and branchettes as well as trunk... A good for lawn settings where a smaller tree is needed
This seems like an upright version of Abigail Rose . As like the Abby it is a surprisingly pretty and hardy selection for a variegated JM . The spring variegated colors are phenomenal and truly different from any other JM that I have observed . The summer blushes are different from spring and cool in their own right. A must have JM that can be kept as bush or tree shape. This in my opinion is absolutely the best upright variegate. It is VERY hardy , takes some sun , very sturdy and compact just an all around winner . If you are looking for a smaller variegated upright JM this is absolutely the best choice hands down
This is absolutely the best new dwarf out there I am extremely impressed by it ..it is hardy sturdy compact and an all around boffo red dwarf . It is a must have for any collection!! Zone 6 tree.
Of all the new ones this is my "current" favorite . Similar to the Okushimo and others of that ilk with that unique leaves rool upward at edges very cool. This one is more open but not wimpy . It has beautiful shiny tiny leafs that keep a nice Kelly green in summer then turn the most outstanding yellow color in fall. Love it you won’t ever leave it.
A very interesting tree for those that like different cultivars .. the variegation is grey green on edges of leaves...leaves are long thin pointed almost like a bamboo leaf but a bit thicker, and reticulated .. occasionally a larger leaf will appear... It has an upright vase shape form which gives it a distinctive look at a distance . this is a truly unique tree great for any collection but is easy to grow for the beginner
This another really cool different tree . it is small and thick with very cool leaves that lobes turn under . It's leaf nodes are pointy and sharp and as Mr. Sun leafs looks like a child's sun drawing Hitode leafs looks like a star fish which it Japanese name means .. Very very cool must have .. nice spring and fall color .
This is one of the best pumpkin orange fall color trees . the large Amoenum leaves offer good strong texture and size and is fast growing . This hardy tree takes well to shaping and pruning. It is now just becoming popular on the west coast ...it's popularity is long over due for the rest of us. It is a beefy hardy all around great yard tree.
From Korea via the Netherlands, this splendid cultivar is exceptionally vigorous and has outstanding and unusual shiny bronze pink spring color and spectacular yellow/gold in fall . It has large leaves and is a bold cultivar that gets really big ... this along with Hogyoku are great for those wanting a bigger JM, remember my size is for 10 years and all JMs grow slowly in most places. This tree is a bit more vigorous than most and is hardy and an all around great yard tree for those who like it BIG.
A small tightly leafed ultra cool tree for smaller spaces . Needs some shade has really cool flushes has a very sensimilla look about it if it had buds on it I'd get busted. . Again though don’t smoke it and stay in school . It is a fav of mine since it stays really small most get only 1 ft in 10 years and stays stiffly compact with short stems and small leaves and is hardy. One of the best dwarfs around, but hates wet feet and needs some shade
Another great hardy sun taking linearilobum . More of a tree than others ( less bushy) If you are looking for a good basic bamboo leaf type for most placements …this is it. Can take most any condition and is a very sturdy JM. Very pretty when backlit with sun. It is super hardy and very very pretty. I have one in my yard and I love it
Has a warty green trunk that is very different than most other rough barks .. not as showy but super cool and different .. the green bark on most of branches and some on trunk sets it apart from other rough bark trees like Arakawa. The leaves are jagged toothed with super cool fall coloration. This a must have for collectors and those that have other rough bark trees. .
This is the sister tree to Osakazuki ... but instead of red it is yellow/orange . Often planted together with Osakazuki..it makes a striking eye opening experience in fall . But it can be planted alone . Not a big tree it can be easily pruned to be places in smaller garden settings. It has large leaves like it's sister making the viewing experience glorious even from afar. This is a super great tree on it's own and with the added attraction of having it planted with it's sister tree making grand entrances grander
One of my favorites, as well one of the best unusual spring color you'll see. It is also great throughout the season constantly changing with large leaves that have stems smaller than leaves, very pretty leaves and form. I really like this truly different upright tree, in my top ten very hardy, can take some sun. sturdy branched and trunk and season long beauty
It's origin tree is located in Urbana / Champaign, IL, home of the "Fighting Illini". Beautiful tree. Should be able to take full sun and should be able to survive the southern portions of zone 5.
Very hardy purple dissectum will do great in ANY area . It is considered by many including myself one of the best purple dissectums. But don’t let that boiler plate description fool ya …this is a special tree in every manner … to put it simply …”it is way cool” it gets big but can be kept trimmed. a super hardy dissectum that is easy to grow
This is an outstanding tree . If it were just green the leaf form is striking long large highly dissected leaves...But color is superb throughout the season culminating in a fall show of amazing color . In addition this is a slightly weeping tree that is very unusual super it is upright but the weeping branches give it a shrub domed look sort of like a towering dissectum also super cool
This is a great new cultivar that really could be classified a dwarf. It is a small dense shrubby tree with heavy striking variegation on all leaves which are small... It will fit in any small spot, stays pretty condensed and full giving it a truly cool centerpiece to any garden or special place
A smaller bloodgood type for that “just fits in” location . Grows slowly and unlikely to outgrow it’s space as many other JM’s do. Very hardy takes sun and wind . This is a great tree but not often available
A constantly color changing cultivar highly dependent on location … Leaves tend to be shiny which is cool, giving it a glistening tone at certain times during the season . The reds are very nice and the greens are tinged with gold/yellow. A nice upright small tree and has fast become a fav of mine.
A rounded dwarf tree, it is a seedling from Mikawa yatsubusa, introduced by Buchholz. New leaves are pink, maturing to cream white with a pink blush. Rare and beautiful!
I love this tree unfortunately like most every winter red or orange branched JM except Glowing Embers, these types of JMs hate cold and any wetness. Our area is warmer now and unless we get a prolonged period of -10 to -20 degrees this plant should do fine. And for folks st. Louis and southward This tree should do fine. The 4 stars are for northern growers BUT 5 stars for warmer areas. It is perhaps one of the prettiest trees i ever owned Til about 6 years ago we got such a prolonged cold spell.. It does great in heat, so that's no problem. its bark is more orange red and yellow /green so don't expect a red stem . I find this stem and trunk color much cooler and different .. it looks super cool summer and winter. If you can grow it ( warmer areas) get this one . It outshines all other red/orange winter branched cultivars by a wide margin!! zone 6
This new dissectum is a nice orange green in spring giving it a variegated look unlike many other dissectums that have just one basic spring color. It is orange-ish in summer even in shade It is a bright orange/red in fall . It seems to have a very nice form . It again is billed to be an upright dissectum and by gum it is for the most part .. it actually looks like a combo between a dissectum and a highly dissected matsumurae .. I kind of overlooked this cultivar since it did not sell well but have been astonished by it's vitality color and easiness to grow and now highly recommend it .. it's just a beautiful tree.. I now consider this to be a must have
This dwarf is set apart by both it's very thick leaf set, highly divided leave type on short red branchettes, and it's ability to set seeds which is unusual for a witches broom ... It is VERY pretty compact and an outstanding dwarf that is a must for any dwarf collector.
One of the two true weeping uprights along with Omureyama that is hardy and fast growing ...get this for form but also has nice color too . An all around great tree that likely wont outgrow its "place". It's is smaller than Omureyama in both height and width.. It weeps earlier and often and weeping is not on a broad tree more upright and towering weeping form .. very cool... can be trimmed to stay shorter and be a broader shorter tree. It has become one of my favorite cultivars as I have seen it grow and take cold and heat well and has great form and color. I now consider this a must have tree
This is simply a stunning tree. I saw it out west full grown and said to myself WOW I must both have one and offer it to others. It is a truly a special medium sized red Matsumurae .Granted the name is lame but anyone looking for a great red hardy upright that grows fast and has great form a really thick tree has to have this one but limited quantities and hard to get!!!
A very pretty short upright with super cool leaves .. they are not the finely lobed leaves but are wider and more exceptional, similar to the hawthorn tree in leaf shape, double toothed and slightly divided. Tree is multi colored and outstanding. Does great in summer in full sun but a bit of shade is probably a good idea .. It is hardy although there are those that think zone 6 and warmer is best .. I have seen no problems with it .. Ideal for a small garden placement or a special corner that needs a bit of pizzazz.
This is a very nice cultivar with VERY prominent dark green veins in it's leaves throughout the growing season.. it a small tree with reticulated young leaves but as it matures during the season leaves are not so reticulated in fall the leaves are broader and very colorful . This is a great new smaller tree bordering on a dwarf...
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Upright and Full
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Reticulated
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
Another vary cool variegated JM. A smaller wide tree with nice form . Some say this is the same as Shojo no mai some say Roseo-Marginatum which as I see it neither of these is the same. Leaves are nicely accented with color many with sickle shaped. Unlike the Butterfly this tree is not as twiggy and forms a more open rounded tree. It is a nice full tree with reliable variegation and cool leaves each a little different but highly variegated .. I like this one better than Butterfly but I like more open trees ... if you want a more compact upright then go Butterfly.
A simply perfect hardy dwarf with vase like shape and great color . This
cultivar stays small but still has a tree shape rather than bush shape .. It is a very nice tree suitable for bonsai that will fit just about anywhere and looks super cool all summer . This is one of the better all around dwarfs .. this and chiba/kashima are two of my favorites
Similar to fireball but much more colorful with many different colors on the tree throughout the season, thus the name. I became a believer in this tree once I planted it out .. It is sturdy, small, hardy JM, and can take sun... what else would you ask for .. In pots I had problems with it and almost wrote it off but since planting out I am astonished how cool it is. Great for your collection. I highly recommend this one
This is a particularly nice variegated tree with more re/ pink than others. It is a slow grower and does not get big . Purported to be a bit tender as many variegates are.. and does not like full sun also no surprise... Keep in a protected spot and you will not be sorry with is one
A very hardy red reticulated leaved Palmatum ... likes some shade but can take just about any location and area conditions. This JM is not a fast grower but gets bushy not tall unless trimmed . It really does well in this area. Give it a bit of morning sun and it will be a stunning tree for you in about any location. It seems to thrive in adverse conditions for me...so if you place it well ..I have grown this one for years in full sun and it does burn a bit mid summer as most JMs do in full sun ... but it strikes back with a ton of new growth late summer and is a beauty in fall A great tree in spring and fall and not bad in summer ..in part or full shade this one will be boffo all season, zowie!!! trees with reticulated leaves are really a fav of mine and this is one of the best and hardiest
This JM has subtle variegation unlike many other gaudy ones that really seem almost out of place with out a clown car beside it .I personally prefer this type as I really don't want to show off;>) ..it is a sturdy hardy variegated JM of medium height. It is NOT a new introduction but rather discovered in Japan in 1882 now that's vintage . If you like variegated cultivars like I do but want a more subtle look and have a tree with heritage this one is for you
A really small rounded ball of a dwarf JM. It is very pretty with sharp pointed small leaves. This is one in great demand by Bonzai enthusiasts. Also known as Chiba. This is my favorite dwarf and there are a lot of folks who are NOT selling the correct cultivar although it is rare to find even the incorrect cultivar, mostly those that sell it are selling Kamagata . I have the TRUE ONE REAL ITEM!! with really nice small leaves and bushy if left to itself .. can be easily shaped and trimmed thus the bonsai interest. It is simply a great dwarf. Zone 6 tree.
This is a very pretty smaller tree with gorgeous color .. I have been a bit reluctant carrying it because it is is an early budding JM and can get hit in early spring frost.. But with so many of my customers in more moderate areas I have decided to carry it since it is a phenomenal tree .. also can be easily containerized for more dicey areas. There is also a dwarf version of this cultivar. It is of the green branch JMs rather as opposed to to the red or orange branch cultivars .. It looks really cool in it's own right or can be planted with red/orange branched JMs to have a real all year round strikingly beauty.. I would say latitude for best results use St. Louis, Mo as a starting point although if in a micro climate near water this one will do well!!
As many of you know hime ( thats HE MAY NOT HI ME) means princess or in most cases a code word for small . This is a new tree that is a dwarf or at least dwarfish Katsura. I have no idea whether it will be a bit more hardy than it's older sister so I would use the basic Katsura guidelines as your mantra on this very special new intro... It is always nice to see a dwarf version of a much liked taller JM
One great Linearilobum ( bamboo leaf) that keeps it's red color throughout the summer well ... great form and substance .. one of my favorites!! Can take sun or shade... it has stunning fall color and as you can see by the jpeg usually has lots of red seeds ( Samara ) that give it a spectacular look
A very sturdy hardy cultivar that forms a small/medium size nicely rounded tree. The green is very bright and stunning . The leaves are double serrated and almost like toothy snowflakes to me they are feathery if you like birds rather than winter . This tree does not like wet areas or a lot of sun , but for the right spot it is very different and cool. Many growers consider this their favorite JM
An outstanding new tree with exceptional spring coloration of dusty rose .. hows that for different? Turns to yellow then green in summer .. a nice showy tree. Be advised I am just guessing on size . This is a VERY VERY vigorous grower which is very good for areas not so maple friendly...Looks VERY promising.Likely a hybrid of Acer circinatum x Acer palmatum
This tree grows upright then weeps thus giving it a flat'ish topped shape. The form is more vase shaped than many. Any weeping JM even semi weepers like this one should be of interest to collectors since so few exist. The leaves overlap in a cool irregular pattern. It is a different and very cool JM with great fall color and very sun hardy as well as winter hardy
Another new Dissectum that is slow growing and has angular open branched. It looks to be a winner . My impressions of this cultivar are totally positive . I don’t see it getting too big which is good and it seems to be a slow grower. This one would make a great container JM. It is finely dissected and VERY pretty. We have grown this in Zone 5, but as always keep an eye on your tree if you grow him in Zone 5.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 6 - Down to -10°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A Very, Very pretty semi Dwarf JM and . one of “ Da” wifes favorites . Great spring and fall color . Likes a bit of shade …not too much though ..so it colors . A stunning smaller JM with really unusual larger leaves . I love this one
This is a very nice smaller tree that fits anywhere .. It has the added attraction of having a yellow and orange fall color that so many are to die for ...There is some question whether this is a linearilobum or a highly divided Matsumurae.. Who cares .. it is a nice tree to have with exquisite fall color
One great all around dwarf that has great color and form . perfect for that special space you just need the perfect stand out tree for gets wide but not tall so give it some “air” but great for containers in the smaller nook also. forms a nice rounded shape. Leaves are striking orange red in fall and orange red tipped in spring . this is a true beauty and is the same as Kiyo hime yatsubusa .. but NOT the same as Murasaki kiyo hime.. It is rare to find but well worth getting if you can find it .. and yes you have come to the right place ...we do carry it
This is the same as Kiyo hime according to most sources . . That being so this is a must have for any JM collector . It is the mother load for all Bonsai folks. Is a vigorous grower forming tiny branchettes but does not get big or grow fast and has no central leader so you have a small bush over time. Tiny leaves of great character adorn this very special tree. Translates to: Princess Cluster of Eight
Dwarf tree that has stages of red through the year. Zone is not fully known, could live in Zone 5, but not enough data yet to state that with full confidence. Can take some sun, but keep an eye on it.
This is a rare larger JM known for it's very different bark color which is light green with yellow going vertically up the stalks of both older and newer branches . Very different than other color barks. The name means golden prosperity .This is a very sturdy upright tree not no sleeping violet. Another of those highly sought after orange/gold fall trees.
A spectacular newly imported tree obtained as a seedling from the Emperors garden in Japan .. It gets tall like Oshio Beni but in most places that takes years .. it is stunning all season long with a burst of gorgeous fall color. This is a must have tree for your yard that can take full sun. This cultivar is new to me and to most others. I consider it a dwarf
some may not. It is a small tree with very pretty delicate leaves but
the tree itself seems hardy. Leaves are unusual with curvy shape
giving it a flowing appearance. Very nice spring color.
This is a cool dwarf unlike Kiyo hime it gets wide . It stays small like the Kiyo hime...but unlike the Kiyo this rare cultivar spreads out in a blanket of colorful tiny but longer , sharply shaped pointed ,heavily serrated, shiny leaves. it also has more red margins than the Kiyo hime It is a stunning addition to any area where width not height is needed.. it forms a small dense compact globe shrub ..perfect for that special spot. Zone 6 tree.
A very nice cultivar with red branches. Stunning throughout the season and hardy. Not well known ,and the name is not very JM like... but it is from Korea so be it.has great fall color with red stems which persist throughout the winter ( the red stems that is ).. This one is a must have for your collection .. hardy sturdy and very pretty all year long ...it is a winner
A bushy tree when left untrimmed with subtle Fu ( sand dusted ) white variegation ..In summer has yellow white flecks and streaks on it’s leaves. Has very nice gold orange fall color and a slightly cascading form giving it a dense lacy look. This is a very nice semi dwarf with an attitude that shows.
Leaf grouping and color make this a plant for those that don’t have suburban minds and don’t have a “typical perspective on color shape etc. The mass of leaves in bunches is unlike other JM’s .This is a very cool tree. Choose to be different!!
A very rare dwarf with leaves like harp strings close to fairy hair but not quite as slender really really close and much more vigorous grower.. It can take full sun but does better with some mid day shade . it is a slow grower and stays small but not as slow as most other super fine leafed JMs . It is very hardy with little die back but as stated above can burn like almost all JMs in full sun.. This one stays small and leaves occasionally revert to more Koto no ito type but because of small stature it can be easily trimmed off.. Reversion on many JMs can happen... but they are easily trimmed off once a season without much adieu . This one when you can get it is well worth purchasing .. it is a J.D Vertrees selected seedling and would look great in your garden setting as does mine. Zone 6 tree
A very hardy dwarf that is tightly shaped in upright form small leaves that are colorful throughout the summer with new pink/ red/ yellow growth all the way till Fall when a burst of color transforms this little JM into a big flush of red/gold/orange . Stays small and keeps it color well in sun, shade and wind . This has become a favorite of mine. I have one in the front yard and does well in shade .. it is super compact, very hardy and stays small. It is one of the best dwarfs out there and VERY easy to grow. Zone 6 tree.
One of the best linearilobum you will find anywhere. Has great shape is hardy and is all around great. Has more of a flowing form than many other stiffer Linearilobum's kind of weeping but full and layered look. It long leaves literally hang down giving it more of a dissectum look that is very unique. In addition the leaves on old and new branches are different sizes. This one is a really good all around JM and wood look great in your yard
A willowy branched small tree, showing green leaves with white and pink variegation. However, sometimes a leaf will go entirely pink. Morning sun and evening shade is preferential. Zone 6 tree.
This is a more recent introduction from Japan around 1994 . Heretofore unavailable in this country it is a really cool cultivar. Yano considers this a Matsumurae but his definitions of such are much different than Vertrees . I would put this in the Vertrees Odd leaf form category . Leaves have short , wide and uneven texture unlike any other palmatum I have seen. It has a slight variegation of different tones of green
. The size is just a guess. This is truly different and a must own cultivar
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Medium up to 12' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Bushy
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Odd or Different Types on Each Branch
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This name literally means little snow flake. But some of the leaves are not so little .. it has a reticulated variegation and is VERY pretty smaller tree. The tree is known for it's season long very nice color, and like all light green leafed trees needs some shade
I acquired one of these trees a few years ago and really like it . I am a sucker for odd shaped leaved JM's and this one is odd. This new cultivar is just crazy in leaf shape . It seems hardy and if you want a really cool truly different JM that everyone in your family will like or at least gawk at ;>) this is your tree.
This is a very nice layered tree that is little known and in dire need of more attention . It is a hardy cultivar, a vigorous grower and small enough to have it's rightful place in the garden landscape .has season long great looks with exceptional fall color. It has a broad canopy and gets almost as wide as tall. A great tree for those looking for a small to medium size JM
This is NOT to be confused with Kurui Jishi it is totally different in every way!! This is a recent Japanese introduction as far as centuries. It was produced in 1980.it is the most impressive dwarf I have seen lately. It has rolling short leaves like the Fireball, Royale etc but is not a witches broom . Although the leaves are short and in bunches just off branches and up and down them. The leaves themselves are pointed and fairly thin compared to the above mentioned. Has flashes of gorgeous color on new growth in spring and late summer outstanding newly offered dwarf . This IS a really winner to me
This a great dwarf .. It is just perfect for smaller gardens .. In spring it color changes like a chameleon and in fall is a bright red .. It is VERY compact and dense just a perfect addition to any collection .. this one is a winner!! Zone 6 tree.
Another JM with leaves that curl inward like the Hippy Fin Mo and Okushimo but thicker and more substantial AND A DWARF!!. This one is Very pretty . Likes some shade . Everyone that walks by will ask about it’s unusual leaf shape. It seems like a more of an upright with short branch form great for tighter spaces where many dwarfs may be overwhelmed. If you like unusual leaf forms this one is for you and the only small dwarf I know of with this type of leaf
A newer selections with small star shaped very distinctive leaves. it is brilliant red/ orange in fall . This is a smaller tree but not a dwarf so it holds a special place in the JM kingdom. I think this tree is an up and comer .. I will plant one out myself this spring
This is a unique Dissectum in that it is not a typical mounding type as it stays small .It tends to be wider than tall. The two tone color leaves are striking. As are the finely dissected leaves. This is just a really neat JM for that special place. I have grown to really like this one as it is different than most green mounding JM's with more color and a smaller form
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Yellow Green
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A new cultivar I know little about..but looks to have a lot of potential. it has a great form and the lime green color of leaves sets it apart from most other JM's . I am particularly fond of light green and gold colored leafed JMs as they are in the minority of JM's and really add to any collection. this one is hardy.
A semi upright Dissectum (not as upright as others have stated) that has great color that it hold well into summer then again a brilliant red in fall and an weeping but more open structure. Likes a bit of sun but not too much . Very nice addition to any dissectum collection. I have come to really like this one …it is different and striking. It is a must in any collection.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A new dwarf discovered by one of the best eyes for new cultivars in the USA . Any cultivar he has is a must have.. you can't go wrong with his JM's a very nice dwarf selection
I have always lusted after this tree since first acquiring a specimen and wanted badly to offer it to others especially in the north as an alternative to all those friggin' Bloodgoods!!. Now I have found them. This is probably one of the best red smaller to mid sized red upright JM I own. It does not lose its color in summer, is hardy, and takes some wetness. It seems to grow slowly at least up here. If you want a great red smaller upright... Lozita is for you.
There are two forms of this tree. Both are very nice and have great color. Can take sun well and have good form and substance and luminescence. Either is a winner in my book. I have planted out several and they are cold hardy and can take sun. It is a small sturdy tree with very pretty leaves with an open form and a season long pleasure with fabulous golden fall color. This is a fav of mine!!
That crazy Mama !!!…I think cooking pasta all day has messed with her brain her leaves grow like she's insane!!… This is simply a terrific tree with so many different shaped leaves it’s hard to keep up .But don’t trim …it’s not reverting just weirding out. This one is not for the automaton or suburban stereotype. But if you are slightly skewed like me it is a must have. It is a medium fast grower with nice form. Mine has stayed small but weathers heat and cold. Once established this tree is a great smaller tree for a special spot .. everyone that gets close enough to see the leaves will be astounded
This is a great small cultivar with purple green variegated leaves. It is a small tree which makes it plant-able in many spots .. the variegation is on all leaves not spotty like some .and the variegated color lasts from spring into summer. It is very different from Beni shi en in color but similar in shape . It looks really cool planted near Beni or in tandem
Upgrade your Bloodgood with this baby. It is similar but a definite improvement in color shape and form. It is not as bright as Fire Glow but similar in habit but more slender/narrow with larger leaves and upright form. I would call it the deep cousin of Fireglow or better yet "Red sky at night" ("sailor delight" ). It is a VERY nice tree for your yard and can with time get much bigger than Fireglow
This another new bloodgood type with bright pink new leaves in spring and shiny dark red in summer and great multicolored leaves in fall .. A somewhat fast grower that forms a medium sized broad sturdy hardy tree.this is a full and upright great yard tree
Another red cultivar i have been "a huntin' for". Well here it is .. It does NOT burn in sun at least up my way. It is super cold hardy. It is spectacularly red in spring and fall and holds some color through summer. This is one of my top 10 fav upright red JM's. it is suppose to get big but mine has been a slow grower. It may get big in JM preferred growing areas..but I don't see it happening here . The correct name is Masu NOT Musa ( Which is not Japanese ). Masu means "increased" in Japanese and Murasaki means purple thus intense red/ purple.
This is one of my favorite variegates .. it is upright and a bit less twiggy and more open than the similar Butterfly and has a bit more color than the similar Kagiri nishiki. it is also an older " Japanese variegate. Leaves tend to be of different shapes and sizes making it not as orderly as some of the aforementioned similar trees It's leaves and structure give a distinctive look . It also takes sun really well for a variegated tree. It's an all around keeper!!
A very cool tree with deeply divided long slender purple/red leaves with gold /green veins in spring. absolutely stunning smaller upright tree ..Has fab great fall crimson color too. I have watched mine this summer particularly and it is a phenomenal tree with a sturdy look and really amazing leaf color. This one is a winner and a must have.
This is a tree native to the mountains in Japan . It has large leaves that ate divided and very pretty . the leaves are bigger than many palmatums . It forms a small tree of stature that has history behind it . If you are looking for a real Japanese treasure this tree is for you
This is a very different. JM with leaves are flat giving it a feathery look that while some hang down giving it a weeping look .. The spring color is a very pale yellow green, Has great fall color It's colors are very satisfying and is a strong growing smaller tree that is more broad than tall. It gives a very different look to your yard and many use as bonsai. overall this is one of the more unique JM's out there so what are you waiting for
This tree grows fast especially in shade . It is a bit bigger than many dwarfs has upright growing limbs . Has longer leaves than most dwarfs and a bit more open . Very nice and won't get overwhelm by it's surroundings or overwhelm their surroundings either. A perfect solution to that special garden with lots of plants ready and waiting for a new friend. Both a good container plant or for use in small garden settings .. This one is a very nice dwarf. Zone 6 tree.
One of my fav dissectums that can take some sun. Has fab color and form and is a fast grower . It is unique with leaf shape ,color, and a shiny toothy leaf look.. I can’t put my finger on it but this one is special to me. It has become a stand out dissectum for me . it just has a fabulous form and look . It is one of the few short growers that gets pretty wide and gives a carpet of tree not the typical mushroom look Whenever I look at it think ...this one is one of the best dissectums ever
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
I super cool tightly leafed dwarf with slightly larger than the really tiny leaves of many dwarfs .. this one is prized for bonsai but as a small garden JM it is perfecto .. this one is a keeper in every sense .. If you are looking for a really dense smaller dwarf for a spot that need attention this is it!! Translates to: "Mikawa River "Cluster of Eight"
This tree is super cool veined variegate with spectacular color and duper hardy. It has reticulated / variegated leaves that are long and slender . the variegation is pink over green and white with strong green veins. leaves are slender and long with downward turn giving the tree a slightly weeping look. VERY VERY cool!! This is one fine keeper.
A special tree with unusual coloring different from other uprights . This one can get large in JM friendly areas and is a handsome addition to any collection. It's leaves are heavily toothed with hooked teeth and green veins are conspicuously evident next to it's base seasonal color giving it a truly unusual look. I have more requests for this one than most others but not available in small gallons ever
this is an old historic Japanese tree ..the real thing. A vigorous hardy light green cultivar with an Anoenum leaf if you haven't noticed elsewhere on this site i personally am attracted to since they are large and hardy divided giving them more substance than most. I can't get enough of them . This is a very pretty tree. The fall color is very cool .. but throughout the season it shines
This is a very very cool red cultivar but has a brightness that rivals Fireglow but brighter.. there may be two trees with this name as some sources have it as a dark purple .. the ones I have are brighter and stunning to say the least.. It holds it's color the summer better than Bloodgood. I have this one planted out and it is spectacular and a fast grower. About 8' at ten years. Matsumurae Leaf shape.
This new cultivar seemed ordinary at first but really grew on me . It’s leaves have great substance and are large and very cool shape (see photo). .Fall color is a must see. Has a great open shape similar to a Japonicum. I have but a few left unfortunately since this is a particularly hardy very pretty tree that can take full sun
One of the sand dusted variegates that is both stunning but subtle .. It has red stems and is striking with absolutely gorgeous fall color. This is a great small tree that will work well in many installations. Zone 6 tree.
Just one great dwarf . highly recommended for it’s attractiveness throughout the summer. you can't have enough of these neat dwarfs . Most are different in major or subtle was whereas many non dwarfs are similar .. the dwarf category fits for most town folk with limited space . ..In my book the more dwarfs you collect the better . you will unlikely run out of space with these whereas with larger uprights you are greatly limited!!
This is a much larger dwarf than the Murasaki hime. it is a wide spreader and can get big as far as wide BUT NEVER TALL. It is NOT for rock gardens and small places like the plant Murasaki hime. But is spectacular in color and is exceptionally hardy. The leaves are super small really cool with edges of red and the fall color is gorgeous . This one is easy to grow .. you may have slight sun damage and minor winter top damage but it is easy to trim back and new growth grows quickly. I have one planted out and it is very cool. Highly recommended dwarf with character
The name means "flock of skylarks". This is an uncommon tree with beautiful pointed narrow long leaves. this one is really unique and a must have It is hardy takes sun well and is striking in the the fall. This is a true older Japanese JM making it an original JM. The Japanese call it a crystal of snow. This is a VERY rare cultivar with a unique look that is seldom seen, and we have found to be very cool and most worthy of any collection
Looks in color a bit similar to the the Kinran but leaves are wider and it is MUCH thicker . It’s a very different and distinctive shaped tree that weeps with age . An outstanding cultivar in color and form leaves are of superb color throughout the season ending in a burst of brilliant red/orange… a keeper.
Wow I have finally found this tree. I love mine... it is among the hardiest cultivars I have. It is sturdy fast growing holds its red well in sun and heat. Why anyone would want a stinkin' Bloodgood over this is beyond me. And why this tree is not cultivated more and therefore more readily available is also beyond me. It is simply a truly great deep red larger upright JM that everyone having the space to plant it should have. It is an old Japanese cultivars from 1688. There are two types of these one being lighter red and one being dark red. Both are keepers but likely the darker red is the correct cultivar
Very pretty large not very divided leaves with a full upright form as wide as tall that differentiate this beautiful cultivar from many others . It is just exquisite. And with red/orange brilliant fall color you can't go wrong with this one. Named after the river Nanase.
Apricot colored leaves in spring with prominent veins. Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade. Styled like the Ghost series with reticulated veins. It is a wonderful mixture of colors with some green, but mainly light purple in summer.
I have this one growing in my yard and have really been taken with it . There is just something about this tree that is different .. I think it is the long toothy leaf nodes with a very dissected look along with great full season color and form that suites me well . I always look at this tree when passing and have to look at the plaque .. Its name is hard for me to remember. It is an older cultivar from the late 1900's. Fall color is spectacular; multi-color with distinct veins. It characteristically has plenty of red samara.
A very dark almost black red cultivar in spring becoming more red bronze in summer and a spectacular fall show of bright bright red. It is a smaller tree than a Bloodgood and much more colorful and most often produces lots of samara ( seeds). It is a medium sized upright red of great character and form. Similar to Nuresagi but with small leaves .. a spectacular specimen tree . There is also a dissectum Nigrum that is totally different
The current cultivar we carry is also known as Ever Red. Due to fluctuations of stock from differing growers, we cannot definitively state if our current or future stock is indirectly from JD Vertrees stock of Dissectum Nigrum. "This is also called Ever Red but most ever reds are not true to this cultivar .., we have the true dissectum Nigrum Pronounced " ny grum or nie grum" very dark red through summer if shaded, in sun it will bronze out mid summer .. it is so cool .. very different than other cultivars. The dark red is strikingly different. This is one I just put in stock and I really like it . this one is the true cultivar and comes indirectly from JD Vertrees stock." -- David pre-2017
I have had this tree for years and NEVER seen it available til now . It is super super hardy has great color although some leaves are not variegated. It is a bit more variegated than Sagara nishiki and less subtle. the yellow is on the edge of the leaves in both cultivars . It grows to a nicely shaped shrub that does not get wide so it fits just about anywhere . I love mine and always show it off!! the more sun it gets the better the variegation but in hotter areas you have to shade it. The photo is in total shade so variegation by mid summer in shade is more white
This is one of the best rough bark JMs even more pronounced craggy bark than Arakawa, at three years the bark starts being rough; in older trees it is REALLY pronounced. Some folks liken this one to the bark on the Japanese black pine. The leaf form is super nice and can take full sun in many places. The colors in fall are some of the best I have seen. This JM, like the paper bark maples, gives year round enjoyment
Hot pink with deep green variegation develop on this tree after the new growth in spring appears as neon red. 'Noel' turns to green during late spring to early summer. Fall color is a bright fire engine red. Height might reach 10-12 ft in 15 years. 'Noel' was found as a variegated sport on 'Shin deshojo' by John' O'Brien in CT.
. It's brilliant color in spring and even more boffo in fall make this tree an all around winner. This is a superior re Jm in every aspect. Many think this is the same as Musashino but I find it to be smaller but with similar characteristics but holds color better in full sun..I don't see it as the same tree . Of all the trees I had in the intense full sun summer of 2012 . This tree did better than most all reds with very little leaf burn .. I highly recommend this super hardy very pretty upright cultivar.Name translates to "Wet heron"
Hyper cool red tree with great great color both red leaves and branches. This is a great red upright JM. This one should be a great yard JM or specimen that won’t overwhelm. VERY hard to get not often available each year .. it is one of the best reds available but an older cultivar it will green out in summer in shade . Predates Bloodgoods and has been passed by . I feel that is an injustice since this is a MUCH better tree than Bloodgood or Emperor one .. . I would carry it as a mainstay if it were ever available
Like the name it spirals around . It is very hardy and has nice color spring and fall and gets attention in summer with it's unusual branching . Another one I put off with it’s non Japanese name ( I really prefer older traditional cultivars but many new ones are really different . . But this one has fast become a favorite and is very very colorful as well as distinctively shaped. I have had one in my yard for several years now mostly in a lot of shade . It has grown slowly but is a favorite of mine and everyone who sees it loves it . It is similar to Germaine's Gyration but much more colorful and smaller and less leggy It's one you SHOULD own!!
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
A very nice different smaller tree with great season long coloration. The name in Japanese means "Gold calico Cloth" referring to the golden hue on top of the summer color as well as the the fall coloration ... overall just an outstanding hardy cultivar with the added plus of being diminutive. Approx 8' x 4' at ten years.
The tiny curled leaves make this tree a winner. It grows small and upright as a small version of the Lions Mane ( see Shishigashira). Great for smaller spaces Very hardy .This one is VERY easy to grow and fits anywhere.
I never gave this cultivar a second look until I got one and... WOW... it is so cool . The colors literally pop off the leaves into your eyes. It has good sun resistance up here . it is super hardy ... and has a shape to kill for. This is a truly outstanding larger cultivar in every respect and i feel privileged to own one.
This is a semi dwarf tree . it is a smaller much more compact version of Butterfly and it seems to be much more variegated. It will fit into about any location with some shade, as either a companion plant or a small specimen. It is truly spectacular variegation. Zone 6 tree.
The tiny curled leaves are hard to not like. This one is very different. This type of tree is for those individualists who don't just want another typical JM .
A brand new cultivar with crazy colors that are very different. As a variegate it need shade but enough light to color up . It's colors very speckled and unusual and the leaves nodes are not toothed and are highly separated typical of other larger Matsumurae JM's. This one is looking for that special place where everything is just right. It may be considered a dwarf by some...and it's delineation as such may happen in the future. Zone 6 tree.
This one surprised me. It like sun just fine. Has really nice season long color larger leaves. A very nice yard tree with great subtle color in summer and strong color in fall. The leaf shape of all amoenum’s are broader and less dissected giving it a more substantial look. This tree really stands out.
A weeping JM that can get big . Good hardiness but with some winter dieback in extreme conditions when young but worth it can be a single stem weeper or trimmed to be multi stemmed smaller and bushier This one is very pretty .
I have found this to be hardy contrary to others ... very pretty in spring fall and summer . The color on this tree is boffo if given some sun and it doesn't burn as easily as some ... but a bit of afternoon shade would be perfect. One very nice JM. Zone 6 tree.
This is a very attractive weeping dissectum that is more red in sun and orange with more shade . But it needs sun to color up well. It tends to have a lot of bright red summer flushes of growth that appear strikingly against the older greener leaves. As many other JMs this cultivar does NOT appreciate wet areas . So plant it high and plant it dry .
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Orange
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This is a hardy compact dwarf like wider cultivar. It gets very broad and has habit similar to a large dissectum. The color is spectacular and is deserving of a special place in your yard , a place of great visibility to be admired. Some may consider this a semi dwarf. It has a unique stature that is very pleasing .. It is one of my faves ..VERY different
A very nice smaller tree with pastel colors .Sometimes the more subtle JM’s fit in many more placements And this one will go about anywhere just fine thank you!!.Zone 6 tree.
This is a good sturdy cultivar with VERY pretty substantial leaves throughout the season .This is the cousin of the bright orange (fall) coloring Ichigoyoji. It is often planted with this orange cultivar giving two great fall coloring trees that compliment each other and the space they are planted in. This tree can get big in maple worthy places but here will likely be towards the smaller end of my specified size range.
Another Osakazuki cousin of the kissing variety. it is very similar to the others ... the plain and rubrum. Just different spring coloration . This tree is one everyone likes and I am happy to offer it in three varieties that all are different enough to stand alone as great trees worthy of owning.
This tree has very large leaves and a spectacular fall display that is truly eye catching. It forms a rather large tree in some areas but I expect it to be medium sized here even with some age. A truly superior traditional Japanese maple.
A very hardy reliable bright red open JM that does okay in sun but can take the cold also . it doesn't much like wet areas and tends to be a slow grower but is a nice medium to small red upright . I don't see it getting anywhere near 12' here in many many years but in friendlier confines it may get even bigger.
This is another great vigorous and desirable dwarf that grows wide. This is a dense but not twiggy cultivar denser than Kiyo hime ( not dumber just closer branched and heavily leafed ;>) ) It can be easily pruned and shaped . This one is a keeper.
A very nicely sized and shaped tree , Not twiggy like some and not too tall or short …just right. Has lots of seasonal color a great all around JM.
Zone 6 Tree
Great spring summer and fall color ...It needs a bit of shade, but is a phenomenal looking dissectum. It is surprisingly different and has great form . it has really taken me by surprise and become one of my favs. My hat is off to Otto whomever he is ??!!
I do not know the hardiness of this cultivar for northerner's .but in containers for northerner's and for anyone else this is a superior tree . Its pointy ruffled leaves are super cool. Coloration is phenomenal...and to top it off it is different not like any other cultivar I have seen. It's colors change constantly throughout the season and are highly dependent on where you put it but always gorgeous . Should be given afternoon shade as most JM do. For a smaller dwarf like tree of stunning looks that is unlike others this cultivar is a must have. The photos are from late summer in almost total shade so it is not colored up.
Another fav of mine...not well know but it should be!!. Very hardy and tough and grows close to ground even if staked great spring to early summer color and fall as well. Very cool sprawling tree . Holds color well til at least midsummer with a bit of shade. This is not a new cultivar, just an undeserving ignored one . It is a great choice for all areas especially the north.
Good red fast grower nice branching upright structure, and is an offspring of the famous Bloodgood. We have a beautiful one planted on the north side of our office. Fully exposed to the north and west winds of winter.
A Korean cultivar that has very long linearilobum/bamboo leaves .. It is very pretty and seems to be much less touchy than the Red pygmy .... holds it's red color well ,can take some sun and like most all linearilobums are super hardy . Basically everything ya want in a small tree It looks like a keeper
Another great Ghost . Great purple red spring and early summer color and holds some color through out the season . Has the same distorted leaf look as the amber ghost and the Aka shigitasu sawa and the Kasagi yama . This one and the Amber Ghost are truly special.
Beautiful dual colored leaves in spring. Fresh spring leaves have an amazing color to them. Variegation can differ from leaf to leaf. Deep Red / Pink in spring. Red / Pink in summer. Strong Red in Fall. About 8' x 4' in ten years. Variegation could unstable at older ages.
Another neat red Dissectum that holds color . It does well and stays red ( unlike others) in a lot of shade but can take some sun too and seems fairly hardy. A slow grower and perfect for those that want a smaller dissectum to stay small longer. Some have grown this in Zone 5, be wary and keep an eye on him for your area if in Zone 5. We have one planted here at the farm in full sun. We are on the Zone 5, Zone 6 border. Tree was founded in the US of A.
This is an extremely pretty dissectum with nice finely dissected leaves and great fall color .. it seems to be a bit smaller growing dissectum than many others which is great for those corners that need some interest..I really like this one ...Discovered in Italy, from Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery.
I find this to be a better and hardier and more colorful tree than the standard bearer Bloodgood from whence it likely came . This is a great all around red Palmatum for this area. It is a fast grower and can take many adverse conditions . I always suggest this one it is easy to grow.
This is one of many red Bamboo leaf specimens but one of the better smaller ones . Not "officially" a dwarf but could be considered such . These Linearilobum are among the hardiest of the palmatums and are easy to grow, takes more sun, wetness, and dryness than other palmatums .. I really like red cloud for a smaller bamboo leaf cultivar
This is an excellent red dissectum that is super hardy to zone 5 and fairly sun resistant., better than most red dissectums. It is an all around winner and considered by many the best red dissectum on the market today.
This an extremely fine leafed dissected tree that stays small, grows slowly, is super hardy, and is untouched by sun . What more could you want. it is really super cool. I love this one . It holds it's color all summer (even though I have bronze in my description) ... I have not seen bronze as others have.mine stays fire engine red. it is one really special red smaller heavily dissected mounding tree ... perfect for that special spot.
This is the one everyone wants and is hard to get. It is a relatively new Dissectum both greatly dissected and frilly. Some may consider this one a bit girly …so if you’re a guy (unlike myself )who is on a manly /macho “trip” give it to your girlfriend or wife or both. And so what if they call you a "girly man" you'll still have one of the prettiest dissectums around to look at when your not watching Nascar.
This is a linearilobum that needs some shade. Seems fairly hardy and has yellow gold fall color most unusual and different than other red Linearilobums.Superior to Atrolineare, colds holds better and it sunburns less.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Dwarf 3'-6'
Tree Form: Upright
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Bamboo (Linearilobum)
Spring Color: Red
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This is again a special JM is for those that like me that appreciate leaf shape . It has a thick rumpled look. It is VERY VERY cool .Just a great smaller tree that can take sun with the best of them. Zone 6 tree.
One of my Wife’s favs. Very nice color throughout the summer very hardy and open tree only good things can come from getting this one. You’ll love it!!
This is a truly phenomenal smaller dissectum with super fine leaves but grows relatively fast compared to others of this genre. It takes full sun at least up here and is super hardy with never any winter die back. I don't think this one will get too big and if it does it will be after many years . Perfect for that smaller area especially in the north .. this one is one of the hardiest dissectums i have found . It is VERY pretty and highly recommended !!!!This is the same as Beni kumo no su
This is a brand new super cool dissectum. It is of most beautiful color shape and form. Discovered and introduces by one of the world's foremost JM collectors who has an eye for such JMs that is so exquisite you better not pass this one up. fall color is especially outstanding with red leaves with unique yellow veins. Survives Zone 5b in our area.
This is perhaps other than Davidsan the brightest fall cultivar i have ever seen . Add to that super bright red spring color and red tones during the summer, set this tree apart from all others. If you want the reddest of red, brightest of bright, hardy, sun taking, upright, open, larger tree ...look no further
A showy rounded red dwarf that is hardy sturdy and closely leafed . It makes a small bush with extremely bright red fall color . Hardy dwarfs are hard to find especially red ones so keep this one on your list. Plus it has a very cool name "cluck...cluck" .
A very low grower with VERY finely dissected leaves . Red is it’s color, a dwarfed mound that is short and slightly spreading. With the most exquisite leaves you’ll ever see. Zone 6
A very fast growing upright tree with a narrow form . This tree is a reliably great red all season and super hardy. This is just simply a beauty .. If you looking for a medium size red this is a very good choice
This is a new spectacular dwarf that is as colorful as any I have seen .I put this one above both Fire Ball and Kandy Kitchen …but all three stand on their own and are a matter of personal preference.. A truly great new introduction
This is a cool tree. It has deeply divided leaves but they are thick and ruffly may be the same as Crumple leaf or Red Rugosa. It forms a small upright super hardy tree that can fit anywhere . It has the darkest red of any JM cultivar with a blueish tint which looks cool against it's short green stems. It holds it's color late into the summer when it turns green than tones of orange. If you are looking for a smaller red hardy tree that can take some sun this is it!!
(Also known as Beni Hoshi) This is a new dwarf that has very, very pretty small pointed star shaped leaves ... I haven't found the summer color to be as red as most state, but that is par for the course for most red cultivars . It likes a bit of shade as MOST JM's. This tree has a very different look and would be perfect if you are looking for a smaller cultivar . This tree has really grown on my ... I really like it.
This is another Bloodgood type tree but smaller. The big difference is that the red on this tree is phenomenal ten times as bright and flashy as it's taller relative(s). It just absolutely glows in spring summer and fall ... This one needs a bit of shade and is hardy but is a slow grower , so it would go in almost any placement for that special tree.
Another in my new variegates not often seen or obtainable . this is very nice smaller nearly dwarf or could actually be categorized a dwarf. It is very nice form and multi branched. Zone 6 tree.
This tree can be used as a creeping ground cover or if staked a upright weeping masterpiece . It can also be used on waterfalls or over rocks for a very distinctive look . One of the coolest JMs out there and Davidsan has it .. This is a must have... DON"T confuse with Ryuzu ... That is a totally different albeit super cool more dwarf tree
This is a really nice variegated JM . It is sturdy and hardy and won't overwhelm a space. It is similar to the Nishiki gasame which has done exceptionally well for me and is a true crowd pleaser . This tree has the distinction of a bit more vibrant yellow variegation and larger leaves. This is one to be sure to get . Not to be repetitious but give it a bit of shade.
A really nice small red with medium size palmatum leaves. Bright red and can take lots of sun, very hardy, one of David's favorites! Approx 6' x 4' at ten years.
This is a truly outstanding tree .. there is some confusion whether this is the "actual original" Sanguineum.. But this is now what is available, albeit not readily available, in the trade. And the color matches the name whereas the one Vertrees describes DOES NOT!!! ..,. It is one of my top 10 fav trees winter hardy at least down to -17 below .. and is just season long gorgeous.
Star shaped bright green foliage set this super cool Amoenum apart. It's
leaves are thin almost transparent allowing them to easily be backlit
by sun for an outstandingly different look. Its leaves stand out
horizontally so it looks layered and older branches are bright green. It
becomes a tall shrubby bush but you can trim it to be just a multi
branched small tree/shrub. This one is a stunner. About 10' x 10' at ten years.
Great color!! Red bark with light green leaves that have pronounced speckled red edges in the summer! It's a stunner. Witch's broom that's more vigorous than Shaina and more bushy too
This is a very cool rounded leafed tree that has a great form . leaves come out yellow / green with red tips then turning green with red and then green and finally fall super red . If you like a round leaf JM like I do... this is one to get .. it is hardy and super cool.
This is a really super cool not before available variegated palmatum that has an Aka shigitasu sawa look to it albeit much smaller thinner leaves with white variegation and a more upright form .. super cool must have. I think this is more of a dwarf to semi dwarf. Translates to: "Swamp Plover"
This is a very nice sharply toothed tree with thick layered leaves that are striking all season . Hardy and durable this tree makes a nice statement in any yard
Another of the Bloodgood types .Great all around hardy tree with good sun resistance and good color all season . This is an all around perfect upright red JM for the yard. The fall red colors surpass the Bloodgood in my opinion.
This a Very hardy cultivar. it can take sun but does better in a bit of shade. It simply glows all summer. The fall red is just an afterthought and a good one at that. I love this tree . It does great here and is really different for those unaccustomed to the multi cultivared world of JM's .. I mention this cause it is so easy to grow if this were your first "different" JM you couldn't do much better.
This is a very nice larger Jm. It seems hardy can take some sun and it's fall color is amazing .. As with all oranges it is a shade of red/orange and is more orange the more sun it gets and the how the sun hits it. It grows fast grows new branches when any are damaged and is a real all around winner .. It is not orange all year round here but may be some places . but if you want a truly brilliant larger growing Jm this is a great new choice.
A nifty variegate that seems to have a loot of different shaped leaves on it differentiating it from other variegates .. It seems very small and dwarf like although not classified as such I am doing so.. Has a more open shape than other dwarfs hence the fact others don't classify it as such .A very interesting introduction worthy of a placement in any Japanese garden or other smaller space
A very cool dwarf with bright red pink spring color . It is simply striking. BUT it leaves early so best for containers or south or protection. Since it is a small dwarf it should be easy to cover so I wouldn't loose too much sleep over that aspect .. it's spring color is too cool to not snap up. This one is a winner. Zone 6 tree.
A truly upright dissectum many have tried to duplicate and failed. It may be the only true upright dissectum in existance. It has great all season lacy look can take some sun and is very hardy. Grows fairly fast. This one is a winner.
This is like a non dwarf version of Mikawa yatsubusa, but still a smaller jm and a true Japanese cultivar. Overlapping flat leaves give this a very unique look. Name translation means blue green palace in the clouds. A very nice tree for a smaller space but will give a more substantial look than many dwarfs .
This is a very sturdy hardy dissectum with a feathery appearance. It seems to have more beefiness than many other dissectums . In addition it has one of the best golden fall color bursts of any dissectum and I might say most JMs period. If you are looking for a good all gold dissectum that will compliment your red's and orange's .. this is your tree
This is a nice hardy cultivar that also takes sun rather well. It has very small leaves that unlike other such JM's are also longer. The leaves tend to be bunched or on masses. The ends of the branches are flattened allowing growth to grow out of them in different directions . The actual look is quite pleasing. Translates to: "Petrified" "Cluster of Eight"
This is a brand new variegated dwarf until recently only avail in Europe. This is my first year with this one but it looks very cool. It has been known to be a bit tender in spring so for other than southern areas it is probably best to keep containerized
A simply great red dwarf with thick and bright clumps of leaves. It can take some sun. This is a true small gem that will fit just about anywhere and is really different.. I do not recommend this for containers it is water sensitive .. but in the ground does well even in north. Zone 6 tree.
Hardy slow grower for me . Will get big in some areas . Around here I would expect it to stay fairly small for years . Great for rock gardens . likes a bit of shade but can take some sun.
A very cool dwarf with highly divided leaves and a great darker red color . Leaves seem a bit larger than most dwarfs not in width but length making this one a superbly different specimen . A must have
A very nice medium to large JM with fire red fall color and a red the has some summer bronzing but holds its red color deep into the summer .. this one is hardy and a great all around winner
This tree has most vibrant yellow green color of any JM in spring! It is also nice throughout the season. Be advised this is an early leafer so keep containerized. regardless this JM is a but a must have. If you want a real eye opener, this one is for you.
Another nice selection that shines in spring and fall . This one likes a bit of shade..Very pretty with very unusual leaves. A green version of it's 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' but not very reticulated or as hardy... If you want a really hardy cultivar the AKA is better
A great feather leafed tree giving any area a distinctive look . Some say this is tender I must totally disagree!! I have found it to do well in full sun and in -17 below temps and with wetness. It is definitely hardy ...very hardy. . This tree is very cool and different thus should be on your must have list. It is a Davidsan favorite .
This is one of the prettier mid size JMs. It's spring color of bright pink is quite unusual . Add to that a Kaleidoscope of summer color with phenomenal bright fall red and you get a very, very nice cultivar . This cultivar seems both hardy and can take some sun . It seems to be a bit more upright and taller than the similar Shishio Improved ( Chishio Improved) It's a winner. Zone 6 tree.
Variegated leaves are similar to higasayama, green, white and pink. Shrubby dwarf with bushy upright form. Zone 6 tree. We have beautiful older specimens of this cultivar that are almost six feet tall! Stunning.
A very nice very hardy tree that looks great all season . This one is special to me since it is one of the first ones I received . It has VERY nice leaf shape and it's tree form is desirable suitable for even smaller spaces . A very nice, ancient cultivar first mentioned in 1710. (Not to be confused with Shigirame.) Everyone loves it but it is a pretty rare find. I have grafted this one and we have several that I grafted in inventory for sale (2017).
A brand new high demand variegated cultivar from New Zealand. It resembles the Itame nishiki but with much more color especially in the red areas and a much larger more open form and larger leaves..also Geisha Gone Wild and other such variegates . This tree has shown to be very hardy and okay in some sun and a winner among those that spent big bucks to buy it early in it's USA introduction period . I now offer it in many sizes at down to earth prices. This tree does dull out in the summer .. but what JM doesn't in spring and fall it shines
A simply great small dwarf with super dense foliage. It has a nice soft look with leaves so close together an small branchettes since it grows so slowly. This tree does not sun burn and holds it's color well . This one is rare because it is hard to propagate and one you should really consider getting if you are looking for a good hardy smaller JM. In Japanese the name means Lion cub or small lion. Translates to "Lion" "Cluster of Eight"
A must have tree with bunches of branch-laden curly leaves that look like a lion's mane for which it is named. The name refers to the mane of a mythical female lioness of Japanese drama. It is hardy and can take some sun and a medium grower. It has been in cultivation since 1882. This is a tree you have to touch as you pass by just to see if those ruffled stiff leaves are real . A really cool tree with a different look ...for a smaller similar tree see 'Ojishi' which means 'lion' (male lion) which is even more compact than Shishigashira. A lioness is known as 'Mejishi'.
Another great dwarf. Or “little tree”. This bush like tree is a fast grower really nice tight leaves and great form . Does great in container or in landscape with a bit of protection. This one is a must have.
This one is a keeper. It is brilliant in spring and fall color and great late summer flushes. Seems to like sun. The color is almost dream like …very surreal .The tree will likely stay on the smaller side in these here parts. VERY HARDY and can take full sun as long as you are not too anal about it as no JM really likes full sun. This one does better than most and when you trim off any fried leaves in full sun new growth comes in bright red. Translates to: "Blood Red"
A great red hardy cultivar with Matsumurae leaves. Deeply colored almost black sets it apart from Shojo nomura which is a medium red. It holds color well with a bit of shade The leaves are slender and long but very symmetrical in a star pattern. It is NOT a dense tree and has an open look while branching more outward than up as it grows. It's name means red faced monkey or orangutan. Shojo is used to signify red.
This is a semi dwarf Shojo ... the Japanese words mean red princess. It is of super nice form and stays fairly columnar . A very cool dark that holds well the red season thru . This is not a broom, so no reversion or unforeseen changes over time and should be VERY hardy. Zone 6 tree.
This is another older super hardy red cultivar for northerners and others as well . It seems to take just about anything thrown at it. In the north it holds its color well in summer in south it greens out . It is of a smaller size than Bloodgood but of the same ilk for those that want a Bloodgood type tree but have space limitations.... and IMHO much cooler in every aspect than the overused Bloodgood.
This is my favorite of the Ghost series ghost. I simply love the toothy distorted leaves. This is truly a special tree and is so cool it is a must have. The leaves look like serrated knife edges, but don't worry it won't cut you. It's form and substance are unsurpassed.
This is a vigorous grower so give some protection in colder areas cause of late growth and tenderness. It is similar to other more dwarf JM’s like Royle with its small tightly clustered leaves. Supposedly a relative of the Bloodgood in smaller form …but doesn’t seem quite as hardy . VERY VERY pretty more so than the Bloodgood and a tree everyone should own even in a container if necessary.
This is a seedling from Viridis that was so exceptional it became a new cultivar as many cultivar are birthed in such a way... it's phenomenal spring color make it a good choice for those wanting a good green dissectum with good fall gold color but also a great spring look . it is hardy can take some sun and what you would call an improved Viridis in every way.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
Another one I poo poo’d at first. Then its outstanding color and semi upright shape struck me. This is one very nice different dissectum. Various shades of red during summer make this most unusual. Marlon Brando would be proud ( Stellaaaaaaaa)
White and pink (strawberry) ruffled leaves with extremely prominent dark green veins. Slow growing new cultivar for us. Height is unknown at this time.
This is one of my favorite new dissectums. It comes from the Netherlands. It has white and green variegation and really cool leaves It is a slow grower and stays small and many of you are wanting smaller dissectum. The variegation becomes less visible as it goes thru the season but overall this is a very very cool JM Highly recommended. Since this is a dissectum and not a dwarf .. I have put it as up to 6 ft in 10 years but I would say this will not get this big in 40 years.New growth is thistle like, older growth is more typical of dissectums VERY cool.
This cultivar is very hardy for this area. It has a nice soft texture and is different from "Bloodgood" types . It's leaves are of Matsumurae style , meaning very divided all the way down to the base giving it its own style . that together with phenomenal color makes this one a winner.
This is a new cultivar with a golden summer color .. although it needs to be mid summer and hot to get it .. I am just guessing on size. It looks like a definite plus for those wanting a bit of different color in summer . This tree seems to be very unique
A new selection with phenomenal fall color just an all around dynamite dissectum and one destined for future stardom... Takes full sun and hardy to -17 and takes most soil conditions ... developed in the south to withstand summer sun and heat.. You can stake it and make it a bit taller but natural form is more of a ground spider ... great for those spots for a low growing very nice JM
A new smaller SEMI dwarf bloodgood type .. very very nice It has been called Swat Margaret .. I hate that name and it does no justice to how nice a dwarf open upright red this is . Finding a truly open branched faster growing dwarf reds is special. a must have. This one is VERY hardy( -20) although I have placed it in -15 for safty purposes for this area and does descent in full sun HERE. It is no longer in production but may be available .A new smaller semi dwarf bloodgood type .. very very nice
Finding a truly open
branched faster growing dwarf reds is special. a must have. I have
grown this for several years and am very pleased with it. It grows
slowly so it won't outgrow it's spot. It takes heat pretty well and sun
and is very hardy in winter. It's leaves are larger than most any dwarf
and some may not consider it a dwarf but a small upright and it forms a
very nice upright small dwarf or tree
Bright red new growth in spring, dark maroon leaves in summer contrast with the bright green bark. Sometimes this cultivar shows white variegation on the maroon leaves.
A great variegate. With variations of yellow/green, and green/yellow from spring 'til fall and then more reds. With its prominent red stems it makes each summer even more stunning .Big leaved brocade Six to eight feet at ten years.Zone 6
A wide spreader that stays small .. A fast grower with very pretty small sharp leaves with a slight curve. Flushes during summer are stunning. This is one that will thrill ya. this and Yama hime are often confused.
The hardiest of any red dissectum hands down . Can take some sun is a fast grower, can get big. If you want a great red dissectum for this area this one is a must have. This one is extremely easy to grow recommended for a beginner but a must have for everyone!!
The larger leaves make this a nifty selection . Amoenum’s just have grown on me and this one especially so. I really like this tree. It also has simply one of the best gold fall leaf colors of any upright. This is a must have!!
This is obviously named for the TV Character not the ink impressions..."Da plane Da plane". This is a very slow growing spreading tiny dwarf not unlike Mikawa yatsubusa except in the aforementioned very slow growth rate. It has a nice dwarf habit with tiny bunches of leaves making this a tiny but distinctive addition to any garden or small space and one that knows it's place and won't screw with you by outgrowing its space and in turn welcome like many other "so called" dwarfs
This is a tree with "leaves gone wild". Not in an unruly way but masses and masses of them . They are almost Linearilobum in shape very long and slender. This tree is stunning all summer especially with a backdrop of sun.The tree has a narrow shape and upright and dense. And you'd be "dense" not to consider this one. Zone 6 tree.
This is a yard tree that can get big . I really like it’s shape and form. Leafs will green out in too much shade in summer like many other reds .Fall color is among the best in a JM I have seen. So maybe “The Cardinal” would have been a better name. A boffo tree for your front yard.
This is a small bushy tree with slightly pendulous branches. It has VERY pretty hand-sized leaves, with prominent veins and almost striped coloration. It's brick red with darker red coloration when growing in the sun and green with darker green coloration when in the shade. Unusual!!!
May be the same as Mini Mondo . A really neat dwarf with …ya got it , tiny leaves. Red stems really make this tree stand out. Another good dwarf selection.
This is a small cultivar discovered in Penn. It is a good dwarf with a pretty shape and is small as the name suggests. It has a dense habit and forms a small bush .. It is super hardy but does not like wet areas. So if you have a high and dry place for this one you will not be disappointed. A very cute cultivar.
A broad, upright habit, even when young, supports the dense, green canopy of this JM from spring through summer. In fall, the foliage bursts into an unsurpassed show of brilliant colors that starts on the lower branches and advances up the tree. Gold appear first and changes to orange, then scarlet until all three colors on display at once. Finally, they all go completely scarlet. Spectacular!
I have had great luck with this tree in part shade. It is surprisingly VERY hardy and has great color all summer and fall . It is a slow grower but has lots of leaf bunches throughout the season. With lots of new growth flushes constantly appearing making this an ever changing VERY colorful special and distinctive cultivar. This is one of the very few variegated dissectums and definitely the best all around
This is a great columnar palmatum with yellow-green leaves. It is a very fast grower and can reach up to 20' over time. It is very cool with fabulous red fall coloration on a very columnar tree how cool is that!!!
A very nice older cultivar from the 1800's in Japan .. Very pretty thin translucent deeply divides and heavily toothed leaves distinguish this cultivar. and it's ability to grow larger than many other JMs. It's orange fall color is a real plus along with it's retaining a red blush /highlights thru most of summer.
This is a very hard to find dwarf. It is both hard to graft and a very slow grower. I have been looking for it for years and have finally found it. This dwarf is unique in form (more upright) and leaf shape and size (VERY VERY SMALL LEAVES). If you are looking for that truly different dwarf Tsukumo is for you!!
This is one red tree with broad star pointed purple/red leaves with little dissection. It needs a bit of sun but not too much or it will green out on ya.This one makes a great smaller garden tree. It looks like a very dark red leaf Umegae ... similar in leaf look with green stems .. Very Cool
This is a truly beautiful cultivar that is a slow grower and makes a small bushy tree of great spring and fall color. it had red tips in spring on lime green leaves in spring and early summer . Reds of various shades predominate in fall . This is a bit of a tender tree as a yellow/green lime green thin leaf cultivars are. So best in this area give a lot of protection or containerize. This tree goes well with JM dissectums and many other yard and garden plants.
In spring, the soft, pendant chartreuse leaves on this small, rounded tree sport dramatic edges of persimmon red, an effect that looks like many dainty leaf-hands with brightly painted "nails." In summer, the foliage continues to demand attention as it develops wide, deep red margins and light cream centers. In Zone 5 area, it is full sun. In Zone 7 areas it is partial shade. In Zone 6, be watchful. soft yellow green leaves tipped in crimson. fall gold to orange. upright dwarf.
This is semi dwarf red cultivar. It seems to be another bloodgood offspring. It is very pretty and seems to be a bit brighter than it's cousin. It keeps its color well throughout the season. It is a thick column-shaped tree that will look perfect in place that needs a bit of filling but not too much.
This one has surprisingly spectacular yellow and yellow/green color . It needs sun to really shine but as with most JM’s …too much will fry it. It forms a small tree that is one of most eye catching cultivars you’ll see around these parts
This is a surprisingly hardy tree unlike the Katsura of which it has similarities to but most consider this cultivar superior from . Although some say it buds early and that can cause problems in areas of late frost,I have not found this to be the case but thought I would warn you anyway. It has just the best spring color and for those wanting a good orange fall color that is rare in the JM world this cultivar is for you. As I said late frost folks should always be careful with cultivars from the Katsura group but if you like them as i do this a truly superior tree in every way..both vigorous and hardy.Tree is a Zone 6
This is an extremely hardy sturdy smaller tree. I really like it. It has taken my tree 4 years in the ground to get that 'floating cloud" look of heavy white variegation shown on other web sites . VERY nice and different. Leaves have a very distinctive look and this JM has GREAT form and character. Highly recommended for this area. Just patience is needed for full color of leaves .. your wait will be greatly rewarded!! To get maximum variegation don't fertilize with nitrogen and try to neutralize any nitro in soil. Zone 6 tree.
This is one of my favorite trees . Some say it is the same or similar to the Aoyagi. It forms as beautiful small tree with light green leaves and a brilliant fall gold color. The branches are similar to Glowing Embers in that they are yellow green and coral in winter. This combo of leaf and branch color make this hardy perfect replacement tree for those who hate Sango Kaku and have a dead one to prove it... but still would like to have some winter color so their tree has year round beauty.
This is one fantastic rare super hardy cultivar . You’d never know it’s hardiness by looking at it . The beautiful luminescence belies its super hardy nature. It has done better than most every other JM including Bloodgood over cold winters with very little die back . It is simply gorgeous all season long . It forms a small tree that will fit most any where. It is a slow grower but worth the wait . You can’t do much better than this one.
Similar to the Amber Ghost . Forms a really pretty shrub like tree . Has great spring and fall color and seems to have a bit longer less compact leaves than the amber Ghost … Very nice…you really can’t go wrong with any of the Ghost series. A bit of shade is a good idea with all of them. Some say they are all a bit tender which I have not found to be true but keeping any Ghost a bit protected is probably a good idea. It has dark red bark.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Bushy
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Reticulated
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This is an outstanding older cultivar with nice size rounded leaves . It has the look of shiny grasshopper skin . It is a very rare and unique cultivar. Very cool.
A really hardy but relatively slow grower that can take some sun.. All dissectums are not recommended for this areas but this one is among those that is. I have had good luck with it under all sorts of wet, dry, cold, warm conditions.. This is one I highly recommend.
A newer red palmatum that holds color well can take some sun and wind very nice sturdy upright tree . This one looks to be a keeper. Formerly known as Cristy Ann, per Vertrees book, 4th edition.
bloodgood/witch's broom. Petite clumping leaf growth. Very small, slow grower. This is the only dwarf bloodgood in existence VERY RARE we are one of just maybe 2 sellers of this cultivar in the USA. VERY HARDY
Vic seems to get around. This small cultivar is bushy and thick. It will add substance to any smaller placement. The greens are of several different shades depending on age in spring and summer giving it a layered look.
A nice new Dissectum with claw like leaves that are long, pointed and go downward. Has bright fall orange red color . A nice addition to any collectionsuper hardy, pretty. mounding weeping dissectum.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
This is a really nice must have JM but it tends to need a bit of attention . Although hardy protection will help and containerizing is probably a good thing . This is a much sought after JM but I would put it in the novice on up category not beginner . VERY pretty especially in spring and early summer with great possibilities for those who want a special tree that needs a bit of nudging along.
This name has been used for many green dissections found outstanding to growers. I have held back carrying this one for that reason but have such trust in a particular grower that i am getting it from i decided to offer it . If he thinks it is "great enough" to have this name... then it is truly a special tree.
This is a very old cultivar dating back to the early 1700's. This unusual tree had odd leaves many with just three lobes some serrated some smooth, some flat some twisted... Wabito forms a small tree that is very attractive and great for smaller setting. This tree is for those that dare to be different and are not anal in their landscaping. It's name means lonely person .
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Medium up to 12' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Upright and Open
Leaf Size: Small
Leaf Type: Odd or Different Types on Each Branch
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
From England, broad upright tree, pinkish variegation. Very hardy and STUNNING! Leafs out later in the spring so it won't be as susceptible to later frosts.
Also known as Palmatifidum, I prefer the much cooler Japanese name. You can’t go wrong with this one . Again one that I highly recommend . Not frail or helpless this dissectum seems to thrive in many diverse conditions. But at the same time be strikingly pretty in all seasons. This is also known by the name Palmatifidum which I find rather uninspiring for such a cool Dissectum!!
This is a good hardy traditional green dissectum that is vigorous and get fairly large. This one is cascading and it's form is copied by many other cultivars . I did not carry this cultivar in the past as I thought it was too ordinary like a Bloodgood. But have since decided it is a worthy tree and one folks should own ...basically different enough that it should be showcased on this web site
A newer Dissectum .that is my absolute fav of this type. Somewhat upright VERY finely dissected with nice color outstanding form . In my opinion this is simply the best of the new dissectums . If you buy any finely dissected JM this is one you should get first. I really love this JM!!! Rated as high as the sky in my book!!
I really like this one . It is a new cultivar that has a nice smaller look about it. It has very nice color and more squat horizontal form. I think this one is going places.
This has been one of my favorite all time trees .. but until now impossible to get, FINALLY I can offer it .. it has that really cool outward branching structure where from it begets it's name .. layer and layer of leafed branches it forms a rounded upright compact tree.It grows slowly sop no worries on it overgrowing just about any siting..this is just a really cool hardy tree
A smaller hardy red upright that is just what a lot of folks want for those non - Ponderosa yards . It is stunning in both color and shape and forms just one beautiful smaller tree. I have been watching this one and it is a special red .. fast grower and very cool.. not your fathers Red Japanese Maple
Another upright red cultivar that is very hardy . All of these usually do well here and this one holds color especially well throughout the heat of the season . It is a reliable and very sun and cold hardy tree... a keeper
This is a very cool new cultivar. It is reticulated but not heavily. It has a subtle color suitable for just that special place . It is an upright tree with very graceful branching. I really like this one it is super cool . seems to be similar in some ways to the Ghost series .
Some may not consider this a dwarf because it can get a tad bigger but it is of dwarf form and still stays pretty small. An outstanding pink color in spring sets this one apart along with many very small/tiny leaves. It grows fast and is very very pretty. Zone 6.
This is a dwarf Sango Kaku which is much smaller and bushier and with red fall color. It doesn't seem to have the problems the Sango has for northern areas and seems like a perfect tree for year round color for that smaller nook you have just a waiting for something special. Zone 6.
This tree is a great upright yellow-leafed form of the lovely dwarf Shidava Gold. It will bring a sunny color to your garden. Pink highlights in spring.
Very Rare!Orange colored bark on new growth. Seven lobed, deeply dissected leaves. Starts out a wonderful orange going to green and eventually a menagerie of red, orange, and green.
A very hardy JM with nice color throughout the season making this a perfect JM for this area and has an additional plus .that it can take some sun. I have become fixated on this tree. Yes the name is cool, but the tree is unusually perfect for these parts and seems to thrive here. That being said it is really, really pretty in both color and form. A must have for this area, or just about any place else within JM growing zones.. But does NOT like wet areas plant high and dry
This is an outstanding dwarf cultivar with great character, form, and substance. All leaves are small shiny and crinkled. It is fairly open for a dwarf and more tree like/ upright than most others
New and improved Higasayama. Lobes with wide white band turn rich pink in the fall. New entry for us. More details to determine.
Translates to Snow Peak.
Deeply incised leaves in masses make this a truly neat plant I guess branches with leaves are kind of bird wing like . The yellow part of the “bird” name is subtle though so don’t expect something like Ueno homare. But this one is special in it’s own right
Surprising great red color through the season. This JM has an especially nice leaf shape with stunning shiny red color . This one is an older variety the out performs most newer ones .It is an all around terrific tree that really stands out in every season.
A very hardy red JM that keeps it's color well throughout the summer This JM is a fairly fast grower and very sturdy . A real winner for this part of the country . It has become a favorite of mine for both it’s distinctive form and color that it holds especially well even into hot weather. Although Vertrees saw variegation in it, no one else has …So if ya do see variegation in the Yubae let me know and what you were “on “ at the time . But it really doesn’t need it, it is simply a truly beautiful JM in it’s own right. One of the best upright reds I have found .
This is an unusually hardy red upright that has been a pleasant surprise . It can takes sun well but would prefer a bit of afternoon shade of course. It seems to hold it's color as well as any red and is nice from spring til fall. Although at first glance it seems like a typical red Palmatum , it is really nicer than most and I highly recommend it . It will REALLY grow on you and become one of your favs too.
A very very pretty dwarf that has slender longer leaves than most and cool /different colorations throughout the summer . It is VERY rare and fairly hardy and makes a great container tree .... It must be kept in part shade and watered carefully
Some have stated this has smaller leaves than Yuri hime but it is really nothing like it in fact larger , but still small like most dwarfs.. It is just one very pretty dwarf that is not as touchy as the Yuri .it is very easy to grow and grows on you. it is also much faster growing and bigger and not quite as clustered . A good collectors tree I personally like it better than Yuri but it is not similar so that is personal taste not a comparison...
This one is a winner. Very compact with shiny green wavy edged leaves. Leaves are close together on a single trunk. You've never seen anything like it ... it is super cool, hard to graft therefore not readily available and not inexpensive but a must for any collection. It is a lot hardier than it looks. Buy this one for style not color you will be happy you did.
A rare cool Maple with a leaves in the shape of a cross VERY VERY COOL Seems to be a vigorous grower,,, The leaves are stunning.. Not super colorful but it is one of my faves for it's leaf shape ...Rare.Can actually survive in Zone 3.
A new introduction from poland .. a purple leafed Norway med size tree n.. I am excited about this one. It is purple not red but in search may come up red
A very cool variegated maple with cream speckles over light green ... this one is a slow grower so no need to worry for many years that it will get too big .. a good medium size yard tree.
This is a gorgeous variegated super hardy JM. It needs a bit of shade but not too much. Perfect for the northern grower, it can withstand pretty cold temps. It is a must have for those up north wanting a variegated tree but also very cool in south with more shade. This is a must have tree .. very popular but seldom seen because it is very hard to get!!
This is it... finally some specimens of super hardy Pseudosieboldianum. I have been very impressed by the ssp Takesimenses but have not known of it's hardiness which I am now testing .. That tree is just phenomenal nuf said . This cultivar in this species is hardy to zone 4 at least so anyone in northern area can feel comfortable growing it .. The trees i am getting both single and multi- stemmed so check it out northerners .. You have waited to plant out a Japanese maple and now you can. .

This pseudosieboldianum x palmatum hybrid is the brightest orange-red in the spring. Small star-shaped leaves turn green with red in the summer. Super hardy.
Super hardy, short garden tree with dissected leaves. Leaf color is paler green with pink to red blush on new growth. Yellow, orange and red in fall. Branches are undulating to give winter interest too.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 4 - Down to -30°
Summer Hardiness: Full Sun
Tree Size: Short up to 6' in ten years or more
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
North Wind's palmate leaves emerge red in spring changing to green by midsummer. Showy pink samaras standout against the green summer foliage. When other fall color has faded in northern landscapes, North Wind continues the show with a dramatic orange scarlet.Very hardy sieboldianum hybrid, dramatic orange-scarlet in the fall
acer x pseudosieboldianum hardy acer to -40 degrees FBeautiful hardy tree which can reach 10 to 20 feet high and 10 to 20 feet wide, possibly more. The original seedling was discovered in 1991. Is possible to survive Zone 3, but still a young tree overall so at your own risk.
This is a super cool hardy Korean maple that looks like a traditional Japanese maple. It has fabulous Fall color. Highly recommended for northern growers who want a taste of far east. This has big leaves leaves and a nice, graceful form. Mine has taken -17 without any die-back and it is VERY VERY pretty .
This is a very cool acer rubrum with large leaves and looks somewhat similar to esk sunset .. A new introduction very cool and must have.. needs afternoon shade it will burn in full sun like all other variegated cultivars
This tree is a winner ... very cool yellow spring and summer bright re/yellow in fall . this tree gets big 20 ft or more over time a truly different shade tree
A very cool white dusted red maple .. a little shade could be helpful but full sun is ok .. this one is very rare but well worth getting the white dusted leaves are phenominal
This is very unusual silver maple. Usually I am not a fan of silver maples but this is a cut-leaf variety which is very cool, but must be planted in the right location. Fast growing and super cool. It looks like a Japanese maple upright dissectum.
A columnar sugar maple very tight and upright even more so than Newtons Sentry .. perfect for a place needing a non spreading skinny upright tree. Is actually a Zone 3
Super columnar sugar maple with great fall color .This one is a winner for those that want towering columnar maple hedge New England style.. A GREAT choice
A slow growing columnar sugar maple that is beefier and denser than Newton Sentry .. It is a must have along with all the columnar sugar maples.. very colorful in Fall
A rare variety from Vern Jean Nursery in Oregon, this large-leafed sugar maple is columnar. Make that extremely columnar! Mazimum of 3 feet wide and mine now is over 15ft tall. See the photo? It grew two feet over the summer.(There's a joke in there somewhere) Hardy to 30 below zero F.
This is one of my new favorite shirasawanum . It is dissected like some other true dissectum but has the hardiness of a shirasawanum . It is simply gorgeous . unlike many newer introductions are the same old same old .. BUT this one is strikingly different in color leaf shape and very small size This is a must have for the collector and novice alike ..it seems easy to grow and can be kept in a container or planted out if you protect it from critters and too much sun,, Even in mostly shade this one colors well.
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°

Tree Size: Dwarf 1'-3'

information to the Contact Form. This a a superior hardy JM with outstanding color and form .. I would put it with the best of the Shirasawanum, although some think this may be a cross between a Shirasawanum and a Palmatum ?? .. I have been trying to get it for years and have finally found a pipeline . If you're looking for a super hardy gorgeous tree for zone 5, look no further.. highly recommended. It is similar to Mr. Sun but with a broader leaf, a bit bigger, AND MORE UPRIGHT .. and more of a small tree than shrub. As I have grown this tree for a bit I think it is a very good one.

information to the Contact Form. This tree is not for beginners UNLESS YOU BUY A LARGER ONE !!. It is a truly unique tree that is exceptionally touchy when small 90% of those who go cheap on this one will not have it live I guarantee it .. when larger they seem to do fine. But even small ones for an experienced grower will do ok with the proper care and ideal conditions it will reward it’s grower with astounding beauty throughout the season but it's slow growth will make that penny wise pound foolish person wait 15 years in most non perfect Jm growing areas to enjoy it . For those who want to see it grow you wont see much from year to year . . Best keep smaller ones in a container in mostly shade (dappled shade best) with a good drainage medium and watch the watering and the sun. Delicate, finicky, touchy, a tree with an attitude ( my way or the highway) are just some terms and expressions that fit it well. But for those with experience with JM’s or that like a challenge …go for it cause if you are successful it is well worth it.. Or just buy a larger one.

information to the Contact Form. This is a great improvement on the above “Aureum” (Golden Full Moon) JM but don't be confused it is not a bright green like the Aureum . It takes sun and adverse conditions better . It is a truly beautiful tree . I still would not recommend it for beginners but ok for a novice . It is a slow grower and will not get too big . The colors are really nice throughout the growing season .This is a hardy cultivar for colder areas. Makes a real beautiful Jm that will always beg another look.can take some sun too which sets it apart from Aureum which will fry in almost any sun
A dwarf Shirasawanum NO.... really YES.. Here is a first . Discovered by one of the worlds foremost eye for new and unique cultivars this one is sure to be a winner I am putting it under the dwarf column even though it also should be with the other Shira's. .. This one is just to cool to pass up.. a must have. Fall color is similar to the spectacular Acer circinatum Sun Glow.
This is a newer A.s. super hardy variety that has just fabulous form and stature and very pretty leaves .. it color throughout the season is simply phenomenal .. the more I watch this one the more I love it .. a good choice for those northern Jmstrs and southern ones too ..
As it name implies this is a smaller more compact hardy cultivar that has smaller leaves unlike many Shirasawanum that have larger ones. It can fit just about anywhere...but assumes the hardiness of it's brother and sister Shira's. Likes well drained soil and a bit of shade.
A very pretty and different leaf that kind of folds inward on the outsides and very pointed ( see photo) and needs a bit of shade .. This forms a beautiful small tree with smaller leaves than many other of it's species. Great for that spot that needs a bit of spicing up. Is possibly a hybrid between a hardy shirasawanum and a palmatum .. It is super nice and beautiful
This is a highly dissected weeping Shirasawanum ...very unusual .. It's leaves are lacy and form tiny snowflakes. It may be a hybrid of both a Shira and a Palmatum. If you are looking for a very hardy unusual small tree this IS a must have. The leaves do look just like snowflakes finally a cultivar that actually lives up to it's name. this is a very small tree but gets somewhat wide .. great for under windows as an accent or in small garden settings.
A very nice tree that is a cross between a Palmatum and a Shirasawasum. Has very subtle colors of green and red mixed . Leaves are a bit thicker than most …likes a bit of shade. It should be a very hardy cultivar since all shirasawasum's ( it's 1/2) are extremely hardy.
This is a newer Shirasawanum with super pretty yellow gold green leaves that can take much more sun and heat than many of it's brethren .. It also being an A.s. is super hardy. It is also a smaller tree that can fit anywhere but upright , not a bush . It shines in fall with golden hues. If you put this in too much shade it will be green but a very pretty green but partial shade to sun will keep it's color glowing. this is one of the best new A.s hardy JM's. It also has cool vertical striped bark on branches and trunk that is subtle but cool
A newer selection with a very upright shape but horizontal leaf branch structure . Looks to be a real keeper . This is a short tree that can fit anywhere and hardy and colorful as all Japonicum are. It also seems to seed well and are orange /red samaras .. clusters of seeds in late summer making that a extra plus. Translated to "A kind of Kimono"
Winter Hardiness: Zone 5 - Down to -20°
Summer Hardiness: Partial Shade
Tree Size: Dwarf 1'-3'
Tree Form: Weeping
Leaf Size: Medium
Leaf Type: Dissected / Lace Leaf
Spring Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
Summer Color: Green with Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow or Gold Blush
Another smaller really cool Japonicum with smaller leaves and great Stout form. Seems to be a slow grower but very very pretty and extremely hardy.. A good dependable not to picky tree for a smaller spot. I have had one in my front yard for years and is a slow grower in mostly shade should be faster with more sun . This one is put forth as both a Shirasawanum and Japonicum over the years. It has gone back and forth for years .. when I first wrote this it had changed to Shirasawanum .. but now considered a Japonicum .. but whatever it is a great tree everyone likes it and it is easy to grow and hardy and of great form.
This is a smaller interesting A.s. with very cool leaves and unusual branching structure ... There is some disagreement on size but that may be from it's slow growing nature . I have gone with the most current info that it is a smaller tree and mine seem to be slow growers and be small so that seems to be born out. The leaves are darker green on top and lighter on bottom and very differently shaped than other A.s. cultivars. This one puts on a spectacular fall display and holds it's leaves and color late into the fall... This is a good smaller super hardy tree to own and love
I have this tree planted out and it is truly hardy . It isn't moisture sensitive (BUT always best planted in well drained areas). It is also very very pretty and a fav of mine . It seems to take sun well for it's species. The colors are VERY nice all season and it is a very fast grower.. This is a good substitute for the A.s Aureum or easier to grow A.s. Autumn Moon . It is a very "I can take care of myself" tree that even a brown thumb should be able to easily grow. If you like Aureum but are a novice or don't have time to baby your JMs this is a great substitute .. It is one of my current top ten cultivars although hard to get I have some on hand most times .. as all shirasawanum it grows slowly and is a small tree so buying a larger one is a good idea when larger ones are available
This is very different from most Shirasawanum. it does have
many fingers like others but they are pointed and curved inwards leaf .Not too skinny , not too fat....just right. It was named because it resembled a child's drawing of the sun. It is similar to Holland 6910 but a slimmer leaf that is a bit smaller and pointed ...it is super cool and has become a fav of mine .. very very pretty can take some sun but burns in full sun by mid summer and is super hardy... colors are a season long delight
A very choice medium sized Shira .. with great color All season but outstanding in fall . Some folks say this is a Sieboldianum but I agree with Vertrees it is a Shirasawanum. It is one of the best of the best ...Very hardy as well as gorgeous. A must have!!!
This one is a keeper . A really sturdy hardy tree that can take about any bad situation .and survive …but give it a good situation and it will thrive . It is a relatively fast grower hardy and beautiful in form and color . This one comes Highly recommended by yours truly!!.
A great newer Shirasawanum with large leaves that takes sun and wind and cold just fine. Great fall color …it shines like a red sunset in the late fall evening. It is Considered a “red” Full Moon Maple and seems to be a tree that adapts to conditions in an easy manner. It has a reddish glow all summer but is brilliant in spring and fall, a real winner in my book
This a brand new cultivar patent pending and discovered by one of the most astute JM master's in the world so it is a must have . Getting one of these is getting your hand on something very special with deep blue-green leaves in the summer. This one is cool and colorful in all seasons not just shades green, as with many other Shiras, until the fall.
This tree has great seasonal color and the small pointed fan shaped leaves like none you have seen. It is an outstanding cultivar in every sense. I fell in love with this one within days of getting my first one. It’s a beaut. ( not to be confused by the A.p. Sensu)
Color and form at it's best . A really hardy sturdy colorful tree can take some sun and wind . This one is a winner all around .. it basically has everything in a red hardiness , sun worthiness ... gorgeous color, and the dad-gum prettiest leaf you will ever see..and will do well for you.... it may be a hybrid Palmatum /Shirasawanum .. but it is the only red Shirasawenum that stays red all summer .. it is gorgeous and can get big in maple friendly areas.
This is for the northern collectors of JM's . It is a zone 4 tree. It has interesting leaves with tiny hairs on them .. the stalks also have these hairs. the leaf structure gives it a pleated appearance. the fall color is a dramatic show of spectacular reds yellows and oranges. It forms a medium size tree that grows slowly up north. it is a very study hardy cultivar
A perfect shape, hardy, nicely colored tree with smaller leaves and smaller stature for just about any placement This unusual cultivar takes sun highly recommended. I got this one by mistake and have really taken to it. I just can’t get enough of this tree. It is truly cool.
A medium sized striped bark maple with brilliant green leaves in spring and summer and really bright gold in fall .. winter bark is striped with white and purple .. an all year round winner
An outstanding hardy Maple with three separate leaves on each stem. Green leaves in spring and summer, with excellent orange or yellow fall color even in shade. Leaf shape is unusual, interesting and VERY nice. Winter shows off its exfoliating bark similar to Acer griseum only more textural. This tree can get 20 ft tall. I like this one and have planted some myself. An interesting cultivar in hardy or warmer climate gardens.

Cascading branches lined with purple-red, heart-shaped leaves on purple stems make this weeping Red Bud an exciting new choice for the garden. The weeping branches are lined with bright pink flowers each spring. Leaves emerge, rich, deep, purple red with slowly increasing green undertones in the summer. Autumn foliage is bright yellow followed by a chance to admire the weeping branch structure during the winter months. rare red leafed Eastern Redbud
Japanese clethra tree. The leaves resemble alder leaves. Flowers attract butterflies and bees. Needs winter protection even in its Zone 5 locations. Also known as First Snow.
'Green Spiral' has dark green, glossy needles, on twisting stems that spiral outwards and down. It's deep green, stylish habit and moderate size make this an excellent focal point for your garden.
Lemon yellow needles with glowing, silver white undersides are displayed on the ascending branches of this outstanding specimen in spring. The yellow gradually softens as the season progresses, but complementary purple-blue cones add to the dramatic effect. Full sun produces the best color, but plants benefit from some protection if grown in scorching conditions. Over time, with staking, 'Aurea' becomes a large, pyramidal tree.
Radiating, dark green needles lie flat on the stems and provide a backdrop for attractive, small, brown buds at the branch tips. This flattened, spherical plant has a formal, tidy appearance and glistening foliage that draws attention.
This dwarf cultivar of the Korean Fir starts out with a nest form when young and develops a mounded shape with age. Its wide, blunt-tipped needles, decorated with white undersides, present a striking texture. Protect from hot, direct afternoon sun.
This bright, golden yellow of this low, spreading fir is especially striking in winter when much of the garden's color had faded. During the rest of the year, the versatile, useful plant brightens, areas of partial shade, which it appreciates.
This steely blue culti-varient of the Noble Fir grows slowly and will produce one or more upright leaders with age. These leaders can be removed to maintain a prostrate form. Formerly known as Abies procera Glauca Prostrata
Putty in the hands of a sculptor, the Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar boasts an extremely pendulous habit that can be staked or trained to conform to any shape. From a living waterfall to a grazing, blue, woolly mammoth, plants respond to the whimsy of their designers. Short, irregular, steely blue needles thickly cover the swooping branches and give specimens both color and texture. Trees develop massive trunks with time.
This compact German selection offers the same striking, powder-blue foliage color as the popular Cedrus atlantica Glauca, but the slow-growing, intermediate-size tree maintains a smaller stature. It grows about 6-8" a year and makes an attractive, small tree with considerable presence for the smaller garden. Ascending branches covered with tight clusters of bright needles give the tree an elegant look that is at once full and open. Zone 6 tree.
This upright, relatively narrow form of Atlas Cedar produces creamy white, new growth tips. These stand out against the blue-green, inner needles on older branches that fill in and give tress a stately, mature look. In fall, new growth puts on burnished yellow tones for winter. The unusual, new cultivar makes a superior addition to the cedar lover's landscape.Zone 6 conifer.
Has golden color on the top with green color underneath and within, which gives it a 'Sunny Side Up' presence. When young will spread but as it ages becomes an upright Cedar. With proper pruning it can stay low and spreading.

With age, the fast-growing trees develop fascinating character, almost personalities. Each has an upright, spire-like main trunk and gracefully draping branches that look like arms. The majestic tree produces secondary sub-leaders, forming a grove-like cluster of uprights. This full size Hinoki is the golden version of the species, a distinctive, handsome tree with spreading, graceful branches. The well-cupped outer sprays and new foliage of this naturally irregular conifer are warm, rich yellow, while interior and older foliage sport a medium green. Attractive, reddish brown bark develops striking texture with age. Prefers moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade in the summer.
Neat, feathery fans of foliage display a range of color, from bright lemon yellow on outer foliage to softer shades of yellow, gold, and rich green on interior foliage. This reliable, intermediate-sized selection of golden Hinoki stays smaller than Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurea,' and it contributes a striking, full, upright form to any landscape.
Classy, arching sprays of golden, fern-like foliage decorate this arresting tree. Each unique, flattened branch tapers to a point, just as a fern frond does. Give this intermediate-sized gem plenty of sun and ample moisture to achieve the brightest gold, but use caution in hot climates, where scorching afternoon sun may be too much.
Dwarf conifer who is dense and broad. Has light yellow / chartreuse foliage when young, depending on light exposure. Approximately 2 feet tall at ten years.
Bright golden yellow sprays of foliage cover this sturdy and reliable sport of 'Crippsii'. Branches spread out horizontally in a bird's nest fashion for a ground covering mound. Excellent for use in the foreground of upright garden elements or covering a large bank.
Lacy sprays of attractive lemon yellow foliage let this plant stand out in the garden. Found as a sport on 'Graciosa', it is slower growing than its parent. Narrow when young, it broadens with age. Winter brings a bit of bronze to the tips of the yellow foliage for a nice seasonal change. Tolerates full sun but flourishes in partial shade as well. Well-drained soil is a must.
Few trees can claim the dramatic architectural quality of this incredible upright Hinoki. A striking narrow habit and attractive bark contribute to the beauty of each specimen. But it is the very dense, finely textured foliage naturally sculpted on spiraling branches that account for the awe factor. Slow growing and ideal for large courtyard containers, this choice selection has a delicate constitution that requires perfect conditions. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade.
This irregular, pyramidal Hinoki cypress has bright yellow dense fans. Very dramatic! Tolerates full sun, but does better with some afternoon shade. Zone 5, 8ft tall x 6ft wide. grown 3"-6" per year.
The distinctive curly tips and silvery blue foliage of this selection add both texture and color to the landscape. The uniquely twisted needles show off a gleaming silver side, and the dense, compact form works well wherever a more rounded version of 'Boulevard' is needed. Use it to line the drive or define a garden wall in a moist, well-drained site. Partial shade produces a richer blue.
The finely textured, sunny foliage of this winning "threadbranch" cypress develops vibrant new spring growth that retains its brilliance and shines in the garden all year. Well-behaved, compact and hardy, the low, mounding conifer makes a versatile addition to border, bank, or foundation. It produces best color in full sun and performs even in areas challenged by heat and humidity.
For a handsome bit of color in the rock garden or other small space, this dense, golden cypress delivers. Prized as a close-up accent, especially to add an Asian aesthetic, each plant will spread slowly into a low, irregular mound that suggests moss. Where exposed to more sun, the foliage turns brighter yellow. Easy, resilient and hardy.
'True Blue' is a tighter, more compact form of the popular 'Boulevard.' Its shimmering, powder blue needles, longer than those of 'Boulevard' and without the twist of 'Curly Tops,' grow at a narrow angle to the stems. This unique feature gives the upright, mounding plant a denser, more lush appearance.
This exceptional plant has tiny strands of feathery, white-tipped foliage that produce a fine, velvety texture. Visitors, drawn to the soft, rounded mound by its unique white color, can't resist reaching out and stroking it. It provides year-round color in the rock garden or trough and maintains its size without pruning. Growth tends to be more open in shadier sites, but plants prefer protection from scorching sun.
Like a basketball speckled with tiny nuggets of gold, 'Golden Promise' will make an exciting statement in the garden. Growing 3-5" per year, this dwarf Japanese Cedar has a coarse texture with its small awl-like foliage covering its small globe shape. An excellent choice for the rock garden or in a container on the patio, 'Golden Promise' will provide a colorful accent throughout the seasons. Place in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil for a promise of gold for many years to come. A Zone 6 conifer. One to three feet at ten years.
Pale yellow with white specks in full sun, blueish green color in the shade. Drought and heat tolerant. Dense, short branches slant upward, tree forms a tall, narrow pyramid. 12 ft tall x 8 ft wide grows 6"-8" per year.
Not your typical juniper! This amazing selection boasts feathery foliage in electric chartreuse, a color that makes a striking contrast to other greens in the garden. Cool winter temperature bring a mahogany color to the foliage, but the bright tips remain. Its spreading, vase form and juvenile foliage lend a cheery presence in almost any garden, including one with hot, dry conditions. The yellow sport from ' Youngstown' is reported to hold its bright color and to resist sunburn.
Snake shaped skirt adorns the ground around this Spruce. The staked tops weep in a mesmerizing fashion. Height is dependent on staking. Survives in zone 3.
